A teenage girl has been treated in hospital and a 12-year-old boy was reported ill after consuming “legal high” drugs. The latest scares on Orkney and in the Highland town of Nairn sparked fresh warnings from the police and health officials. They also come just six months after 19-year-old Alex Herriot, from Edinburgh, died at the RockNess Festival near Inverness after taking a substance known as Benzo Fury, which causes effect similar to ecstasy.

Northern Constabulary are currently investigating the theft of legal highs from a shop in Nairn last week.

Conor Sutherland, who owns the Partay Patrol fancy dress and novelty shop in Nairn and sells legal hights, said he was shocked a 12-year-old had managed to obtain the substance. But he insisted he sells the £25-a-packet products as incense and that they were clearly marked “not for consumption”, adding that he would continue selling them.

Sergeant Ruth Ross, community safety officer for Northern Constabulary, said: “Taking “legal highs” carries enormous risks, whether taken on their own or combined with alcohol. “We would urge people not to take any unknown substance, whether described as “legal” or not, as their contents cannot be verified and will often contain dangerous chemicals.

"Just" 6 months, huh?
Who decided that it was "just"?
How many alcohol-related fatalities were there during that time in Scotland?
According to this document, there are 3492 alcohol-related deaths a year, so the number should be around 1700.

1700 deaths from alcohol in 6 months mostly don't make the news.
But one hospitalization due to a legal high makes the news, and it comes "just" six months after a single death from another legal high, which might be an entirely different substance.

Could it be, perchance, that someone is trying to incite fear and panic?8o

exactly

If only MXE were commercially available, these children would not have likely ended up in the hospital. It is the safest known RC on the market and doctors will surely be looking into its medical potential in the coming years. Sad we live in such a D.A.R.E. obsessed, just-say-no culture :(

its hardly the safest, could cause bladder issues like ketamine. LSD, mushrooms, 2c-i are probably the most benign RC/psychs around.

Id be more worried about the alcohol consumption in general.

According to the media, a death from drugs every couple of years is worse than death from alcohol everyday.

If this shit were legal, would never happen. Dosing would be better understood, purities regulated, and just an overall better understand and respect for these types of drugs.

Also yea.... You never see a news article "alcohol related death comes just 2 seconds after the death of the last alcoholic", shit would overflow every paper in the world

^ It would get pretty boring. "Alcohol claims one millionth victim," "Alcohol blamed for modern day holocaust."
