A mother of a psychiatric patient in Devon fears her son's mental illness is being made worse because he takes legal-high drugs. Legal highs are sold openly and legally, but can have the same effect as many illegal drugs. One expert has urged those with mental health issues to avoid the drugs "like the plague".

A number of them have been outlawed by the government, but it is fighting an "ever increasing number", say advisors. The mother of a 40-year-old man who is undergoing treatment in a Devon psychiatric hospital, said that when her son was allowed to go out, he went to a local shop and bought legal highs.

How is this even news? Somebody with no knowlege of the subject saying shes scared of a possible outcome? Its like me saying kill all birds, they could carry smallpox...
 
with drug laws becoming harsher, and the old school substances like cocaine, heroine, marijuana, lsd, mushrooms, mescaline and what not, have become illegal - we keep getting more and more of these "legal", or, 'research chems' that do far more damage then the former if used properly/responsibly or not. alcohol becomes abused more often too ill suppose.
 
It is definitely not unheard of for drugs to exacerbate existing mental issues, as a general rule drugs should be avoided if you have a mental illness. This seems more like common sense than something that should be on the news though.
 
someone with a mental illness might not consider that, or feel so disturbed that they seek relief by abusing substances. the knowledge of a substance being legal and more easily accessible is probably more enticing too for such individuals.
 
Maybe instead of complaining publicly you could get your son some professional help for his mental health problems?

Since when did the mentally ill become public spectacles because of their drug use? Does society really think this is acceptable? :\
 
As can good old fashioned time. We should ban time! Not only can it cause mental illness but it kills 100% of people.
 
Dont drink alcohol either. For some reason the media shove down our throats not to do drugs, but when it comes to alcohol all they say is "drink responsibly".

You can't lump all "legal highs" into one group and decide they are worse than their illegal cousins.. we don't know that..

Cocaine use fell massively while Mephedrone was doing the rounds.. Cocaine deaths fell sharply while mephedrone killed 2.
