THREE in five people back a major review of drugs law and even want legalisation considered. The verdict in a You-Gov poll for The Sun came as Deputy PM Nick Clegg called for the possible legalisation of drugs in an exclusive interview with The Sun. He declared the war on drugs a disastrous failure last night — and demanded that David Cameron plucks up the “courage” to order a major review of Britain’s ageing narcotics laws.
In an explosive intervention that will rock the Coalition, Mr Clegg insisted: “It’s time we told the truth.” And he threw his weight behind a controversial report by MPs this week that called on ministers to consider legalising cannabis and stop prosecuting even cocaine and heroin users.
The Lib Dem leader said: “We are losing the war on drugs on an industrial scale. “In politics, as in life, you can’t keep on doing something that doesn’t work. You can’t keep repeating the same mistakes.”

A couple of years ago the comments would have been filled with dumbass bullshit like that ^

Glad to see things have changed / are changing.

If Cleggy is going to be open for a review on the drugs policy and Cameron isn't then I reckon people might end up voting for Clegg over Cameron next election.

I hope so. Although I'm sure he said before the election that he supported legalization? No doubt that Cameron doesn't listen to a word he says though!

High time for drug reform
Tory backs Clegg's call for rethink

With reader comments

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg branded the war on drugs a failure and demanded reform in an interview with The Sun yesterday.

But PM David Cameron rejected his plea, saying he does not support the decriminalisation of any drugs that are illegal. Mr Clegg’s call for a fresh approach has gained support from some unexpected quarters, however.

Here, senior Tory MP Nick de Bois, who helps lead the party’s influential 1922 Committee, argues that drug addicts should receive treatment, not prison sentences.

But reformed addict and author Barry Woodward – whose charity Proclaim Trust talks to prisoners – claims that sometimes, jail is the only answer...

Do-gooders who have not thought about drugs since school will nod.

Just because Nick Clegg speaks in clichés does not mean he is an idiot. But when he says, as he did in an interview with The Sun on Friday, "We are losing the war on drugs on an industrial scale," we ought to be on our guard. "Industrial scale" is one of his favourite phrases. The Liberal Democrats have betrayed their promises on an industrial scale, and they are going to lose votes at the next election on an industrial scale. But Clegg has a plan for the next election that might just work.

On drugs, his plan is to talk liberal garbage. Cliché after cliché. "Losing the war on drugs." "A conspiracy of silence." "It's time we told the truth." Lots of right-on do-gooders who have not thought seriously about drugs since school will nod and think that liberalisation, decriminalisation or legalisation – whatever – is a good idea. Yet the truth is that no one has a better idea, except in minor details, than the present policy, which has been remarkably successful.

From 1998 to 2011, the proportion of young people aged 16 to 24 who had taken illegal drugs in the past month has halved from 20 per cent to 10 per cent, according to the Crime Survey for England and Wales. This Labour achievement, at a time when the consumption of legal drugs, alcohol and tobacco, has also fallen, is ignored by people who are under the influence of that ancient piece of rhetoric, "the war on drugs is not working".
