OK, so marijuana is now legal in Washington state. But does that mean it's good for you?

"Daily use increases the risk of becoming dependent," says Roger Roffman, a professor emeritus at the University of Washington's School of Social Work. He supported Initiative 502, which called for the legalization of a small amount of marijuana for adults 21 and older in Washington.

Roffman says there are positive effects of marijuana use: It can help people relax and interact with others. It also can enhance some sensory experiences, like listening to music. And consumption for medical purposes can reduce symptoms of disease and treatments of disease, he says.

But dependence can cause impairment or distress, and effects that interfere with other areas of life, he says. "It's fairly common for people who are using marijuana regularly to complain that their ability to think clearly is impaired -- to remember, to organize their thoughts, to follow through with multitasking."

TLC, the active ingredient in marijuana "hijacks and corrupts" the natural process of endocannabinoids, a key family of chemicals that help guide the brain in proper maturation, says Ruben Baler, a neuroscientist with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). These chemicals "play key roles in memory formation, learning, decision-making," says Baler.

Not everyone who uses marijuana regularly experiences problems with thinking and memory, says Roffman. But researchers have not been able to predict which users will which won't.

"One of the main contributors to worse outcomes (of marijuana use) is the age at which you start," says Baler. "So we are particularly worried about young people who are using the drug."

The concern, especially for young people, "is that you're performing sub-optimally during those years when you should be working at peak levels of performance," he says. And with day-after-day use, the drug has a cumulative effect on achievement. Studies show that when marijuana is used chronically, "people achieve lower in academics, job performance and life satisfaction," says Baler. "It's difficult to understand why kids working so hard on their education, would engage in an act that would lower their chance of success."

And yes, marijuana is addictive, adds Baler. Approximately 1 in 5 people will become addicted. They can become quite ill if they try to quit. "There are many people who go into treatment to get over an addiction to marijuana."

^ exactly. It's all the kids' fault!

Yeah, I should start writing an apology letter to the American people: I am sorry I have caused your economy such great disaster, if only I could have never smoked marijuana. :(

LOL!

I love when people totally miss the point and blame a drug for a select group of people's crimes against humanity.

I am sorry that 9/11 happened, if only I didn't start smoking marijuana, it would have never happened.

I am sorry that my marijuana smoking led to the Oklahoma City Bombing... Timothy McVeigh said himself "Captain, if you don't stop smoking cannabis RIGHT NOW, I'mma blow up that building, with all those kids inside of it." I truly wanted to quit, but something inside of me, the rebellious side, took one more puff of cannabis smoke and blew it right in Timmy's face...and he kept to his word. I knew there was something ironic about Timmy's last meal before his execution for the Oklahoma City Bombing... it was two pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream. GREEN ICE CREAM. Even in death he is telling me to stop smoking cannabis in a symbolic fashion...and... I still can't stop.

I received a phone call from Saddam Hussein...he told me that he was going to gas the Kurds if I didn't stop smoking cannabis. I thought he was talking about spraying food with some pesticides... little did I know Kurds was a race of people. If only I had stopped smoking cannabis.

To top it all off, I was told that the reason that the United States doesn't have nationalized health care... is because Hillary Clinton was so upset with my marijuana habit that she gave up her quest to achieve nationalized health care in America. She even told me "Captain, the day you stop smoking cannabis, I'll start my search for nationalized health care again." but I can't stop!!!

Oh, why did I start smoking marijuana?!?!?!

Yeah, because when you smoke pot, you and you alone, are making the economy worse. And that's why smoking pot lowers your chance of success. 8(

I think you missed the point vastly. It's not about that marihuana directly hits the economy somehow (even IDK why you bring that up). Nevertheless, i think the point out of this it's that when kids start smoking pot instead of studying for their final exams and doing it instead of doing their homework, it's not right for them to mess their cognitive development because of drugs. That's what i think, even if i love marihuana, it is not something for kids.

Well then, shouldn't we do something to motivate those kids who don't want to study, instead of demonizing a plant.

If you're lazy and you smoke weed, you're going to be lazy.
If you're motivated and you smoke weed, you're going to be motivated.

Fuck teaching how to study the right way. Memorize, memorize, memorize.
