The controversy over kratom is poised to break into the mainstream, as distributors have begun packaging it in shiny aluminum cases with names like "Pissed-Off Elephant" and "Slothapuss." With bong shops suddenly pitching the plant as the next great legal high and news stories sparking blowback, advocates worry legal action might be inevitable.

The busty clerk at Grateful J's head shop in Boca Raton holds out a small brown vial. The label reads "Lucky," and she promises the stuff packs a punch.

"You'll want to throw it to the back of your throat," she suggests. "I'd say drink the whole thing. Maybe drink half, wait a little bit, and see how you feel."

The potion is kratom, and it's taking center stage in America's next big drug scare. In recent months, MSNBC reported that kratom has sent users to the ER, the Daily called it a "hallucinogenic drug" with "potentially fatal side effects," Forbes asked if it was the next bath salts, and ABC Action News in Tampa claimed that "it can be more difficult to get off than heroin." Kratom is legal and supported by a vocal community touting its health benefits, but in the wake of bath salts and synthetic pot — drugs tied to scores of gruesome crimes this year, including (probably erroneously) the "Miami Zombie" attack — lawmakers are eager to ban the next big thing.

"It's not a safe high by any means," Frank LoVecchio, director of Phoenix's Banner Good Samaritan Poison and Drug Information Center, says. "If you take enough of it, it has opiate-like activities. It makes people high kind of the same way morphine or heroin would make them high."

But is kratom actually a youth-menacing brain-destroyer or merely another victim of Reefer Madness-like hysteria? That question has become important as the drug finds its way to South Florida and lawmakers debate whether to prohibit it. New bans, after all, cost taxpayers, prosecutors, and cops thousands of dollars and countless hours.

fuck come on, not kratom. seriously. It's been around FOREVER. it's nothing new. I hate the media, they just have it out for kratom but even so nothing has been done but more articles aren't going to help.

This is typical of Florida, the media, and our ever so proactive government. They have managed to demonize one of the most beneficial plants of all time. Of course no mention in their stories of all the people who have been freed from opiate addictions because of kratom. Also nothing said about the folks who use kratom instead of narcotics to control their pain so they can have a life. I guess the truth isn't sensational enough for TV cameras and newspapers. And now we're on the verge of losing one of the greatest tools in our arsenal. This is unbelievable! Thanks, Florida :X!

Oh fuck me. I'm rather partial to kratom. As are tens of thousands of others who have gotten off suboxone, heroin, methadone, etc and can live productive lives without the soul sucking effects of the usual maintenance opioids. Minimal respiratory depression, not a single documented fatality, and a true ceiling effect, meaning less really is more. The best maintenance drug many have ever encountered. Won't work if you are after a high, as there is none in opioid tolerant individuals. Kills cravings like nothing else. The -phylline alkaloids have NMDA antagonistic properties, nice gentle stimulant effect via the AA receptors, and coryantheidine is an antagonist. And it is cheap and LEGAL.

Indiana banned it already. Well, banned 7-OH mitragynine, so may as well have. Kratom will be a one time impulse buy in a headshop, and very disappointing to those looking to get high.

Can we just cut off Florida and push it out towards Cuba ? ( no offense Numbers, if this is still your turf.. . ) I've had just about enough of floridas batshit crazy BS the last few years. What the hell is going on down there?

I doubt they would be selling it at gas stations or convenience stores, since they banned snuff and bath salts in my county anyway. But people shouldn't buy kratom from head shops anyway, unknown quality and way overpriced.

The Miami New Times isn't really a good source of information. This is the same paper that carries pages of adverts for pain doctors. "Bring this ad and pay only $35 for your first visit" lol

This is not a surprise to me. Within the last 2 weeks I have seen several convenience stores (chains also) carrying something called Kratomite. It is a small bottled drink with kratom extract (and it sucks)

It is just so hard for your average person to find the strain of kratom that works for them that a lot of people try it once, it does nothing and they give up on it. The people who use it regularly keep it secret for a number of reasons. I think kratom will be safe... I remember a few years ago all the fuss about salvia, aside from some backwards states, the plant is still 100% legal (in Canada anyhow) Salvia is hands down a more dangerous drug due to the effect alone.

If it turns out there IS a ban on the horizon, I will finally be stocking up on something before the ban goes through. Most of the legal highs are just useless, but kratom is great and very useful

Do you remember when those adds would have long lists of the drugs they sold, including not only opioids but also steroids and Adderall?

^that would have been nice

i'm partial to kratom now as well, mixes so nice with etizolam, no respiratory issues, no constipation, gives me tons of energy to clean, work on electronics, guitars and make music. It won't get banned in Canada either way so i'm good but i feel for you Americans.

i'm glad that here in Austria no one gives shit about legal highs right now. mephedrone got banned some years ago, but that's about it. i'm glad, because kratom is a fucking nice drug, i rate it almost as high as dihydrocodeine...

One stop shopping man. I forgot how easy it used to be to able to purchase your meds at the doctors office.

I have seen kratom in head shops long before any of that bathsalt or spice crap hit the shelves. God some people are idiots; they need to concintrate on the drugs that actually are causing a problem in society.
