Minneapolis/St. Paul teens use steroids and muscle-enhancing substances -- some in 7th and 8th grade -- at higher rates than thought, researchers say.

Lead author Marla Eisenberg of the University of Minnesota said a survey of more than 2,700 adolescents enrolled in middle school and high school in St. Paul and Minneapolis found 5.9 percent of boys reported using steroids and 4.6 percent of girls.

The researchers did not ask students what motivated them to use steroids, but Eisenberg said it's possible children were influenced by the media concerning body size.

The study, published online in the journal Pediatrics, said the study also found 90 percent of boys and 81 percent of girls said they were exercising more to increase their muscle mass.

Not surprised, the highschool I went to had s football coach that encouraged kids to start early with steroids

Our offensive line coach used to sell us the steroids! And he was not just any muscle-head off the street; he was ex-NFL.

If steroids were permitted in pro sports, adolescent steroid use would be much higher.

all these studies shock me alot for one reason, the percentage of girls "exercising to build muscle mass" and the percentage of girls using steroids is always relatively close to the numbers of boys doing it????
it seems very strange

Girls can use lighter anabolics like anavar to cut fat and build muscle.

I think it's disgusting that teens are pressured into this. Adolescent sports should be a no-strings attatched test of skill. The chemical warfare shouldn't be involved until they're in college or professional. Teens are not yet old enough to deal with exogenous hormones both physically and mentally.

Steroids can be simple or very complex. In a way physical enhancement doping is mind over matter.

it seems very strange
If that seems strange, then this might seem strange to you too.

The way I see it, steroids is a form of cosmetic surgery. So its no surprise that so many people are trying to improve their self-image. Nevertheless steroids are alot less dangerous than many other drugs.

^good post. By and large, they are NOT the boogeymen they're made out to be.
/although I wouldn't say "cosmetic drugs" so much as I'd say "lifestyle drugs" ;]

They shouldn't be involved at all bro :/

i suppose i am biased but i disagree.... from what i understand steroids are very damging esp long term
also i think it can lead to a form of body dysmorphic disorder similar to anorexia except with the person seeing themselves as "too small" instead of "too big"

i think those ppl had dysmorphic disorder completely independently of steroids. And no, steroids are incredibly safe long term if done properly (testosterone has been used pharmaceutically in the US for about a century with a fantastic safety profile)

i don't doubt the safety profile, but what indications has it been used for in medicine? the only one i can think is testosterone deficiency.

HRT(hormone replacement therapy), the "lifestyle" usage I frequently endorse (whether RX'd or not), isn't even the main usage in the medical field. IIRC, muscular wasting (AIDS, etc) and burn victims are the two biggest demographics.

I think test is also used for men with low sex drive, weak bones and muscles, and other problems associated with ageing.

It's my understanding that unless they are bio-identical, they do damage to your endocrine system and increase the risk of various cancers. Women doing artificial hormone therapy during menopause are more likely to have metastases in the breast tissue, for example.

As for adolescents taking hormones it seems very unwise unless there is a true deficiency.

until puberty/growth is 100.0% done, it is foolish (it'll fuse growth plates and probably a ton of other bad shit - shutting down natural test when you're in puberty is just asking for trouble). That said, I'll still say I had plenty of friends who used in highschool, and all through college, and have used 3X myself - and i don't know a single.horror.story. Any problems from gear that i've ever heard are entirely online (not saying people don't get gyno or whatever, i'm sure that happens with some frequency, but out of any drug i've ever seen someone using, steroids are BY FAR the safest/best thing they've used, and i'm including marijuana)

re cancer, i can't say I've ever heard that, though I wouldn't be shocked to find there's some miniscule correlations, in certain circumstances at least. I hope i haven't come across as implying that test is as safe as vitamin C or anything like that, but..i dunno- i guess, within the context of talking on bluelight, i see steroids as having an incredibly favorable safety profile. I definitely view them as far safer than, say, therapeutic benzodiazepine prescriptions, and on par with, or safer than, stuff like alcohol, amphetamine, etc. And keep in mind I'm just speaking about all these things when used in 'therapeutic' levels - and while most other "bad" chemicals lend themselves to heavy abuse, steroids do not even approach "psychoactives" when it comes to abuse potential. (I'm not sure what you would qualify being on-cycle as, given that you're certainly not "high" in any sense whatsoever, but you certainly have a better attitude/outlook/vibe...i guess it's primary physical effects cause secondary effects of "psychoactive" nature, in a way)

C'mon, let's be reasonable here.
I am not against steroid use at all, but to say that steroids are safer than weed is pretty ridiculous.

Anabolic steroids may exert profound adverse effects on the liver, male and female reproductive systems, the cardiovascular system, the immune system, and may lead to hypertension, gynecomastia (males growing boobs), glucose tolerance/ insulin resistance, bad cholesterol levels, acne, hair loss, aggression, pathological anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations. Withdrawal symptoms include aggressive and violent behavior, mental depression with suicidal behavior, mood changes, and in some cases acute psychosis.

They can cause penile and testicular shrinkage, too. :|

It is not even remotely comparable to weed. While weed is also not perfectly "safe" - no drug is perfectly safe - it has far fewer risks typically associated with it.
