A top official at the United Nations has called upon the Obama administration to illegally quash the recent initiatives in Washington State and Colorado where voters approved of legalization of the use of the plant. The vote, in essence, nullified unconstitutional federal statutes and the UN’s on narcotics agreement.

The President of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), Raymond Yans, voiced concerns in a press statement over the non-medical use of cannabis in both Colorado and Washington, as well as, cities such as Michigan and Vermont. Yans stated,

“these developments are in violation of the international drug control treaties, and pose a great threat to public health and the well-being of society far beyond those states”.

Yans also went on to state, “Legalization of cannabis within these states would send wrong and confusing signals to youth and society in general, giving the false impression that drug abuse might be considered normal and even, most disturbingly, safe. Such a development could result in the expansion of drug abuse, especially among young people, and we must remember that all young people have a right to be protected from drug abuse and drug dependency.”

While he stressed the dangers of a plant that grows naturally and was put here on the earth by God in the Creation week (Genesis 1), he must be aware of the poppy fields our soldiers protect in Afghanistan. Yet, he says nothing about that. In fact, it seems he is noticeably quiet about it.

One hundred eight-five states agreed to the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which decided to put cannabis under control and limit its use to medical purposes.

Yans press release claimed that he recognized the commitment of the federal government of the United States to resolve issues between the federal and state levels, but insists that the U.S. must meet its obligations under the drug control convention and he requested that the feds “take necessary measures to ensure full compliance with the international drug control treaties within the entire territory of the United States.” Of course, he said this would be for the “health and well-being of its citizens.”

Okay, a couple of things.

Was the UN against the decriminalization of marijuana in the Netherlands and all drugs in Portugal? Yeah its different than full legalization but those states will easily make millions in taxes and save probably just as much in law enforcement. Seems like more benefits to me and no more negative effects than decriminalization (besides "young people will think its safe" which is wrong IMO because legality doesn't change the inherent safety of anything) So if they didn't have a problem with the Netherlands or Portugal, WA and OR shouldn't be any different.

we must remember that all young people have a right to be protected from drug abuse and drug dependency
Obviously. No one is forcing them to smoke. Just like no one is forcing them to use the drugs that are already legal.

cities such as Michigan and Vermont
Pretty sure those are only states...

Pure drivel.
With tobacco and alcohol legal, are young people "protected" from drug abuse?
Are those drugs "safe"?
Or weed is somehow worse?
Does legalization or permissiveness ever result in an increase in drug addiction/abuse in the long term? I am talking about Portugal, Amsterdam...
Hard to know how to respond to this quote, which is all myths and scare propaganda.

Um, someone ought to tell this guy that the year is 2012, not 1612. One ignorant opinion can not override a democracy as much as it use to.

Who would allow such an ignorant person become the President of the International Narcotic Control Board. This man provides no proof that cannabis isn't safe. I can't take what he has to say serious, he just seems upset that no one's listening to what the president of the INCB is saying; because it's false and the people have spoken.

The man is fighting for his job here. He knows that once the U.S. begins on the path to drug legalization, the whole world will follow, as they will not be extorted into it anymore by ... the U.S.

Guys like this will say or do anything to stay employed, regardless of the horrendous potential and existing consequences.

Running scared! God forbid marijuana is legal and people who smoke it are not thrown in jail.

Ironic because the U.S. basically wrote the book on UN drug policy and then got the endorsement from the other western European nations.

Really, this is just the U.S. talking to the U.S.

Seeing as the UN is HEAVILY influenced by the US federal government this isn't surprising. I doubt its little more than a scare tactic.

Nah, this guy is Belgian and already had a fuckload of experience in various anti-drug agencies, nationally and internationally (and especially within the EU) before he was appointed to his UN position. Just another drug-warrior doing his drug-war thing.

I agree with you 100%, and I hate to hear from people who think the UN isn't heavily US influenced. It is, and people need to wake up and realize when an imperialist nation is attempting global control.

It could be argued that legalization makes any drug become boring to youth. When I was in school everyone was more willing to take an unknown 'ecstasy' pill over a bottle of liquor (not to mention the ecstasy was much easier to find and marketed towards kids)

Kids these days see alcohol as a stupid and useless pass time. Lots don't but many people I know just simply won't drink because of the massive acceptance=regular sightings of disgusting drunk people. If I ever think "maybe I'll drink tomorrow night" I can just go for a walk along the main strip of my town and realize that I will simply smoke some pot and hang out due to all the sightings of pop-collared college boys fist fighting in the street, young bitches falling all over the place covered in vomit, people puking out the windows of taxi's, girls crying and screaming at... whoever... And somehow MDPV got the moniker 'zombie drug' ... The zombie drugs are alcohol and mood stabilizers.

hahahahah but just keep on letting them see funny alcohol commercials during the superbowl, because these children are much worse off weed than alcohol its not like two drunk teenagers in my town plowed a car 100 feet through the air into the back of a round table pizza. fuck you un

Of course young people are protected with liquor stores and discount tobacco stores everywhere. I don't know how it is elsewhere but I sure as fuck get reminders of alcohol and tobacco use everyday, not to mention see it pretty often and HAVE FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE.
