OTTAWA - The same day that voters in two U.S. states approved the legalization of marijuana, the Harper government in Ottawa was bringing into force tough new mandatory penalties for pot.

The states of Washington and Colorado both voted in favour of ballot-box propositions Tuesday removing criminal penalties for the possession and sale of recreational marijuana, while a similar provision in Oregon went down to defeat.

Tuesday was also the day that drug measures in the Conservative government's omnibus Safe Streets and Communities Act, passed last spring, came into full force and effect.

Canada's new law provides a mandatory six-month jail term for growing as few as six marijuana plants, twice the mandatory minimum for luring a child to watch pornography or exposing oneself on a playground.

"Today our message is clear that if you are in the business of producing, importing or exporting of drugs, you'll
now face jail time," Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said in a release Tuesday, well before the American polls closed.

Fuck Harper!

Apparently to conservatives drugs are evil, consensual sex between 2 adults of the same gender is evil but rape or child pornography are apparently okay. I know people who have actually gotten stiffer sentences for drug offenses then some people have gotten for molesting a child. Seriously some child molesters don't even do any fucking jail time! That makes me want to puke up things i forgot i ate! Canada is becoming everything it once hated other countries for. American society is actually evolving while the Canadian public seems happy to sit back and vote in neanderthals intent on dragging us back to the 50's. The 1850's that is :\

Thankfully it's much harder to enforce stupid drug laws where i live then most other places as most of the province is rural and people still my age or older don't like or trust the RCMP. Unfortunately the younger generation does not seem to be developing the same healthy hatred towards the red coats and authorities in general that we had. The city cops generally won't bother you for things like smoking weed in public and such and such as long as you aren't bothering anyone or being a asshole. I have yet to see anyone get bothered downtown for anything other then fighting or acting like a drunken asshole. I swear i hate this fucking country more everyday. Not that i even consider myself Canadian but it's still stamped on my passport. What really pisses me off is that the federal conservatives never even won a seat in my province in the last election (we are the only one they did not win a seat in) so why the hell should we have to live under laws made by conservative tyrants in that frozen shit hole known as Ottawa that's half the country away? Most of them wouldn't even be able to point out this province on a map ffs!

Still i hear the odd cunt face get on about how Canada is so much better then the US! We might as well just have a 1 party state as it would not make abit of difference due to the complete apathy of the average Canadian towards any political matters. Not that i ever had any illusions about this country's style of government or any others being truly democratic but it's just getting pathetic now. Most Canadians can't even be bothered to vote yet if a hockey team looses they go and ran sack half the city of Vancouver :! . It makes me sick literally fucking sick! If the Canadian public put as much energy towards politics as they did towards some shitty sports team with mostly Americans on it anyway we would actually be as good of a country to live in as the smug idiots here think it is.

Get those potheads off the streets! pedophiles... you guys are cool no worries

yeah, going backwards is worse than staying the same. It'd be even more disappointing if the DEA stamped part of our progression out. I'm a bit of a pessimist though when it comes to this.

At least gay marriage is safe from them.

I gotta be honest - out of the three times that I was caught in possession of weed (up to 1/4oz of it), I was never cited/charged with anything. On two occasions, they simply seized my stash and bid me a good night. And on one, they didn't even bother taking it from me; albeit there was only a small amount of a joint left but still... I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up walking a few blocks while slowly puffing away to my mind's content. The pedestrians who walked by me didn't say shit either. It was magical. I don't know why I'm sharing this. I'm guessing I hope I can do it again someday without concern of being served by a conservative leo. I also hope this nutjob Harper and his posse will fade away sooner or later (preferably sooner).

qft!

the cops are pretty lax here in regards to cannabis. I wouldn't mess around with other drugs though. It may as well be legal here, everyone smokes, probably 50% of the population of my city. Harper government has really set us back. Like 8 years ago the liberals were considering decriminalization. Now we are long behind the US, our medical programs suck as well, terrible. I always thought Canada would be the first to legalize and now the states have beat us. Shame on Canada, shame on stephen harper. The canadian dollar is doing really well at least.

A lot of judges are really pissed off about this legislation because it prevents them from handing out sentences on a case-by-case basis. Mandatory minimums are the biggest pile of bullshit. Most of Canada was against the omnibus crime bill but the conservatives all towed the party line instead of listening to their constituents.

I am so sick of social conservatives. Can't wait for their kind to die out within the next 10-15 years. At least the next generation of them won't be as severe.

yeah taking away the judge's discretion is terrible. The harper government basically want to monopolize on the prison industry, and this is one way to do it. They are following the US model (old model perhaps). It's bullshit and needs to change.

Yeah everyone smokes Cannabis here to and even as far outside of the city as i live in the rural ghetto i call home id say about 40% of people smoke it semi regularly. Downtown people walk around smoking Cannabis all the time and the cops simply don't bother you. The red coats are complete fucking arseholes though so i would be super careful in any area where these state lackeys try and enforce upper canada's dictatorship on everyone. The RCMP have developed the habit of busting in like the Gestapo on people for selling abit of weed here ffs! The least that cunt Harper could have done is to improve the medical system but no he went and made it worse! Not to mention the changes he made to EI. Seriously why can't someone shoot that bastard right in his ugly face? :! Though the bullet might curve or just stop once it get's a look at that ugly cunt face though mine you.

Well the thing is in America politicians make their name by going against party lines and stirring the pot. In Canada if you go against your own party you had better hope the new EI changes don't fuck you up too much because that's the pay your going to be getting. Not to mention you won't be privy to any of the nice legal forms of corruption you can get involved in after you step down from politics.

Conservatives will always be just that which is a conservative. They want the great white north to go back to when the north was white, those damn easterners where second class citizens and when women knew their place and didn't act so uppity. I don't make any real distinction between social and economic conservatives because one goes with the other. Economic conservatives are just as bad and we all know the state they left Canada in when the Tories where booted out of power last time. You'd think Canada would have learned it's lesson but nope :|

It's funny you mention that because i remember saying to my friend before the crime bill came in that the only way this makes sense is if they are planning on profiting off the prison industry like they do in many parts of the US. As it turns out i was abit too accurate then id like to be in this case 8(

dammit canadians, your government is making it less appealing to move for when shit gets bad down here (at least theres still australia)

It feels good to live in Washington!

Anyways, I thought Canada was pretty lenient with Marijuana, maybe I'm just thinking of the Vancouver region.

That's a misconception among Americans who think Canada is some liberal paradise. The laws are the same across Canada whether you live in Vancouver BC or in fucking Cape Breton.

Now enforcing those laws are another thing :\

FUCK HARPER
FUCK HARPER

Canada is fast losing the freedom and standard of living for everyone that made this a great country.

Seconded! Harper deserves to be raped to death by 50 rabid dogs who are all Obama supporters.

Canada was never great in my opinion but he's made it far worse.

In the late 90s Canada was one of recognized internationally as one of the best places to live, followed by scandinavian countries and nations like Switzerland and Luxembourg.

Now we are basically America with more hockey.
