Use cocaine a few times a year and it's highly likely you'll have a heart attack

Cocaine is 'the perfect heart attack drug' - even if you only use it only a few times a year

Cocaine is 'the perfect heart attack drug' with users at much greater risk of suffering cardiac arrest than people who do not take it, a new study has revealed.

Researchers found recreational cocaine users have higher blood pressure, stiffer arteries and thicker heart muscle walls than non-users – all of which can cause a heart attack.

The Australian study is the first to document some of these cardiovascular abnormalities in seemingly healthy cocaine users long after the immediate effects of cocaine have worn off.

The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the effects of the drug in 20 otherwise healthy adults who 'chronically' used the illegal substance.

Compared with 20 non-users, those taking cocaine had higher rates of the multiple factors associated with increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

in general the statement is ridiculous however if you are obese then... that changes things
crack and fat people dont mix well just ask chris farley and john candy

You can deny the side effects all you want, that doesn't mean they don't exist. I know a few people who work in a hospital who are completely open to drug use (meaning smoke weed regularly, do coke occasionally along with other drugs) and you would not believe how often people suffer heart attacks due to cocaine use.

Maybe the claim the article is making is overstated. But if you're doing coke on a monthly basis, your heart isn't going to be very happy. Don't expect to live a long life.

The thing that got me is, the article says the study involved people taking it AT LEAST once a month, yet the title suggests everybody only used it once a month. We get it DM, you hate drugs, but can you stop bending the truth.

The Daily Mail always does this little trick: there's a study with chronic users, and they put out a headline with "Even a Few Times a Year..."

Yeah I've heard that cocaine is highly cardiotoxic, so I guess it's true then?

Not too shocked that blowing an 8 ball once doesn't make your heart too happy.

What would be more interesting is if they studied people who had coca tea or coca leaves, perhaps even on a regular basis, and how they fared in comparison to non users.

I mean the fact that blowing a bunch of coke isn't good for you heart is really old news. And even if the study is "once a month"... who honestly does one line of cocaine once a month? Nobody ever.

i mean it is kind of common sense that u know uppers like coke or meth are gonna make your heart beat faster thus putting added stress on it and if you combine this with any other risk factors such as heart disease or obesity well...
1+1 usually = 2

It's more than just the tachycardia, meth, although not exactly good for your heart either, causes a fraction of the heart attacks that coke does. IIRC it has something to do with the local anesthetic property restricting blood flow, but I'm not an expert on coke.

I have just one question here, given the prevalence of Cocaine use (300,000 to 500,000 regular users in the UK alone), then why don't we see huge numbers of heart attacks, especially in users and ex users of Cocaine?

Drug related deaths since 1999 (USA)

All 3 graphs show that cocaine is causing a lot of hospital admissions/deaths, coming out at #1 on all 3 charts, by a very large margin in 2 of them. It's hard to be sure without usage statistics, but I can't imagine there are, for example, more people using cocaine than amphetamine, MDMA and 4-mmc combined in the UK, meaning cocaine appears to be causing far more incidents compared to other stimulants.

So yeah, in short, you are seeing a huge number of heart attacks in cocaine users in the UK.

Actually i think hes mistaking the second chart as "deaths" but at the bottom it is a chart of "hospital visits"

^^ hold up take a close look at the second chart, Marijuana and Heroin are tied by 1998??? or at least very very close

I think the mid to late 90s were when drug courts popped up everywhere in the US. My guess is that many of those hospital admissions have to do with forced rehabilitation as an alternative to jail time. Forced rehab has little to do with medical necessity.

i did read the charts correctly thank you 23536 that answer makes a little bit of sense
it seemed bizarre to me that so many people needed to be hospitalized for smoking weed

I think you guys are forgetting how easy it is for inexperienced smokers to overdo it and set of a nasty anxiety attack. To someone raised on scare propaganda and who has no idea what's happening, their first reaction is going to be 'wtf is happening? am I dying?' and to get to a hospital. Now consider how much more popular marijuana is than heroin, and the numbers make sense.
