How long until I can smoke after lasik eye surgery?

I've been nearsighted and wearing glasses/contacts for about the past 10 years, and while I'm still young I'm thinking about having lasik eye surgery done. I just recently found out my insurance covers it, so I've been thinking about it a lot the last couple days since my parents brought it up. Have any of you had it done or know anyone that has had it done? From what I've heard it's a great procedure to have done with minimal risks. I'm wondering how long until I could smoke again, or if I'd need to take a break at all. I've heard your eyes get pretty dry and you can't rub them at all for up to around 1 month. I do wear contacts, but when I smoke my eyes don't really get dry unless I've already been wearing my contacts for 12 hours or so straight. I also don't really want to bring it up with my doctor, even though I know I should. I think this could be a great benefit to me, and I really miss the days of good vision before glasses / contacts and I'd love to not deal with that stuff anymore. Any insight would be great, I haven't found too much besides the occasional google search. I would be willing to give up smoking for several weeks for a lot better vision for sure, but I don't know if it's not worth smoking for something to 6 months to a year later. I don't know if I could give it up for that long.

I haven't had lasik surgery but have had glaucoma surgery and had no issues smoking when I got home but it is a very differnt procedure so I am not completely sure.

A guy I used to date had lasik done during the time I knew him and he was a major pothead. He had to avoid all smoking because it can cause vaso-dilation in the eyes and during healing that's a no-no. I think for a lot of people cannabis causes their eyes to get dry too which would suck if you've just had a new lens attached to your eye.

As for how long, I don't remember. He was supposed to wear strong protective sunglasses anytime he went outside, for like a week, because apparently UV can damage the recovery.

Based on all that, my gut feeling is that you'd have to wait a while before lighting up again. It's your eye. Don't want to fuck with that, right?

^ doc may just say "never," but hurting probably won't ask unless you mind "SMOKES DRUGS" going on your medical history....

I'd consult with someone other then BL, personally, since we are not health experts, and YMMV. I'd wait for others who have had it done to chime in, but my ex GF had it done and smoked a few days later.

I had a friend that knew a guy that had the lasik surgery done, smoked that same day and went blind for 7 hours. Don't do it, bro...

Came across something on the internet which was a Doctor who does this procedure answering your question. Came across it when I was searching for info on the ghosting I get in my right eye. Don't take my word as law but I remember him saying his patients who enjoyed cannabis would have to stop smoking it for about a month after the surgery just to be safe because of vasodilation and it drying out the eyes a bit too.

I looked into it more, and this is sounding right. My eyes are going to be much more sensitive to anything and can't be touched or rubbed at all for at least a few weeks. I will have to wear sunglasses outside, and inside and I'll have to wear these clear protective ones when I sleep.

My vision is supposed to be cloudy for awhile. Seeing in the dark will be harder and there's a big possibility I'll see halos around lights for a few months - forever. I heard it doesn't really effect your ability to drive though, which is what I was most worried about.

As far as smoking, sounds like a no go for along time to me too. Your right, I only have one pair of eyes and there a huge part of life. Not something I'd want to play around with. I still think the outcome is worth it, and it's not like I have to quit forever just until I'm fully healed. Still sucks though...

^ Just look at it as a healthy break from smoking for the time being. Your lungs and eyes will thank you. And once your eyes are healed you'll get to experience 20/20 in the world as a stoner. :)

In the mean time try to be patient and let your body heal up. :)

If you must continue getting high after the surgery why not look into using tinctures or eating it?

I have considered getting lasik and directly asked them what time frame they recommended for not smoking and they told me 3 months minimum.

I don't think it matters because whatever way I consume cannabis, my eyes will usually dry out to some degree. My eyes usually turn more red if I eat a lot of edibles, compared to if I smoke a lot of weed. I don't think this would a safe alternative to smoking, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Either way I think it will be best to take a break altogether.

I'm also concerned about if I'll be able to smoke cigarettes. They don't really mess with my pupils or cause the eyes to dry out, but maybe the smoke itself could become an issue if it got in my eye. That I should ask my doctor about.

They do effect the dilation of blood vessels and the irration from the smoke won't be good either. Just give up for a month and after that choose whether you want to go back to either. The weed will probably yeah fair enough but after not smoking cigs for a month you could then permanently quit them easily. Give me one good reason to start smoking all over again?

I see them anyway they're not that bad
