Amitriptyline side effects?

So I went to the GP on Tuesday to talk about medication for my back problem and insomnia. As I've had a Subutex script for detox im not allowed opiate painkillers and even for Amitriptyline it has been a battle as my previous GP was a dick.

So we talked and she said to try Amitriptyline I was a bit nervous as I have heard bad things about it. Anyway im on 10MG a day and it WORKS! I could not believe it, the pain was gone even heroin and subutex could not quite get rid of the pain.

However what are the side affects of Amitriptyline and drug interactions I should look out for, as I may put up the have another dose of 10MG in the afternoon as it can ware off a bit.

I really am amazed it works so well im so so so happy %)

My GF was on Amitriptyline for a while for back problems also (slipped disc) she ended up stopping them as they sent her a bit loopy, irrational behaviour, flying off the handle at minor things, mood swings stuff that was really out of character she also mentioned her thought processes being affected.

At that dosage I would imaginet your sides will be minimal. Expects drowsiness, slugishness kid day. This was a 50mg daily sleep aid so its likely you will have any sides at all, but they'll be minimal.
Different meds affect different people, use them as the Dr says and if u are worried about anything or? Not kind em take them back.
I think its a pretty safe compound to be honest, and once you ridden out the side effects its a really effective drug at many things.

Its a very old drug- trycyclic antidepressant - use to use it in mental hospitals , liquid cosh with thorazine BUT in low doses it works very well for nerve pain

I had it for nerve pain and it worked a little, reduced the amount of strong opiates I was taking (was on 100mg tramadol 3x a day beforehand...). 10 and 20 mg were ok for me, however when I upped to 30mg it sent me rather loopy after a couple of weeks on the higher dose, had a small manic episode where I ended up doing and saying a few silly things when I didn't realise it was the drug making me feel that way. Stopped them and it went away immediately.

So be wary of upping the dose past 20mg and take note of any mood changes. I can't believe people used to take 100s of mg of this stuff tbh!

Thas funny, i just started it on that dose for exactly the same reason. Does seem to have some effect but definitely doesn't get rid of all the pain...and yep, sedation and feeling not-quite-right is par for the course. I'm gonna take it back and ask for something stronger, still yet to try gabapentin or pregablin...

I'm on Gabapentin instead now and it has far less side effects, would definitely recommend it - I'm on a fairly high dose and there is a small element of drowsiness but its nowhere near what Amitryptaline causes. Also it can be taken in steady doses throughout the day rather than one big one at night, so its a more consistent effect IME.

I tried this recently for both pain and insomnia, 10-20mgs did absolutely nothing for me at all, I may as well have been taking sugar tablets.

Others do report good effects even at low doses and my physio said he had seen good responses to it for nerve pain.

I wouldn't feel to hard done by for not getting opiate pain killers, they seem stupidly reluctant to give them to anyone for more than a week or two unless you're terminally ill

I could kick myself because I found many prescritions the doctor wrote and never filled them. He would give 100 mg and I cut them in half. It works well to help with sleep but really didn't do much for pain. I'm an insomniac and benedryl doesn't last very long.

I'd a pal who'd use vast amounts of smack, coke, downers, speed and booze and stay completely in control but the moment he added amils to the mix he'd go totally doolally. Weird.

I went on ami's after going cold turkey from the morph, DHC, trams, oramorph and fentanyl they were great and 2 weeks later I stopped them! Really helped me while getting off the opiates!

Feeling monged out, eventually enough to get some sleep and waking up with the dry mouth to end all dry mouths (you really do need a litre of water to wake up to).
You will find yourself "waking up" still feeling like you've had a frontal labotomy for a bit, but that will pass.

My pains are, as far as I know, psychosomatic and I still end up hurting even when I've added my Codeine and Ibuprofen into the mix.

At first I didn't think I had any withdrawal symptoms from it (Tricyclics in general) but then went a week or so without and I rediscovered how bad my depression and anxieties were.
So I'd definitely not recommend stopping "cold turkey" as it's not nice.

Though all this is subjective, and you may find yourself having worse or no such symptoms.

I'm taking 150-200mg at the moment. I can't imagine as little as 50mg having any effect for me whatsoever, but I was on Dosulepin beforehand.
Good luck to those trying it out.

--- Edit ---

Oh - With MDMA and akin substances, I've found X-mg to be much less potent, but with Shrooms (and possibly LSD) there seems to be a lesser dose necessary for wanted effect.
BUT AGAIN this is subjective.

Be safe.

Hi Monsta:) glad to see you're still up and kickin.

I've been avoiding MDXX and alike since going on ADs the ever present risk of Serotonin Syndrome has kept me away.

Yo atm.
More lying down and twitching than up and kicking lol, but cheers <3

Yea I've always pondered this - At first I thought "Arg SS!" but then, after doing a bit of reading and what not, I thought:
Serotonin / Norepinephrine / Dopamine reuptake inhibitor....
Which got me thinking if the transfer of [enter monoamine here] is just inable to be reuptaken or the actual flow was hindered both ways.

Obviously I don't hold a degree (or much knowledge whatsoever) in neurochemical biology, so I could just have been lucky all the times I've taken MDxx's or Coke etc. or my pondering was correct.
Though for HR's sake I would urge people to go down the monsta-is-making-up-whatever-shit-he-can-so-he-can-take-drungs-despite-being-on-an-antidep route 8(
As a hooker from Chelsea would say, that was a mouthful.

monsta I'm not sure if you were referring to me when you were saying cold-turkey was tough going. Was it? Reckon I'll be feeling the negatives after just 2 weeks? I was on 50mg for one week, then upped it to 100mg the following week. Took 50mg last night, 25 tonight, and that'll be all.
Oh I was just reffering to me personally.
Yea man I really wasn't expecting it to be so harsh but I will say that withdrawals from any other Antidep I've been on have been worse, what with brainshocks and all that bizniz.
I think it's because I'm also taking it for depression & anxiety that it comes back to bite me in such a way.
If you're taking it for nerve pain then I doubt it would have such harsh withdrawals.

..... I don't have a clue why I'm so typee this morning :?
