Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

I grew up in North Carolina and my father was an executive for a tobacco company. Do you realize what tobacco did for this country in the early years of it's growth? Of course you don't. It was a vital commodity and produced a lot of money for poor Southern countries. It has been replaced by video games and lots of channels on television which cause kids to get fat....wait, not fat ...obese!!! They lose touch with almost all humankind by staying indoors and not smoking but becoming couch shit. At least in my day we rode our bicycles to the store to buy cigarettes. Then we rode same bicycles to a friends house to smoke them.Exercise and smoking. That's at least better than today's kids just sitting in a chair rotting away to television.

Most ridiculous response ever.

Honestly, society just needs a pariah. People need something to hate, and because tobacco smoking is a bad habit, we as a society expend a lot of energy making life miserable for smokers.

My college just banned smoking entirely, not even in designated zones. Basically, they don't want smokers to attend. They still don't have enough security to prevent me from smoking anywhere I want, fortunately, but it seems like a fucked up policy, considering the entire campus is outdoors (except for the classrooms, of course). People who smoke, need to smoke in order to concentrate. Some people have short (as little as 10 minutes) breaks between a couple classes and might need a cigarette between those classes, and they do not have the option to go off campus due to time constraints. The entire policy, and much of smoking policy in general, seems cruel to smokers.

IMO, it was fine when they banned smoking in restaurants and most indoor places (although they went too far banning it at any bar that serves food, what the fuck?), but they should have stopped anti-smoking legislation there. Non-smokers have a right to not be confined with cigarette smoke, to not have to inhale it while they are eating or on an airplane, but smokers should have every right to smoke in every non-confined space they want to. Additionally, smokers need more accessible smoking zones in places like airports, unless they want people lighting up in their bathrooms all the time. It's time for the non-smokers to learn basic consideration and manners.

Our district hospital system has adopted a no-smoking campus as well. It used to be if patients or staff wanted to smoke, there were designated spaces outside in a courtyard to do so. Recently, it's a non smoking zone anywhere. People started walking to the residential street surrounding the hospital - I mean walking a couple blocks over just to have a cigarette. Now neighbors are upset that these displaced smokers are doing it in front of their homes and leaving behind cigarette butts all over. I understand being a hospital they want everyone to quit and be healthy but it's a shit policy.

Smokers quite simply need to stop folding like fucking sheep. Seriously. If im in an outdoor area, who the FUCK are you to tell me not to. What are you going to do, take it out of my mouth? Ill fuck you up, son. Just try it. People have, and they regretted it.

I understand smoking inside can be disrespectful, due to people not having the option of breathing it in, and because indoor environments have low airflow, meaning it will linger for a long time.. if im outside, there is absolutely no problem.

No smoking signs outside are a fucking joke, get real. And to all you smokers out there reading this, stand the fuck up for your rights. Dont let ANYONE tell you that you cant smoke your ciggy outside. Learn some CQB and break peoples arms if neccasary, no one has the right to touch you because you are smoking a cigarette.

You're all getting very angry over this topic.

I am a chronic asthmatic and I find it incredibly hard to breathe when there is cigarette or any other smoke around me. This can present a very real and dangerous problem when I go out onto the street and there are people smoking. I will often have to go out of my way to avoid standing near them / downwind from them, but sometimes it's impossible for me to do.

Surely you guys understand that smoking is YOUR choice. Surely all of the other citizens of legal age around the world should have a choice whether to smoke or not also? Your actions of smoking in public areas are taking away my choice, and my ability to live a happy and healthy life.

Not to mention the poor children who are unfairly affected by passive smoking. :|

Yes, everyone should just conform to your way of life and short comings. All the cars should stop driving around with there fumes flying everywhere because YOU cant handle the smoke, right. haha.

I find it incredibly hard to smile when fat obese disgusting people are everywhere, so maybe i should start telling obese people to get out of my sight because they are upsetting me and bringing down my level of happiness.

Smoking is proven to be detrimental to people's health. I could care less if you want to ingest the intricate mixture of chemicals into your own body, however I have a problem with having it thrust into my body without my consent.

I have a right to protect my health.

I started smoking cigarettes in September 1976. At that time a person could smoke in a bank, supermarket or even go to a non smokers house and they would have an ashtray handy. Now you can't even get a non smoking section anywhere. My question is, what has happened to society!!? You can drink yourself to death in a bar (and I do) and drive home (and I do) but God forbid you smoke!!! I wanna know why this has come to pass. Enlighten me please!!

We moved on.

Difficult to find a spittoon anywhere, either. :(

Smokers had 100 years to prove they were considerate enough to smoke in public and unfortunately they failed miserably. I have a wardrobe litered with shirts ruined by cigarette burns that fail to convince me that any smoker is considerate to their environment. I can walk my streets for several hours and still be able to wear the same shirt the next day, pity I can't say the same for sitting a room for half an hour with a smoker. Lets not forget the horrible stale smell of a day old dirty ash tray, thats when they aren't just tossed into the nearest garden.

For me smoking should be on par as swearing. Most social settings do not allow to to drop "fuck" or "cunt" within a certain radius of other people, especially children and more polite circles and the same restrictions should apply to tobacco.

Child, I'm already feeling like a disgusting person each time I go to hospital. I have emphysema and I'm an old woman. I don't thrust smoke down on anybody's throat but my own. You have a right to protect your health as I have the right to smoke myself to death. No shit it's proven to be detrimental to people's health. We know this already. It might bother you in the open air outside. "Oh damn someone's having a cigarette, I might have an asthma attack! OMG"

You could walk past and be okay. Really I am sick of do gooders telling me how I'm fucking them up by smoking.

Non smokers could walk by, just as you don't have to stand next to us waiting to cross the road at a red light. How about not congregating out the front of every public building like a group of desperate paparazzi? How about not throwing your butts out of car windows or worse yet burying them in the sand at the beach?

It would personally be less inconvenienced if you were plugging your nicotine fix up your arse rather than blowing your toxic stink into the air I breath.

I am an occasional smoker and never understood how it is possible that bar/pub owner can decide to ban smokers, but not to ban non-smokers. I mean, I should have the right to make my place a smoker-only place, if I wish, shoudn't I? Still, I would install some ventilation/air filtering mechanism - small rooms saturated with smoke are disgusting also to me.

This said, I lived in Israel - they have anti-smoking law, but no one really cares. Me and my friends were smoking in pub and the waiters would tell us not to make improvised ashtrays, but to dump everything on the ground (lol). Maybe it's the promised land for smokers, but it made me see how some smoking restrictions are actually good...

Smokers are like those who refuse to wear deodorant. You just don't realise how much you stink after you have just smoked a dart and start talking into our faces.

Busty how did all those burnholes end up in your clothing?
Another thing, sometimes the kids need to be called out on their stupidity. If my son's acting up I will call him a dumb fuck because he needs it. Obviously you have no children. Stop being a cunt. I don't blow smoke in your face so kindly shut your mouth.

My point exactly in my last post. It didn't come across right but. People let their kids hog out on sugar and high fat foods and watch television all day. These kids are going to be tomorrows obese persons. It is unsightly for me to see a grossly obese person on the street or to see a same sex couple displaying (affection?) in public. Should we ban all behavior because a few people say it makes them feel ill to their stomachs?

Because mindless drones don't even like their own cigarette smoke in their face so rather than keep it between their lips they hold it behind them while standing in a crowded bar, resting it into the nearest strangers shirt or arm.

It is knid of ironinc that someone who chooses to smoke a drug that doesn't even provide a high calling other people stupid. It takes a special type of retarded to inhale tobacco when the enjoyment comes not from the active ingredient but from the unleashing from the shackles of addiction. Even my two kids know about the proven health risks from smoking. Cigarette smokers make paint sniffers look like geniuses.

My school is like this. We currently have to use a few people as "lookouts" for teachers or prefects. Getting caught can result in suspension/expulsion, even if you are of the legal smoking age.

Do you realize what slavery did for this country??? Ha ha ha okay, I get it, I give up now.... 8)
Who said anything about slavery? I've picked many, many rows of tobacco when I was younger. I was merely pointing out the fact that tobacco was and is a cash crop. When the people from England and Europe first settled this county it was a very important commodity. Oh, on the point of slavery, only one half of one % of people in North Carolina owned slaves. That was a rich man's luxury. The rest of the good folks in the Tarheel State did things themselves and still do!! Stop twisting my words please.

Don't compare smoking with chemical sniffing, you're an asshole. You don't know me or my fucking kid.
