Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

reading about peoples allergic reactions, even if they are 50 metres downwind from you have a cig outside

causing them to be unable to breath etc, makes me support not smoking indoors

my mom has asthma so being around cigarettes makes her breathing difficult as well

i smoke myself but want to quit soon its a filthy habit and if you smoke more than 3 cigs a day and think you enjoy it your deluding yourself or your perpetually rolling or drunk

There are even companies that will not hire smokers. Doesn't matter if you do it in the privacy of your own home. They "test" you for tobacco. This is fucking big brother we read about but never believed would happen. :(

I didn't know this! That's ridiculous!

I'm not a smoker (at least not cigarettes). I hate the smell of cigarettes. I hate it when smokers blow smoke in my face. I know they don't do it on purpose but it's gross and it smells bad and yes it does make me cough. I don't like second hand smoke. I don't like breathing in smoke either. I really wish that smokers would only smoke in designated places. I guess I see things from the other side, since I don't smoke. But it doesn't seem fair that non-smokers are forced to breathe in second hand smoke when we are just walking down the street and stuff like that.

there are plenty of things that bother me i can't choose to avoid in society. if i am legally smoking somewhere, you can fucking handle it or fuck off.

the not hiring smokers is a policy i have noticed, especially with any hospital job even a receptionist.

not best to complain about your rights as a smoker while telling everyone you drive drunk, however.

HL --> DC?

Uh, so yeah, passive smoking as it's called in the literature definitely carries an increased risk of lung cancer. The risk is comparable to that of heavy alcohol consumption, which is why I think smoking bans in bars are a wee bit ironic. Trying to avoid smoking inside is still a good idea, and if the owner of a building wants to ban smoking inside, that's totally fine.

Passive smoking strictly refers to indoor exposure to cigarette smoke, generally prolonged exposure. Walking past a smoker outside carries very little risk.

Smoking bans, where they occur, are probably a result of three things: litter, misinformation, and the natural desire of people in marble buildings to control everyone and everything.

to anyone that doesnt like secondhand smoke, maybe you shouldnt go near cigarette smokers.. just a thought. i mean, smokers kinda have the short end of the stick already, so dont complain. no one likes to hear it.

Im a smoker, and im part of the generation of smokers that never got to enjoy indoor smoking. Im in my early 20's and started smoking at 18. Tbh, i think its all a load of shit. People happily breath in the fumes from traffic while driving around/walking on footpaths, but god forbid they breath in a little bit of my smoke. Jeez, people now have no idea of how much CRAP we naturally breath in. Do people even realize how much smoke you are exposed to when you have a camp fire? Well, thats how MOST of our ancestors up to about 150-200 years ago had heat. Smoke is a natural part of our lives as far as im concerned, complaining about it is like complaining about wind or rain, its just another natural element that our bodies can handle in moderation.

Anyway, i dont give a fuck, if im already about to leave a restaurant, ill smoke up. If im about to hop off at the next train stop, ill smoke up. If im in a semi-outdoors area with natural ventalation, ill smoke up.

And anyone that comes up to me that says to put it out, i tell to mind their own business, and that if they werent so up in my face they wouldnt be breathing it in. If they continue, i pull out my knife, and wave it around, telling them to fuck off or ill really make a problem for them.

This system works great!

Oh and to add: I have enjoyed the smell of second hand smoke my whole life, especially benson and hendges. Imo, its pretty much incense.. only it doesnt smell like shiot.

Last week, outside the courthouse my son coughed and this asshole said "cover your mouth". I turned around and told him to go fuck himself but wanted to punch him in the balls. It's not like the kid has TB, just a tickly throat. Some people are overly paranoid.

It's a good thing to cover your mouth when coughing, so you don't spew your inner germs and slime on people and objects around you. Whatever it is that makes your kids throat tickly is now all over the courthouse and that dude you wanted to punch in the balls.
I don't know how old your kid is, but it's never too late to learn some manners.

We were walking outside and it's not like he was coughing up mucous.
He knows basic manners, k thx

As a non-smoker i must say i find the constant waft of second hand smoke in my face not that great tbh.

I tried a cigarette when i was 7, got 1/3 of the way and decided it was absolutely foul.
Having the right to Clean smoke free airspace has priority over that of somebody simply wanting to smoke in a public place.

Also i notice when i hang around smokers for a long time all my clothes and stuff stink of tobacco and personally i don't like going around smelling awful.

I'm 21.

Tried cigarettes when I was 15. Did not really get into them. However later on in high school (16, 17) when I started drinking, I started smoking more often - just when I was intoxicated. For some reason when I'm drunk, I enjoy the feeling of smoke in my lungs. Ever since February, I toned down my smoking a whole lot. These days I still usually only smoke when I'm intoxicated (few times a month), and when I'm stressed out. I'd say I smoke a max of 4-5 cigarettes a week.

I don't really mind people smoking in public, I believe they have the right to. It's their Earth too and they can utilize the air. I think that it's a good thing to do it by a building-by-building basis as far as "rules of smoking" in a public location indoors, as everyone shares the same air space. Outdoors I think it's fine to smoke in public. People should respect other peoples decisions and rights as far as smoking in public goes. If you don't like someone smoking around you for whatever reason, simply step further away from them.

I don't think it's a question of manners. I have accidentally let out a small cough without covering my mouth. I am very aware of germs but just touching a door knob will expose you to as many or more germs as a small cough. My point was I grew up in an age where people weren't whining pussies. I smoked in public in the 70's and early 80's and every now and then a person would ask me to put my cigarette out and no problem, I put the cigarette out. It's just a question of tolerance. I tolerate a lot of things and people nowadays that I don't agree with but I try not to treat people like they are lepers.

I started smoking in the late 70's when I was about 14. I remember going to the gas station and buying myself (no id needed) three packs of Marlboro Lights for 1.80. In 1981 my daughter was born (very healthy thankyouverymuch) and I started taking her to a pediatrician that a friend recommended and I remember the doctor lighting up a smoke in the exam room. I remember lighting up on an airplane. Now at work I have to walk off the property to a sidewalk for a smoke break.
I am a sellout smoker though. I always said my own home is the one place no one will ever tell me I can't smoke. But I started doing abused dog rescues and some of the dogs had really bad breathing problems, couple that with my grand daughter living with me and now I take my bad habit and go out on the deck. I hate myself for it.

There is little evidence that second hand smoke outdoors is harmful to other people, but for indoor inhalation there is plenty of evidence. People shouldn't have to endure being in a confined space with another smoker. For many people it's a migraine or allergy trigger, just like artificial fragrances are.

I think tobacco smoke reeks but when outdoors it's mostly just unpleasant. I can easily walk away or find somewhere else to be. If I'm stuck indoors I shouldn't have to be subjected to it. The same goes for smoking weed or anything else. I respect your choice to smoke now respect mine not to.

I'm a smoker, but I really can't wrap my head around how so many of you feel entitled to smoke in enclosed areas with nonsmokers. This is one of the most bizarre threads I've seen (including the stuff in the Lounge), and it contains some of the most ridiculous logic for why it is okay to smoke inside.

I grew up in North Carolina and my father was an executive for a tobacco company. Do you realize what tobacco did for this country in the early years of it's growth? Of course you don't. It was a vital commodity and produced a lot of money for poor Southern countries. It has been replaced by video games and lots of channels on television which cause kids to get fat....wait, not fat ...obese!!! They lose touch with almost all humankind by staying indoors and not smoking but becoming couch shit. At least in my day we rode our bicycles to the store to buy cigarettes. Then we rode same bicycles to a friends house to smoke them.Exercise and smoking. That's at least better than today's kids just sitting in a chair rotting away to television.
