Leonard Rossiter was a pretty good actor spade. I wouldn't crucify him just on the basis of this.
 
How many of these allegations against dead celebrities will prove to be impossible to substantiate or actual fabrications? Hasn't one hospital trust already said that one of the stories about jimmy savile came from a porter who it turned out didn't even work at the hospital until ten years after the time when it was meant to have been going on?
 
We must be mindful of seeing allegations in print and immediately assuming them to be true or the whole truth. Ismene makes fair points, its better to wait for trials/investigations as I learned when that girl in Bristol was murdered. They arrested the neighbour, that mad looking teacher if you remember. Poor guy was completely innocent and had the nation vilifying him as a weirdo and a murderer, all the stuff in the papers about him, people crawling out of the woodwork to sell stories about him. Poor guy.

I'm not really sure what your point is about the age of consent and the Virgin Mary.

If a lion appears on the edge of a herd of zebra they all panic and stampede in the opposite direction, is a survival thing I guess. The public need to know about these things, and any abuse of the vulnerable needs to be investigated & acknowledge. But its up to us as individuals to keep a balanced mind.

I sure wouldn't want any association with Jimmy Saviles name or image, would you?
 
. I understand the point that FAH is making, laws and cultural norms change. There wasnt quite the same level of vilification for Roman Polanski and his 14 year old wife/girlfriend was there. Or for Bill Wyman for that matter.

Not so long ago, sex between 2 consenting men was a criminal offence, before the 'climate' changed and the law with it. In the past sex with 13 year old girls was 'OK', now its reviled. In a hundred years time or less, things may have changed again.

In this present climate paedos are without doubt the number one scapegoat created by the media, over and above illegal immegrants, extremist muslims, junkies, 'benefit scroungers', teenage yobs etc, as they think everyone needs a section of 'society' to hate.

Aye FAH, and Charlotte Church being awarded 'rear of the year' by The Sun the moment she turned 16. A rare moment of hypocracy there from these quality newspapers.

On Have I got News For You the other night, there was a mention of the Mail Online, one of the most hysterical papers about this whole Saville thing, showing a picture of a 14 year old girl in a bikini, commenting on her toned body or something.

There's been loads of pop songs about 'sweet 16' over the years (though mostly from further back in history).

agree. It doesn't matter one bit how good he was at acting, charity work, visiting old peoples homes, whatever....he watched a rape (allegedly) and did nothing to stop it, or to report it afterwards...

Yeah I remember one of those dross papers having a countdown to Hermione from Harry Potter films 16th birthday....fucking disgusting..

Its all a bit grey innit, just cos someone is 16, doesn't mean it's open season....I don't think anyway...

I don't see a problem with a 14 year old girl having sex with her 15, 16 year old boyfriend...even a couple of 12-13 year olds, if they are being safe and willing...

But at some point the age difference makes it wrong..like a 24 year old man with a 16 year old girl? A 22 year old man with a 14 year old girl? A 36 year old man with a 17 year old girl?

It's not something you can legislate against in any concrete way, but children do need some protection...

I'm glad I don't have to make these decisions.

My wife works with youth homelessness, and she has a number of 16-24 year old clients, males, who are on the sex offenders register. Often wrongly (not wrongly in the eyes of the law, but morally. This is fucking up their lives and their prospects of ever gettng their lives sorted.

Saville was one of the wrong 'uns though, without a doubt.

Why is the man always the older one in your examples? It's not like older women never sleep with young guys, do you think that's as bad as the other way round?

What about if the bird is 18 (no longer a kid, now considered an adult) and the guy is 65?

It is a grey area indeed. I was about 15 when I had sex.. I was with the lad for a year and stayed with him for about 6 years.There was nothing ugly about it at all.

A girl from my daughters school had just turned 16, she's had long term mental health issues and was really vulnerable. A couple of lads took advantage of that, got her drunk and some pretty hardcore sex acts were taped. Apparently they tormented her with the video for some time before sharing it with most of the school then putting it online!

The girl had a breakdown. Windsor has quite a tight knit community the lads have been shunned pretty much but because the girl had turned 16 there is nothing legally that can be done.

His position, whether it be in the corner or casually in the vicinity of, is neither here nor there.

He willingly took pleasure from a sadistic act upon another human, without stopping the event.

He was complicit, and should be treated exactly the same as those commiting the rape imo.

you're right Spade, it does happen the other way round, but overwhelmingly not. Sometimes it's bad , sometimes not, in BOTH cases (older male, or older female)

I really don't know what the law should be, as I said. I don't think any law could comprehensively legislate this issue to protect all those who are vulnerable, without persecuting those in genuine loving respectful relationships....

Its a shame we can't rely on human nature and a collective sense of shared morality.
