A ‘DELUSIONAL’ cannabis user bit off a nursing assistant’s thumb in a mental health unit, a court heard.

Dean Taylor, aged 47, was taken to the unit after he was arrested at the Ibis Hotel, in Barlborough, Chesterfield, where he was found in a ‘very confused and distressed’ state.

Sheffield Crown Court heard a psychiatrist had assessed him as ‘delusional’ on the day of his arrest.

On Taylor’s admittance to a mental health unit, he was described as ‘intimidating and aggressive’.

David Wain, prosecuting, said he was ‘shouting and behaving aggressively and violent like an animal’.

He grabbed a nurse’s throat and headbutted her and, when staff tried to restrain him, Taylor bit the tip of the care assistant’s thumb off.

Taylor was found not guilty of assaulting three mental health workers on the grounds that he was insane at the time.

But he was given a hospital order and a restriction order, to protect the public, after the court heard his ‘serious’ use of cannabis was at the root of his behaviour.

Mr Wain said cannabis would not be available to him in hospital but he could obtain it in the community.

The court heard Taylor, of Wathwood Hospital, near Rotherham, was suffering from bi-polar disorder and had become increasingly worse in recent years.

Dermot Hughes, defending Taylor, said he had no memory of the incident.

The jury at Sheffield decided Taylor was suffering from a ‘disease of the mind’ at the time of the attacks and found him not guilty of the assaults.

Calling him a "cannabis user" is really beside the point.
It shows the newspaper's or writer's focus, but doesn't add anything to the story otherwise.
They could have called him a cannabis user, a caffeine user, a brother, a son, a Brit, a right-hander, a sport-fan, or a psychiatric patient.
The last one is the only one that really seems to be relevant to the thumb-biting, don't you think?

fucking stoners always trying to eat everything

:)

Ok. Its still surprising though. I'd like to hear whether there were any other drugs found in his system. I mean, if using meth or MDPV, fine, but cannabis?

And who exactly said it was at the root of his behavior? Him? The shrink? The lawyer? All of them?

Ganja is a healer plant not a hooker plant like the poppy pod.. ;)

edit:
nah j/k opium poppy is just fine in its raw form is okay, but you know what i mean.

Cannabis can be just as dependence-forming for some individuals as opium (pods, seeds etc).

It's all about frequency of use. Respect the drugs. If you smoke an eigth a day for months, whether it's opium or weed, you'll have a hard time waking up dead sober.
The withdrawal syndromes can be very different, but both can impact your daily life in a negative way.

Likewise, most people who smoke the occasional bowl or pop the occasional Percocet are unlikely to have much of a problem.

I think in this event an underlying psychiatric cause like bipolar, or polydrug intoxictaion, or even simple stress could be driving factors.

'Cannabis user', bit off care assistants thumb....but also has a mental illness, which is probably more related to the incident then the fact he is a cannabis user. But to slander cannabis and cause were cunts we are going to highlight the fact he uses cannabis.
