Misc Sleep-Aid alternatives to Seroquel

This is simply what it sounds like. I've been using Seroquel for sleep as a very good alternative to addictive recreational drugs like benzos and Lyrica or Neurontin for a long time. Especially taken every other day just knocks you out not to mention even counteracts stimulants). But now I want to quit for issues like difficulties in obtaining it and known serious side-effects (like weight-gain).

I'm just having promlems thinking of an alternative, or a sleep aid that actually works (unlike dolyxamine, benadryl, Valerian, Merlatonin, and all that stuff) AND isn't one of the addictive/recreational ones. 5-htp doesn't work for me either. I've heard of Tryptapine but not sure how easy it's to get.

Suspect a combination of different mild sleep-inducing drugs, like Niacin or St. John's Wort combined with some of the above is what I'll end up with. But what I'd really like to know is if there is any sleep inducing drug comparable to Seroquel, i.e. not over-the-counter, but legally available, and REALLY works without being recreational?

There really is no non-addictive medication that would help in severe insomnia... If there was one, there wouldn't be any reason to prescribe benzos for insomnia in the first place.

The antihistamine hydroxyzine blocks histamine and 5HT2A receptors like Seroquel, promoting sleep, but doesn't have the dopamine antagonist effect the causes the side effects of Seroquel. I tried hydroxyzine for my insomnia a year ago, and it worked for some time, but then I developed a tolerance to it. Maybe taken every other day it would work for a longer time.

Its disgusting that doctors use seroquel as a sleep aid

I get your point however the truth is that Seroquel works very well for this purpose and has helped many, including myself, by offering an excellent alternative to addictive or dependance causing medication and provides a natural sleep.

Of course its not ideal taking an antipsychotic if all you need is sleep and I truely hope Doctors are not prescribing it for this off label purpose without fully educating the patient. I do however believe that if you want to avoid the risks of addictive medications like those that have struggled with addiction in the past, I would recommend researching this alternative in detail to determine if the benefits outweigh the risks and then consult with your doctor. HR = Educating Yourself

No offense intended but this forum doesnt need emotional "Seroquel (or XXX drug) is nasty shit" type responses without at least a reason behind your hating since it does not encourage further education in the reader and may result in somebody who it might have helped not even considering looking into it further.

I would however love to know why there is no other drug that has the powerful sleep and anti dependance benefits like Seroquel without the antipsychotic properties. Seems like a massive gap in the market. Perhaps there is one, I would change over right away if I where not using Seroquel for its other major benefit of skipping the comedown on stims.

Im just saying dont take other members opinions as fact, educate yourself and make your own informed decision. Cheers.

i'd say try first-gen. antihistamines or mirtazapine. i've been using a combination of promethazine and mirtazapine for quite a while as a sleep aid now, at a fixed dosage (100mgs promethazine + 30mgs mirtazapine) and it doesn't seem to lose its effect in the way benzos for example do.

This.

Serequel's sedative properties stem from the fact that quetiapine is an antihistamine (among other things).

Correct, but it is far more powerful then the traditional antihistamine sleep aids for some reason.
I also believe taking higher doses of the other antihistamine sleep aids wont emulate the stronger Seroquel effects.

Or is there an antihistamine medication that does work like Seroquel?

Trazodone might be another one to give consideration to. It doesn't have that great of a side effect profile imo, but it's still no where near as bad as I found Seroquel (quetiapine) to be. It's the closest thing I can think of that's rx, non addictive, and effective at knocking you out in cases of extreme insomnia.

amitryptilene is also very sedating and a fairly good sleep aid, as are most TCAs in my experience.

^Seconded on the Trazodone for sleep. 50-100mg of Trazodone for sleep is much better than Seroquel at any dosage for sleep. Trazodone also has less side effects, and I take it every night and am still able to get some sleep while withdrawing from benzo's.
