im a recovering oxycodone addict i've been clean for 6 months. on sunday i had an emergency appendectomy and after the surgery i was prescribed oxycodone 5mg. im trying not to take them at all but im really in pain right now. if i take them as needed will i avoid becoming dependent again?

I doubt you will be able to take them as prescribed. You should try a non opioid pain killer first (metamizol, etc), they are not that bad if you want to stay clean. I get oxycodone for pain since 6 weeks and beeing a former opiate addict i have absolutly no control of my intake. I get my dose four times a day in a clinic. Not one time was i able to save up some pills to get some kind of buzz, pathetic...

I would not take it. Sometimes it is just better to deal with the pain, and in this case it is temporary anyway.

well the bottle says one every 4 hours and i did just that. yesterday i took one at 12, another at 5, and another before bed at 11. i have lots of self control from this aspect as i was snorting heroin and one day i decided to stop cold turkey..

Just don't move around too much and it shouldn't hurt after a few days. The only time it will probably hurt is if you are getting up, or turning your body. Take it easy and try to get by on OTC pain meds. I'm not saying you shouldn't take any of the oxycodone, but most people get the 5mg hydrocodones after that surgery and don't even need to take the full amount since the pain goes away after a few days.

So what's the question if you're already taking them as prescribed? O_o

Finish the script, don't get it refilled, don't think about it, and move on. Easier said than done, however.

I agree with taking them as directed. If you really truly and honestly don't think you can handle it then try other routes before taking your prescription, if not then there doesn't seem to be any reason for you to be kept in pain. Opiates/oids are strange little things in that taking them just for pain and never upping the dose save for pain-relief very rarely leads to a psychological dependence. When you have no more pain, simply dispose of them. Good luck!

If you take them as directed you shouldn't have any issues. Do consider adding analgesic adjuvants and combining with a nice anti-inflammatory. Opioids kind of suck on their own for pain.

i've decided that i just can not re introduce these drugs in my system, even 5mg. because even when i take that small dose i get a little buzz, and it reminds me of how good it felt to be on them which brings back the cravings. so i picked up some xanax and i'll be taking those and illbe taking those when i feel the need

That's not a lot better dude - if you can't handle the cravings from opioids benzos are going to be just as bad, but the w/d is even shiittier.

try asking your doctor for a toradol IM injection i'm not sure how often you would need one but IMO it's the best pain reliever thats not addicting
