Police: Student took LSD before campus shooting

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A nude University of South Alabama freshman had taken LSD and assaulted others before he chased the campus police officer who fatally shot him, authorities said Tuesday, though the student wasn't armed and didn't touch the officer.

Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran said at a news conference that 18-year-old Gil Collar took the drug during a music festival Saturday before assaulting two people in vehicles and attempting to bite a woman's arm.

Authorities said Collar then went to the campus police headquarters, where he was shot by university police officer Trevis Austin. Austin is on leave while investigators review the shooting.

Video taken by a surveillance camera showed Collar nude and covered in sweat as he pursued the retreating officer more than 50 feet outside the building, Cochran said. Collar got within 5 feet of Austin and the officer fired once, striking the student in the chest, Cochran said.

Cochran said Austin came out of police headquarters with his gun drawn after he heard Collar — a 5-foot-7, 135-pound former high school wrestler — banging on a door. While campus police typically carry pepper spray and a baton, Cochran said Austin was armed only with a gun during the confrontation.

The sheriff said it was unclear whether the officer could have avoided shooting even if he had a non-lethal weapon to subdue the student.

"Had the officer had a Taser or some other less lethal instrument I don't know if that officer would have had an opportunity to shoulder his pistol and to use something else because the events were evolving so rapidly and he was approaching so close," Cochran said.

Cochran said he had "serious concerns" about the killing of an unarmed student when he first heard what had happened, but he better understood the officer's decision to open fire after watching the videotape of the shooting.

"It's very powerful," said Cochran, whose agency is investigating the shooting along with the local district attorney.

Investigators are trying to determine who provided Collar with LSD and could charge that person with murder, Cochran said. Cochran said the information about Collar taking the drug came from people who were with him at the concert.

The New York-based American Council on Drug Education said LSD, also known as acid, can cause acute anxiety, panic, paranoia, psychotic behavior and an inability to recognize danger. Effects can last for hours, according to the group's website.

Cochran said authorities will allow Collar's family and media representatives to view the recording later, but it will not be released publicly.

In a statement issued Tuesday, University of South Alabama President Gordon Moulton said the school is cooperating with authorities and expressed condolences to Collar's family.

"The university is committed to a full and thorough investigation of this matter," he said.

Collar graduated earlier this year from Wetumpka High School, where a vigil planned in remembrance of the longtime prep wrestler will be held Tuesday night.

Friends and family have said that Collar was courteous, kind and popular in high school. They said the actions before the shooting were out of character for the normally quiet and reserved Collar.

Collar wasn't known as a troublemaker and had only two minor scrapes with the law, according to court records: a speeding ticket and a citation for being a minor in possession of three cigarettes in March. He paid a $25 fine for the tobacco possession.

Two acquaintances at the university have said that before the shooting Collar was out of sorts and appeared intoxicated. He was screaming profanities in the street and running around naked, said South Alabama student Bronte Harber.

Student Sarah Hay said Monday that Collar was the loudest of a group of four or five young men and some of the others were trying to get him to calm down. She said he was talking about being on a "spiritual quest."

There was no need to shoot him in the chest. He was unarmed.
What about a warning shot? What about shooting him in the foot?
This is a human life we are talking about.

Small guy. Maybe in good shape, but very likely much smaller than the cop.

Investigators are trying to determine who provided Collar with LSD and could charge that person with murder
The cop killed the guy, needlessly, and they want to charge the person who gave him the drugs with murder?
This is so twisted, I don't even know what to say.

lab confirmation or it wasn't LSD

Agreed. I would place money that this is a DOx or NBOME type chemical on blotter.

Oh come on man, It's not that clear cut, you should know that.

Hindsight is 20/20, right?

I mean, what would you do in that situation? You see a naked, psychotic kid who is running towards you at FULL speed. Your weapon is out (it shouldn't have been, though.), and you wait until the kid is 5 feet in front of you. He has ignored your command to stop, and he's obviously going to be some serious trouble. Do you let him tackle you, possibly wrestling your gun away from you and risking many more lives... or do you use that 1/4 of a second to make a single motion with your finger that killed the poor kid?

Obviously, this could have been avoided and should have never happened. But considering the situation, it's really not that outlandish, and I don't think the officer should be prosecuted at all. I don't know WHY THE FUCK he had his gun out to deal with a non-violent offender, but when it's out you can't just let someone tackle you with a gun in your hand, especially not someone on drugs.

I'm sorry, but shooting someone in the foot or thinking he could have holstered it in one second is just the classic liberal reaction to a shooting like this. If the gun is out, you need to be prepared to use it.

^yeah, i kinda agree.

he didn't have to wait till he was 5 yards away and pop him in the chest. surely a warning shot or one to the leg/foot to debilitate him would been more than sufficient. well he really needn't have fucking fired a shot in the first place:|

I trying to comprehend if what you were saying could actually be a persons genuine thoughts on such a matter and then I saw the bolded and had my confirmation of disregarding you as an imbecile.

because that makes me a conservative right?

No, politics have no fucking place in situation where someone died. I'm just pointing out that whenever this kind of thing happens, it's a liberals knee jerk reaction to say the officer was wrong and he could have taken them down in some superhuman way. Conservatives have a habit of saying how glad they are the junkie was put down, they're even more stupid. I belong to no political party, because I'm not a damn monkey and can think for myself.

But before you can judge... well, ANYONE, you need to put yourself in their shoes. Decisions are made in a split second, and personally, given the fact that his weapon was out and he was about to be charged by someone clearly out of their mind, I think it was justifiable. His life and others would have been at SERIOUS risk if the officers weapon was knocked out of his hand.

It's extremely unfortunate this kid had to die... the officer could have handled it in a much more humane manner if his weapon had been where it should have been... but the risk of losing his weapon is too great, in my mind, to have allowed him to tackle him and start a hand to hand fight. I mean, in that situation it was either take him down or risk his chances, and the lives of those around him, in a fight... what would you do?

Yeah, sure he could have shot him in the leg... but we've been over that in every other police shooting thread. That's not plausible in 90% of situations.

This is so insensitive I don't even know what to say. This is someone's life we're talking about. If you're a cop, and you have a small naked guy running at you, you better believe the cop is trained enough to restrain this clearly unarmed kid without even hurting him.

Insensitive? No, I'm being realistic. I'm extremely sorry that the kid died.. it's a tragedy, he was a well known and respected wrestler and had a lot of friends and family that will miss him dearly.... that doesn't mean I hate the cop for it though. He should have handled the situation differently, because his weapon should have never left the holster.. he didn't have any less than lethal weapons, but that doesn't mean you pull the gun out.... but if I put myself in his shoes at the exact second he took the shot, I might have made that same choice, and you could have too.

I mean, what would you do if there is a naked, obviously psychotic kid running at you? He was 5 yards away... maybe the officer didn't want to shoot, but he's way too close at that point for him to put his weapon away.. and you can't start wrestling with someone with a loaded gun in you're hand, that's not safe for the officer or anyone around him... it leaves one option to come to in the 1/100 of a second it takes you to make that decision.

The more I think about it though, the more I think he should probably be investegated for having his weapon out at all. There should have been no need for him to pull his weapon out unless his life was in danger... really he put himself in danger by taking his gun out.

this is pretty disturbing,
ive had a friend go psychotic on acid and he punched a mutual friend in the face etc and acting totally unlike himself
and he didnt deserve to get shot, his mind was just going NUTS

and a sheriff thought he had to put that kid down.... wtff

Video shows naked student calm before he's shot

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A video of the fatal shooting of a naked Alabama college student shows him with his arms outstretched and his palms open before a campus police officer fired.

(...)

The video shows the college student walking slowly toward a campus police station door twice, then pounding on it violently. An officer emerges with gun drawn. They move into the yard with the student approaching the officer. The shooting occurs less than 30 seconds after the officer comes outside. A second officer arrives, and the two officers wrestle the wounded man to the ground and handcuff him.

The video shows the 5-foot-7, 140-pound student never got closer to the officer than 4 feet and didn't try to grab his weapon, Beasley contended. The lawyer said the video also shows the officer didn't wait for backup to arrive before coming out of the station.

Sounds like straight up murder.

The guy was standing there with his arms out and the cop still shot him center mass?

Where Obama at? You can't trust cops to police themselves.

If it was one unarmed guy and I was a cop, I'd try to talk him down(hard for non-users to do). Failing that, restrain him. As a civilian, even if I had a weapon I'd just whop his ass. I was raised that it's better to lose a fight than to kill them like a butt-hurt bitch.

This is fucking Alabama. Cops have been know to be jackasses there. How do European cops manage to do their job without guns? They have drugs, alcohol and crazies too. Are American cops just pussies?

This whole "Drugs give you superhuman strength" is a fucking myth perpetuated by cops to justify murder. It goes back to the days when cops said they need to use more bullets with stronger guns because of "cocainized niggers". I don't care how much sherm or bath salts you're on, you can still get your ass beat.

Why then are we not arresting every store clerk who sold the alcohol to drunk drivers who killed someone. Its clearly not the drunk driver's fault, but whoever sold the guy the alcohol.

Seems to me like the cop shot him as a form of punishment for having done drugs, not in self-defence or defence of others. Then again I'm just a young poor drug-using Liberal so I have dat bias.
