You have good taste in Delta blues. Or gospel, if Willie's listening.
 
wow, you do like your delta huh. yeah love me some patton, i guess you know robert johnson too? the association between all three etc.. apparently charlie thought he was some hot shit cus of his unusual hair (which he attributed to being part native american i believe cherokee.. but thats not particularly important cus we know of course, that all americans regardless of age, race, creed or colour are part cherokee or native american. maybe its some spontaneous paroxysm of unconcious national guilt.. like the french and the whole monachy getting their heads removed deal)



my god what a tangent. anyway, so charlie thought he was the mac & apparently didnt treat his lady folk the way he should and this eventually culminated with charlie's girl at the time shacking up with son house (they were friends at that point and recorded the same studio, same day. pony blues was i believe one that charlie laid down in that session which is a classic obv)



tl:dr so son house gets it on with charlie p's mrs

Ever seen the R. Crumb Patton comic book where he hits his wife over the head with a guitar? I suspect you have, but if not, I believe it's online. :D

Yeah, I love Robert Johnson too. Didn't know that about Charlie's hair and the heritage story though. Cheers for that. :)
 
sam; i have never heard of that comic book but it sounds apt!


and i guess you know all about RJ's 'deal with the devil' or w/e. what isnt up for debate was his amazing skill.. some of the speed and complexity of his guitar playing is jaw dropping, especially when he's doing that seperate bass, rhythm & melody thing.. he's largely forgot about now but the hendrix of the day! and hendrix had amps which are much more forgiving and cover up defects in technique/mistakes that cannot be done on acoustic, RJ, son house and BWJ can all make me shiver when i hear them play guitar but aside from slide, where BWJ stands peerless.. it is fairly obvious RJ is a level beyond anyone else. strange death too



ive got a couple great ones about son house, i'll probably type them up in a bit
 
okay, going from memory (which is crap at best of times) son house had a brief flirtation with fame after recording and selling the tracks that were laid down same time as charlie et al, but then quickly disappeared into anonymity and it would seem - alcohol, after jazz etc took off and nobody wanted to hear delta anymore. when the 60's blues revival hit somehow muddy waters happened upon son house in a fairly bad state of affairs. he had sold his famous resonator guitar & had even forgotten how to play. one day when they were together a hanger-on of muddy started to laugh and make fun of the sorry looking old man in the corner - at which point the normally placid MW slapped & grabbed up the guy & told him in no uncertain terms that son house was THE MAN back in the day, was the reason he'd ever picked up a guitar & warned him to never disrespect him again


and like i said, son had forgot how to play. so muddy had some white kid who idolised son play his songs back to him & got him back playing again!

the john the revelator in front of audience one i told you about was after this period when son was rediscovered & reminded how to play. at the start of the song he mumbles somewhat incoherantly into the mic and appears nervous.. but when he begins to sing/play he is instantly transformed. another vid of son exists named 'forever on my mind' on youtube though is actually a version of levee camp moan, i believe. he is playing in some dive bar & in it you can see the deterioration in sons' appearence/health.. but the performance is spellbinding. you can hear the anguish in each line he speaks and for my money, is pure, undiluted blues straight from the pit of the soul. as the man once said himself - to play the blues you have to of had the blues.. 'like a low down worried heart disease' ..and its obvious that son, if nothing else - most certainly had done that
