So I got a haircut today and to my surprise noticed how much my hair has thinned on the top..

This is really bizarre because as far as I know there's no genetic predisposition to baldness on either side of my parents families.. furthermore my hair looked fine earlier this year. However I've been traveling on my own for 5 months, recently had my wallet stolen, lack of money and I'm seeing a girl here in Europe that's not quite serious but at the same time we're into each other; emotions are all over the place, issues of how to make it work, living here, work, money all coming to the surface.

Could this be stress related? I'm in a tight situation right now where I could be on the streets in a week unless my replacement card arrives soon.. eating and sleep has been somewhat minimal; this seems like it could be the cause but naturally I'm a bit freaked out as im only 23 and my hair looks like its falling out..

It could may well be due to stress.

Stress can cause havoc on us in many ways, I hope that you will take more care of yourself from now on. I think that hair loss can also be caused by numerous medical conditions, How do you feel in yourself? if you are noticing any other worrying symptoms i suggest maybe visiting a dr.

Yeah I suppose it really could be anything; if this gets worse I will be seeing a doctor.. in the meantime I'm not sure if I can cut back on he stress given the circumstances but ill try take it easier and see if i notice a difference.

Thank you for the replys.

HL has a thread along the same lines that may give you some advice on how to prevent further loss. The biggest thing to pass along is to try and not stress, as tough as that is. :-/

Stress can cause you to lose hair, yeah. Stress is a survival response. Your body will pull resources from unnecessary areas like hair and put them into your internal organs to make your survival chances better.

Male pattern baldness is due to the hair follicles in some men being more sensitive to testosterone, which is determined genetically. Similarly, some people have a sensitivity to their own body's cortisol that is released under stressful conditions. Stress related baldness will look more patchy with thin spots appearing seemingly at random, whereas pattern baldness follows the predictable male patterns.

Once the stressful situation is behind you, start taking a B complex or just brewer's yeast extract. The key B vitamin is B12, but your body doesn't fully utilize B vitamins in supplement form unless you take them all at the same time. It's different if the B vitamin is from a food source, for some reason. Brewer's yeast extract is one of the best sources of B12. Anyway, that should help your hair to grow back.

Male pattern baldness is mostly due to excessive dihydrotestosterone. There's not much you can do about it. If you were to take a drug that would prevent dihydrotestosterone from forming (propecia), you're going to run the risk of fucking up a lot of things, including your ability to have an erection, have orgasms, etc.

All in all, hair is not all that important. Don't worry about it.

Thinned. Not bald - use rosemary and garlic infused oil to stop the thinning (symptoms), and get enough sleep, eat well, and breathe and take time outs when you need them (naps even) (causes).
