Quetiapine, (aka seroquel) Is it soluble in water?

Hi

I am prescribed quetiapine and I take the 25mg pills.
I want to come off it, but I want to do a slow taper, which would involve somehow dividing up those 25mg pills.
I am in the uk and we don't have compounding pharmacies so I looked into the possibility of dissolving it in water.

I am not scientifically experienceded, and drew a blank when I tried to google this information.
I read a thread on here http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/threads/558310-Seroquel-(Quetiapine)-solubility and it said this - water solubility 4.03e-02 g/l but I don't understand that.

Please could someone tell me if quetiapine is soluble in water.

It seems to be only moderately soluble in water which means that you will waste some.

I would say get a one sided razor blade (you can pick these up at any hardware store) or a pill splitter and half them. 25mg's is not a high dose at all so you should be alright anyway.

I'm on 150mg a day. I take six twenty five mg tablets.
I want to cut by 15mg.
Thanks for the razor blade thing but I want a more accurate cut.

What does moderately soluble in water mean please?

It means that the solubility is 40.3 mg/L (at some temperature, probably around 20c) which is quite low. Sure you can dose it this way but you'll need a lot of water. But necessarily it doesn't have to be completely in water solution but you can get the particles in random order by shaking the container before dosing. Not as accurate but works still.

Thanks for explaining that. It looks like I would need nearly 4 litres to dissolve 150mg, I can't drink all the much water so I think I will just dissolve it in 50ml or 100ml

Just remember to break the pills into a fine powder. This way you get roughly constant concentration RIGHT AFTER you have shaken it. If it is in solution the concentration would be automatically even.

Thanks - I really appreciate that tip about crushing the pill into powder before dissolving it. I think it will be easy because I was going to measure out a set amount of water and just take out the amount I dont need and drink the rest, so the water will only need to be relatively evenly distributed with quetiapine while I take out the little bit I dont need with a syringe.
