North Texas police: Arrested teacher used meth before classes

SPRINGTOWN, Texas (AP) — Police say they have arrested a North Texas teacher after she admitted to authorities that she had been using methamphetamine in the mornings before class for about seven years.

Vickie Bruce has been charged with possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone. She is free on a $25,000 bond.

According to an arrest affidavit, Bruce said she used meth "before going to work for the last seven years 'off and on.'"

Dallas television station KDFW reports (http://bit.ly/RqKgSy) Bruce was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. She teaches at an elementary school in Springtown, located about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

Jail records did not show an attorney for Bruce.

North Texas 4th-grader on award-winning teacher busted for meth: 'She said don’t do drugs — it’s bad for your system'

SPRINGTOWN — A North Texas teacher was arrested this week after she admitted to authorities that she had been using methamphetamine in the mornings before class for about seven years, police said.

Vickie Bruce, 46, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone. She is free on a $25,000 bond.

Jail records did not list an attorney for Bruce. She is a third-grade teacher at an elementary school in Springtown, about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

According to an arrest affidavit, Bruce told Texas Rangers she used meth “before going to work for the last seven years on and off.”

When detectives first questioned her, she had the drugs in her car, which was in the school’s parking lot, according the affidavit. She was arrested on Wednesday.

Dallas television station KDFW reported that Bruce was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Investigators allege she kept meth wrapped in tin foil in a photo album in her purse.

Fourth-grader Nolan McGrath told the TV station he remembers Bruce once giving a “stay clean” speech.

“We had a no-drug poster,” he said. “She said don’t do drugs. It’s bad for your system and if you do you’ll get caught.”

Said Patrick McGrath, Nolan’s father, “To have a teacher that you trust with your kids to be doing any kind of drugs when they’re supposed to be teaching you not to do drugs in school, it’s real shocking.”

Officials with the Springtown school district said Bruce has been a teacher there for at least 10 years and has received awards from the PTA and fellow teachers.

School district officials said they are cooperating with investigators.

The district made headlines earlier this week when its school board voted to let administrators paddle students of the opposite sex.

Parents had complained after two teenage girls at the local high school were paddled by male assistant principals. The school district voted to change its policy, citing a lack of female administrators to carry out spankings.

The students are probably on amphetamines too. A bit hypocritical.

That schools sounds like it sucks. Paddling students, WTF.8(

We all know how well no-drug posters and telling people not to do drugs work as a drug prevention strategy

What the fuck!? I didn't know they paddled students in the States.

Yeah they do, in parts of the South and I guess parts of Texas.

The fact she was on crystal isn't that surprising. I know of teachers who would drink before class or go out with their fellow co-workers and get drunk/buzzed at a restaurant.

If she managed to keep it up for 7 years I doubt she was getting properly tweaked out before each class, sounds more like she was taking a small amount to help her stay more energetic.

You're probably right. And probably half her students are also on amphetamines during class too. And while this teacher didn't, there are thousands of people legally using prescribed meth (Desoxyn) on a daily basis to get through the day. If this teacher was really using it to get through the day as opposed to getting high, she probably could have legally gotten a script that would have done the same thing. As long as she wasn't impaired doing her job, it's kinda sad.

yep, paddling is actually fairly common in small texas town schools. i never heard of it where i am but i went to college for freshman year out n stephenville n atleast half the kids that went there were from towns smaller then stephenville, n so many people i met had stories bout being paddled n i was thinkin damn thats crazy, one of my buddies said he got paddled all the way thru senior year of HS and he would talk dirty to the principal as it happened to piss him off

i live in texas and had a hard time believing people still got paddled

but yea it sucks for the lady cuz it sounds like she was prob a decent teacher, wonder why she told on herself to authorities tho

If she kept her job for 7 years while using, it's obvious she had self control not the abuse it.

But I don't know her full story. She should have just gotten a script.

award-winning teacher busted for meth
I don't know what award she won, but she must have been doing her job, and apparently quite well.
Maybe - just maybe - the problem is with the laws, not the fact that she was using meth?

Said Patrick McGrath, Nolan’s father, “To have a teacher that you trust with your kids to be doing any kind of drugs when they’re supposed to be teaching you not to do drugs in school, it’s real shocking.”
Any kind of drugs? Tobacco? Alcohol? Coffee? Would those be "real shocking" too, Patrick?
And are they supposed to "be teaching you not to do drugs"? That is not drug education at all, but a political/social viewpoint. What about if they were there to teach drug education, instead, based on science, not just a certain political viewpoint?

So, they paddle their students, because it is permitted based on the law.
They lost a teacher who was doing a great job because she wasn't following the law. She wasn't hurting anyone except herself, and she was using the energy she got from meth to teach her classes - which requires tons of energy, let me add.

Anything funny here?

I had a teacher with a script to adderall... she was probably one of my favorite teachers to be honest. Always bouncing her leg or tapping her pencil in class... I can tell!!

She always went through powerpoints and shit quick as hell but I could always keep up, so it wasn't a problem for me. The best part was that she always had everything graded by the next few days and the room was clean as hell LOL

"If I go too fast today slow me down, I've had too much ..coffee."

Joking aside though, Corporal punishment in schools, in 2012? How fucking backwards can you get? If that were me, I can guarantee the paddle would end up in some unpleasant place belonging to the teacher, most likely requiring surgical extraction.

if this was about an athlete on steroids, everyone here would be calling them a cheater. Why does this teacher not get the same judgment?

It's not just in the South. I went to school in Miami and plenty of people got paddled.

im sorry since when did florida become not the south

i understand its shocking it'd wpuld happen in miami cuz even tho it happens in tx i have never heard of a dfw school doing this but miami is most certainly southern

Culturally, Miami (and the Keys) is not the South. We're pretty proud of that.

well culture is often times rooted in the past

and as 'progressive' as you might fancy yourself you are most certainly still in the south, both geographically and possibly ideologically if you're still paddling students there, its a pretty old school (and mostly southern, as demonstrated by the map on your wiki link) mindset if you ask me
