Aus - Mother admits killing 5yo son with methadone

Its fucked up but i hear about this kind of stuff quite a bit. parents want to quiet their crying kids so they put a sedative in their bottle.

btw what is a cordial? i was under the impression that its a type of alcoholic drink? like a cherry cordial?

I can almost understand if it's a newborn going through PAWs, but a 5 year old, WTF?

Isn't codeine OTC in Australia? Why not use that for a cold? I think Australia also has some kind of national health care, surely she could have taken the kid to a doctor. Could she have gotten the cough syrup mixed up with the methadone? Or is she just a dumbass?

Yeah I think this mother was maybe too lazy to take her boy to hospital and figured a bit of methadone would quiet him down for the night. I don't like to make assumptions but what she did was so wreckless. I mean, come on she had to have some awareness that it could endanger her child. I was prescribed low dose methadone years ago. The bottles have warning stickers top to fucking bottom. I'm having a hard time sympathising with this woman.

Cordial isn't alcoholic, it is a sugar based flavour syrup that you mix down with water, like kool aid base? It comes in all the popular flavours, green (lime) red (raspberry) orange etc etc.

Methadone mum, i know im a new member i actually came across this thread while looking for Sentencing Submissions that were due to be given to courts yesterday for this case, i knew this woman, and knew her was something i did not wish i ever did

What was she thinking? i doubt she ever knew that, this was also not the 1st time she had given the little boy methadone, i knew her when she was about 22 i was 18, met her through mutual friends, wish i never had, my life turned into a living hell, not just mine tho, my sons life too

Ask away i will tell you what i know... lets just say personally i hope she spends enough time in prison that she can never harm another child again, and that she gets out when her breeding days are Over!

This is also my real name and my email address is legit, i have nothing to hide, and definitely not from her or anyone else

As far as im aware i havent broken any forum rules in posting

Thanks Nikkie, I would pm you but your post count isn't over 50 yet. So did you used to get high with this lady?
I'm assuming she's hardcore addicted to give a little kid dope like that so carelessly. Was she using other drugs as well?

Actually no, Ive never touched drugs myself, Have been married to an alcho and seen the effects of drugs/addictions of people close to me, im no expert tho,

She had been an on and off user from about 18, she had 5 kids, to 3 partners, the little boys dad had died the year before from a heart condition ( he was an ex addict too), they may have thought the little boy had the same heart condition once autopsy was done, but that doesnt change the fact she gave him methadone

That's so sad. I hope her other children have relatives to stay with. This reminds me of a documentary, "Dr G. Medical Examiner" They were stumped as to why a ten year boy suddenly died. After the autopsy, still found nothing until the toxicology report came back. The boy had ADHD and mistakenly, the pharmacy gave him methadone instead of whatever he was meant to get. It built up in his system and within weeks he had passed away.

This makes me believe "methadone mum" may have given the child the drug more than one time.

her eldest has nothing to do with her, her parents had custody of her from about age 8, her 3 other children the elder 1 had had a baby just 2days prior to the incident, she had hidden the pregnancy while living at home.. so the 3 kids dad was called up after not seeing any of them for 10yrs to take charge, the 2 boys ended up on and off in juvenile detention, (no different while they were with her, they were known to welfare and police)1 has pulled his head in other is still off rails... but who can blame the kids, look what they had to live with, this was normal behavior to them ?

As to your last comment, yes, the boys had said this was not the 1st time she had given the little boy methadone... makes me wonder if she did it to the other kids too ?

Thanks for posting, let us know if you hear anything more about the case, like the sentence, i'll keep an eye open as well and post back if I see anything more on it.

They showed a video just before on the news here of the house these kids were living in, i will try and see if i can get a link and post it

Thanks for sharing the link. That's horrible living conditions. Imagine the smell. No that put me off my dinner, oh man

This makes little sense. It's a very super rare thing that a pharmacy would switch up medications like that, especially one shcedule II drug for another schedule II drug. Also, he would actually have a tolerance to the medication from taking it over time - he'd be most susceptible to overdose from the first few times taking it. I'll have to lookup this show.

I'll also have to have a look about on the internet to see if I can buy any of this cordial stuff in the US. Might be tasty to mix with seltzer water.

It's true. The family sued and that pharmacist lost his licensure and business. Dr G wouldn't make this up, very sad

He didn't switch it up, the script was misread. A simple but tragic mistake.

Mum treated kids with methadone before, court told

A mother who killed her five-year-old son with a lethal dose of methadone had previously given the boy the drug when he was suffering from swine flu, a court has been told.

Lisa Ann Collard, 45, put methadone in her son Kristopher's bottle of cordial at her Modbury Heights home in Adelaide in June last year in an attempt to treat the boy's flu symptoms.

The Supreme Court was told a pathologist's report revealed the boy was actually suffering from pneumonia.

Collard pleaded guilty to manslaughter and administering a prescription drug without lawful excuse.

Her lawyer, Andrew English, said the case was a tragic, confronting and unusual case of manslaughter.

"There is not the slightest question in Ms Collard's conduct in administering the methadone that she held any ill-will towards Kristopher," he said.

"She loved her little boy and she made a catastrophic error of judgment.

"She was well aware that she was not permitted to administer it to any other person and it was illegal to do so.

"She knew it was a very dangerous substance and she should not have been giving it to her little boy for pain relief."

Mr English admitted the family lived in squalor and concerns were raised by Families SA.

"There are many deficiencies in Ms Collard's parenting skills. Notwithstanding the dysfunction, the children and their mother had very worthwhile and loving relationships," he told the court.

"For all her deficiencies, she is fundamentally a good person and a caring mother.

"Unfortunately Ms Collard became complacent and overconfident in her use of methadone and tragically she made the error of judgment to administer it to Kristopher in the misguided idea that it would relieve his symptoms."

Anguish

Mr English said it was within the court's power to impose a suspended sentence or a low non-parole term.

"There is really no sanction that this court can impose that measures up to the anguish she's experienced after the loss of her young son," the court heard.

"Ms Collard loved Kristopher and the last thing she wanted to do was to cause him harm.

"Ms Collard understands the situation and she's going to be paying for it for the rest of her life."

Prosecutor Lucy Boord told the court the offending was serious when taken in the context of Collard's past treatment of her children.

She said there was no record of Collard ever having taken her five children to see a doctor for medical treatment, but she had treated them with methadone at least twice when they were unwell.

"When we're looking at a standard of care that's expected of a parent, this is grossly negligent. This was how she treated her children medically," Ms Boord said.

"It is a very serious offence, it's had dire consequences, and your Honour's sentence needs to reflect that. There's been a loss of a very young, vulnerable life.

"The courts must be seen to protect children when they are vulnerable, so in all the circumstances an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate."

Three of Collard's children prepared a joint statement in which they told the court they missed their mother and wanted her released from prison.

Collard's daughter, Tamara Norville, said she wanted her mother to come and live with her and her two brothers as soon as possible.

"Kristopher was a very smart little kid. We miss him a lot," the statement said.

"We all miss mum... we feel like we've been left with no parents.

"I feel like mum tried to help Kristopher and would never have tried to hurt him. We miss you mum and we love you."

Mr English said he intended challenging the prosecution notion that Collard never took her children to a doctor.

The matter returns to court next week.
