Just because people take drugs doesn't necessarily mean they admire violent behaviour, or indeed see something honorable in the 'old school' criminal code.
I say that as somebody who reads books and watches documentaries about these things, so I can totally understand the fascination. I can also understand the sense of admiration for old-time gangsters - they were often (and still are in some cases) at the centre of their communities, resolving disputes in benign fashion, keeping an eye on ol' Doris, et-cetera.
Still, at the end of the day they're mostly (at least the high-profile cases) psychopaths and / or sadists.
While they're often fascinating because of this and other aspects of their respective characters, it's difficult for many people to harbour any kind of unbridled admiration for them, and it can seem a bit strange that they're afforded such disproportionate levels of respect for what usually amounted to pursuit of personal gains and nothing more.
do I get a prize for using "sublimated"? I think I deserve one.)
I reckon most of the admiration is sublimated fear. (do I get a prize for using "sublimated"? I think I deserve one.)
They did kick the shit out of screws though. Kudos for that. And I think that's where most people's 'admiration' is coming from.
I don't know, perhaps ACAB, but they are people doing a job, it's the job that needs to go (or be changed). Kicking them in isn't going to create a more humane society, possibly the reverse, unless we're actually having the revolution.
Just a bunch of thugs that happened to have some manners and dress sharp.
Unlike today's badlads, they didn't engage in underage sex or grannybashing and few innocents were caught in their crossfire.
The Turks and north londoners are among the few still doing things properly.
