I don't understand how everyone in SE Asia isn't in some prison. Drug use seems to be pretty common, and their sentencing is ridiculous. I read a story in a Bangkok newspaper a few years back that said that 21,000 people were arrested during one weekend drug sweep.

Hrm, this Aussie teen got caught there last yr with a bit more and didnt get any jail time...

Australian teenager arrested in Bali for marijuana 06/10/2011

A 14-year-old boy from the NSW central coast has been arrested in Bali for possession of Marijuana and faces a possible six-year jail sentence.

Transcript
TONY JONES, PRESENTER: The Australian government says it aims to negotiate the early return of a teenage boy from the NSW central coast who was arrested in Bali two days ago for possession of marijuana.

The 14-year-old was holidaying with his parents when he was arrested in Kuta after allegedly purchasing 6.9 grams of marijuana.

He's currently being held in the main police headquarters in the capital Denpasar.

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd says the priority is to get him home.

From what I recall he just got sent home to Aus on a good behaviour bond or something.

Hopefully it turns out ok for the Japanese teen.

I know if he was American, dude woulda been better off sticking with somethin like rape or assault on a police officer.. you know, crimes that carry a lighter sentence.

I bet the amount of corruption and shear quantity of drugs allows many to slip through legal fingers.

Bali prosecutors seek prison for Japanese teen

Indonesian prosecutors on Monday sought a one year prison term for a Japanese teenager charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana on the resort island of Bali.

The 17-year-old, a student at an international high school on the island, was arrested in August after police found 2.61 grams of the drug in his trouser pocket.

"The defendant has been proven guilty of drug abuse...we demanded the judges to sentence him to one year jail," prosecutor Wayan Widana said following a closed-door trial at the Denpasar district court.

"The defendant was a minor, and being polite during the trial, admitted his mistake and promised not to repeat it", he said.

The teen was charged with drug possession last month, which carries a sentence of up to 12 years in prison, and drug abuse, which carries up to four years in jail.

The boy's lawyer Ahmad Hadiana expressed regret that the prosecutors did not recommend the judges return the defendant to his parents despite him being a minor.

"We object to the prosecutors' recommendation which neglected the fact that he is a minor and must be returned to his parents," he told reporters.

An Indonesian court last November sentenced a 14-year-old Australian boy to two months in jail in Bali for marijuana possession, after intense lobbying for his release, namely by the then Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd.

Indonesia enforces stiff penalties including life imprisonment and death for drug trafficking.

Two members of an Australian drug smuggling gang known as the "Bali Nine", who were arrested in 2005, are on death row, while seven others face lengthy jail terms.

Another Australian, Schapelle Corby, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for smuggling 4.1 kilos of marijuana in 2005, recently had her term slashed by five years after a clemency appeal to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

A majority of these countries with really fucked up drug laws were allot more liberal with their policies until the US stuck their nose in every one else's business.

Indonesia jails Japanese teen for drug use

AN Indonesian court has sentenced a Japanese teenager to six months in jail after he was caught with a small amount of marijuana on the resort island of Bali.

The 17-year-old, a student at an international high school on the island, was arrested in August after police found 2.61 grams of the drug in his pocket.

"The defendant has been found convincingly and legitimately guilty of abusing narcotics for his personal use," Judge Gunawan Tri Budiono of Denpasar district court said as he handed out the jail term.

The teen's lawyer successfully argued that an initial one-year sentence sought by prosecutors was too harsh, given the boy's age.

The judge and counsel on both sides wore Indonesia's traditional Batik shirt during the hearing instead of court robes to make proceedings less intimidating for the minor.

Indonesia takes a hard line on drugs with trafficking punishable with life imprisonment or even execution.

Drug possession carries up to 12 years in jail, while use of even small amounts of narcotics can result in a four-year prison term.

Foreigners populate Bali's main jail, many having fallen foul of strict drug laws that are enforced on the party island.

Man that is so fucked up... A 12 year stretch for 2.61 grams??? Man im so happy and proud to be a Canadian. I would not want to live or travel to any of this 3rd world shit holes.

^ Actually, there is amazingly rich culture that exists in these "3rd world shit holes", as you put it.
Indonesia, Thailand, and the rest of SE Asia are amazing places.
Are you scared of the poor people there?
Are you scared that the police will put you in jail even if you don't have drugs? It is very unlikely.
While the drug laws are really fucked, there is a lot one can learn and gain by visiting.
Especially someone who talks like you do :\
The foods, the art, the music, the languages, the histories are fascinating and deserving of study.
And, most of the world is poor, so it might do you some good to be exposed to poverty.
Just don't use drugs when you are there.

Also, if you read the post above yours, he was sentenced to 6 months, not 12 years.
Still ridiculous and disgusting, but only 5% of what he could have faced.

Lock him up and throw away the key....
2.6gs... he's almost got enough to start a large scale dealing operation....
*sigh*

6 months... 12yrs... both stupid sentances.

Yeah its shame they jailed him, but that's the laws there. The Aussie 14 yr old who got caught purchasing 6.9g's of pot got let off (article posted further up in this thread).

The 12 yr's part is the maximum they give there for drug possession it says-

Drug possession carries up to 12 years in jail, while use of even small amounts of narcotics can result in a four-year prison term.

Yeah it's a pretty beautiful place, the beaches have such warm water, the food/fruit is so tropical and you can live and eat pretty cheaply. Awesome forests and nice people, I wouldn't call it a shithole. I think I read a million aussies go there every yr now, more than anytime in the past. I've been a few times ages ago. Got offered hash and cocaine which I wasnt interested in, cos of the laws, but i had magic mushroom milkshakes, which were legal and sold in bars, they were really strong. I tripped hard.

Poor? What is poor, some of those SEA shitholes have the highest GDP per capita globally. Doesn't make it any less of a shithole to be under the rule of sadists who have perverted the Confucian values pervasive in Asian societies to the extreme and use governance as an excuse to slay people who don't fit into their societal roles as they are expected to by the powers that be.

OT: Coming to the defense of my Canadian brother I would like to point out that SEA people comprise the majority of the immigrants living in Toronto. We're not ignorant of Asian culture, we have the highest density of it outside of Asia. Can smoke weed without being tossed in prison and get Asian culture. Best of both worlds!
