Opioids OxyContin substitute

My doctor recently switched me from ms contin to OxyContin 40 mg twice a day. I take oxycodine 30 mg for break thru pain. The OC's do seem to control my pain better but they are so expensive. I get the best relief from the IR oxy 30's. What would be a good alternate that is similar to the oxycodone 30's I take?
 
Opana IR, but i think they're expensive (and maybe difficult to find..). It's twice as strong as oxycodone, you'll find a lot of info here in BL, oxymorphone is the name of substance..and of course, welcome to BL, i hope you'll enjoy it..:)

If you have insurance you can call them and check prices of the medication. I do this when my dr wants to try me on different meds. If its not covered they can tell you what the substitution is.

Your doctor will likely want you to be on an ER med since you already have the 30mg oxycodone IR for breakthrough pain, so I don't see Opana IR being an option. The MSContin/oxycodone IR is a very popular combo for chronic pain. Options for an ER pain main are Opana ER (though it will likely be expensive since there is not a generic for it yet), the extended release version of hydromorphone, methadone, or fentanyl patches (more of a last resort IMO).

I am on fentanyl patches as my long acting medication (changed every 2 days)and and oxycodone ir for b.t pain.
Although the patches give me really good pain coverage, they have totally ruined my tolerance.... I agree that they should be a last resort. I sort of wish my doctor had tried me on a different long acting medication like Opana ER or Oxycontin before putting me on the patch, as I have no room to move up :(
