I have pretty bad anxiety, which prevents me from doing everyday things, do you think the doctor would prescribe it to me?

What does it matter what we think since we're not your doctor? Me saying yes wouldn't make the script get written.

He most probably won't. He'll most likely either suggest an anti-depressant or put you on 0.5mg Ativan.

But I'm not depressed, and I even get anxious and sort of panicky when I'm driving

You don't need to exhibit every symptom that a drug treats in order for it to work for you. SSRI's are prescribed for both depression and anxiety, so just because you are not depressed doesn't mean that it shouldn't be a treatment option.

Well do anti-depressants work for anxiety?

How effective are they for anxiety?

im prescribed on both xanax and valium. xanax is good if u suffer from panic attacks. however , your saying you suffer from anxiety which your doc will prob prescribe you valium and an anti depressent. the valium will help in the short term for your anxiety until your anti depressent (which helps with anxiety) starts to work (3-4 weeks)

also its not a matter of what anti depressant works, its moreso which one works for you. ive been on several (im actually on day 2 of one I forget the name of) as I was on effexor and it made me worse. it comes down to what works for you.....see your doc

Zoloft and Cipralex work VERY well for anxiety but you have to take them every single day and they take two weeks to start to work.

People react differently to all medications, but here is one study about one particular SSRI used to treat anxiety.

Sertraline was first developed and approved for the treatment of depression. However, considerable research has been conducted on its use in anxiety disorders. This paper reviews the data emerging from controlled and open trials of the use of sertraline in anxiety disorders. Sertraline has been tested extensively in the treatment of panic and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Less extensive testing has been completed on social phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder. The reviewed studies show that sertraline is an effective and well-tolerated treatment of all of these disorders. A comparison of sertraline with other pharmacotherapeutic options shows it to be at least equivalent to other medications for anxiety disorders (source).

Yes, Zoloft. I personally think it's the best for anxiety.

Well what does one have to have to get prescribed Xanax? I heard from multiple sources that it works like a charm and that's what I need.

i've tried zoloft, cipralex and welbutrin; all useless for anxiety, in fact they worsened it and gave me side effects. Antidepressants are hardly effective compared to placebo for depression, let alone for anxiety. I think it is a big sham that doctors push SSRIs for anxiety at all as they cause anxiety for many people even after they start working. But if it works for someone then that's fine with me.

You really should only use benzos if you are having a panic attack, try everything else first, like exercise, eating better, proper sleep, environmental changes, therapy and laying off caffeine. If you feel like you are going to end up in a psych ward then consider going on benzos. Once you go down that route it is extremely difficult to go back.

^xanax is for panic attacks, not great for general anxiety. I highly doubt you need xanax and it's not something to take lightly. It can either be a valuable tool or it can ruin your life and your mental health for a very long time.

You seem to be too focused on the drug. Instead of asking what one has to have to get prescribed xanax, shouldn't you be asking what one should take to treat your symptoms?

Do you have any sources to support that statement? The study that I provided in my previous post stated otherwise. I think that they are effective for a number of people, but there are certainly a lot of people that they don't work for either. It's hard to get an accurate gauge for their efficiency by reading online forums since people that it worked for probably aren't thinking to go online and post about it.

Agreed.

In Holland benzo's are discouraged as they are highly addictive and there for put strain on the insurance system. You can keep taking them needing more and more without solving the origin of the anxiety. From manufacturer's standpoint it's the ideal med, a cashcow generating continues income. But this is a Calvinistic country so enduring anxiety is much more preferred. See diff between US and Holland regarding wisdom teeth removal or rootcanals: US Hydrocodone or other strong pain med, Holland Ibuprofen.

My personal experience with Mirtazapine combined with Pregabalin was quite good, my dr suggested an SSRI. But when I read the insert about the side effects and chance for alarming effects in the first 2 weeks of use, suicide or killing your family. I went back to him with my own suggestion for the Mirtazapine later combining it with Pregabalin. Although I suffered stress and mild depression at that time it killed any anxiety pretty well.

Have you tried herbals like Ashwhaganda, gave me superior effects better then mirtazapine combined with pregabalin as there were no side effects. Except getting pee smelling like horse's ass. Seriously talk to your dr but don't rule out your natural healing system supported with some supplements like Ashwhaganda (whitania Somniferum) ao's like Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) and Tulsi (Ocimum Basilicum) or whatever works for you.
