THE Record's Annie Brown gives her views on why the public are just as guilty for society's methadone ills.

THE Government have ordered an audit into the £36million methadone cover-up. Three decades of of deaths and long-term addiction and now we are finally to be told the truth about the impact of methadone on Scotland. Out of 584 drug deaths in Scotland last year, a saddening 274 were linked to methadone. A legally dispensed drug killed hundreds of Scots, yet where was the outcry, where was the public anger?

Why did the Government not do an audit decades ago?

Millions was spent on dishing out a drug to thousands of Scots – and there was no real national record of what was being taken, the dosage, the deaths and whether it had any impact on addiction. Successive governments knew that when they poked at the nasty little methadone problem, the stench would be overwhelming. This is a story of short-termism, apathy and concealing the truth of what has been a strategic blunder. In every war there are profiteers, and the war against addiction is no different.

Chemists, doctors and drug companies got fat as the addicts got skinny.

And the reason it happened was because we didn’t care.

Heroin addicts aren’t people, they are junkies. Junkies nick our car stereo or pester us for cash. They are unsightly, unkempt. They have rotten teeth, bad skin and they would hawk themselves for a tenner bag. They are spongers and wasters and we recoil when we see them queueing in our local chemist for their little green fix.

Yet, I remember 15 years ago interviewing a senior police officer whose daughter was a heroin addict. I watched this big, broken man weep as he admitted he wished his daughter dead, rather than have her sell herself for drugs at the local docks.

one thing i can say is methadone mixed with benzos is what kills people.more people than anything else in the drug scene, over here anyway.

God she's so full of shit!:X If there was no methadone available it'd be a thousand junkies dead from street drugs instead of 274 from methadone probably mixed with other shit. Never mind the crime, burden on public health system from infections, poverty and other problems from addiction to street drugs.

Britain used to have diamorphine and cocaine maintenance therapy. Now they're talking about banning methadone and leaving addicts with nowhere to turn. Death and prison don't deter addicts, how is kicking them off methadone going to turn them into good sober Christians? Is the idea that every dead druggie=free anti-drug commercial.

God those Tories seem like Republican-lite. And that Russel Brand was dumb enough to go along with this fuck everyone else agenda of the right. I could see why we tar-and-feathered or lynched them during the American Revolutionary War.

Two obvious points.

1) Diamorphine maintenance would solve this problem. Not going to happen because they right wing media in the UK is far too influential, but this would be the easiest and most logical way to approach the problem.

2) From what I've heard about the UK system, it seems like there's very little followup treatment. They just park addicts on maintenance and expect it to somehow 'cure' them, which is absurd. Maintenance isn't a cure, it's a tool to allow the user to make changes in their life and reach a position where they can, if they feel ready, slowly taper off the drugs, instead of forcing them to go cold turkey and then expecting them to somehow turn their life around while feeling miserable with PAWS. But it sounds like they either don't have the funding or can't be bothered to help these addicts change their lives after going into maintenance, so they stay stuck in their old lifestyle and eventually get bored and start using heroin on top of their methadone, or selling the methadone for heroin.

This is a perfect example of the (many times, lifelong) influence the media (and propaganda) can have on us (or at least those of us who do not know better).

And it's pretty pathetic that it has been this way for upwards of 4 centuries, ever since the first newspaper was reportedly published in 1605.

That being said, I am not suggesting that there should be a public outcry due to the fact that methadone is legal and/or used as a opiate dependency maintenance drug. I myself have been on MMT for nearly 3 years now and - although it wouldn't have been my first choice for use in this manner - I do feel it saved whatever pitiful life I had left.
