What I've been doing is just waiting until 5/6pm to eat and then having a normal dinner, seems to fill me up easily enough and I don't feel the need to eat again where as if I eat in the morning not long after getting up I'm stuffing my face every couple of hours.

Yeah, i'm trying to keep up the cals a little bit to build and retain a decent amount of muscle so that they keep increasing while the fat burns, it's a good balance. I know what you mean about breakfast, once you start that is pretty much it. I keep talking to failing dieters who lecture me quoting studies about how people who skip breakfast are more likely to be fat, when it's quite clear that that correlation proves shit. I got used to not having breakfast really quickly considering I was programmed to eat it since birth. As long as you don't use breaking your fast as an excuse to be a total pig it is definitely the way forward.

I haven't enjoyed breakfast for years, I just don't feel like eating in the morning, so would rather skip it in and eat later in the day than force it. Soon as it's eaten the metabolism kicks in and the hunger is far too frequent. The only issue with the fasting is that it gets to a point where the hunger eventually comes but I ignore it because I want to wait until dinner time, then that hunger passes and I end up loosing my appetite. I can eat dinner but I don't have any appetite for it.

So it's kind of catch 22 but it means eating less through out a day which can be both a good or a bad thing depending on your weight.

I don't know Dan, I've never been into all this fitness science milarky but last year I tried a few days of Ramadan with a work colleague, he was a very devout Muslim and since we were working on something together during Ramadan I thought I'd join in.

I found it quite easy TBH even on a day when we were out of the office on site somewhere and on the go all day, not sure about keeping it going for that long though I only did it for 4 days.

I'm going to have to actually venture into a gym though as I've got to build the muscle up again on my battered leg, fortunately we have a really good free one at work:)

Ramadan seems slightly different to me, although I guess it does prove how doable limited fasting is. Did you go the whole hog and not even have water atm23?

Ramadan is fucking ludicrous, when i was working in Turkey Ramadan was fallling in July time, daytime temps regularly into the 40's...and the set times of fasting (sunrise to sunset) made it very difficult for people...trying to teach people at 7 in the evening, after they've spent a whole day at work, no food, no water, not even swallowing their own saliva (rank loads of gobbing in the streets).......yeah, people's attention spans weren't the best, and the smokers waiting for their nicotine fix too :(

I didn't know they weren't even allowed to swallow their own spit? That's ridiculous! I don't particularly understand what shifting your eating times proves in terms of devotion, given that a lot of the Muslims I know end up just living at night during Ramadan. It's a bit dickish (obviously because it's me), but whenever I speak to Muslims who are fasting I always ask them what they'd do if they lived near the North Pole :D I was walking through the Muslim area of Birmingham after I got a flight back there and had 5 hours to kill and wanted to find some shisha stuff, and some guy led me around trying to find some but everywhere was closed. He totally forgot about Ramadan and sparked a fag up, and while he was walking along some people close to his family saw him and he remembered at that exact second, and he had this look on his face like he was so fucked.

This is at the more extreme end of the spectrum. I had a number of Iranian students when I was teaching in Coventry who took it this far. I honestly felt like telling them to fuck their studies off for the month, was hardly worth them being there.

I think there's some disagreement on it.

Looks like the people spitting are spitting after rinsing their mouths, or for fear that their mouth might have picked up some dust/insect/airborne particles, which shouldn't be swallowed, your own saliva would be acceptable, as long as it contained no extraneous contaminants. Must be a fucking minefield for them.

We need Cristiano Ronaldo to summarise for us, unfortunately his name is not appropriate... :(

Yeah it's fucked up, as it moves 10 days back and 10 days back again etc., it's going to end up landing slap bang on GCSEs and a-levels pretty soon. Apparently the UK summer is one of the worst places Muslims find themselves doing Ramadan, because the days are so long here even compared to the middle east. I feel most sorry for the ones who continue to operate fast food shops all day. On the plus side Nandos is always extremely empty at that time of year.

Yep, I didn't drink either, he was a really good bloke and it just seemed like an opportunity to try it out TBH I didn't find that much of a big deal, like you say it's not really fasting given you can eat before sunrise and in the evening.

I learnt quite a lot about Islam from him, he was fairly devout but very open about his beliefs and the various practices, he even went to a farm to slaughter his own meat because he didn't consider the meat he could get as properly halal.

Eating insects: Out. Eating spit: In.
Kneeling to pray to the South East: In. Kneeling to Pray to the North West: Out.

Wow, that seems like taking it really far! Up here a lot of Muslims won't eat in the Halal KFC because the animals were stunned first.

According to him the animals from the commercial halal butchers in our area came from a slaughter house where they were slaughtered by a non-Muslim and the prayer was just on a constant audio loop being played in the aboveground, he didn't mention if they were stunned or not.

It does seem that for some Ramadan just results in late night binging, but not for all and certainly not for this guy, he was quite pragmatic about such things but still I can't really see any of it as anything other then dogma...however I digress let's not clutter up the fitness thread;)

I was reading an article on BBC News last week about a group of muslims refugees who have been taken in by Finland and it was talking about how they observe ramadan when there are months on non stop daylight during the summer there. Apparently they do it based on the time at Mecca instead or the hours of ramadam from their home country, depends on the individual.

Yeah I had a search about to answer the question, but I like asking Muslims because on the face of it the question totally stumps them because the Quaran gives no clues to the would be Muslim inuit. The different answers I get are interesting. Some manage to come to the conclusion you say, others say that they would leave Ramadan to a different time of year, some say "that's stupid, no Muslims live up there", some say that they would essentially be bound to not let anything pass their lips for as long as the sun didn't go down but that they would have the added benefit of being able to eat non-stop during the dark phases.

Given that this is the fitness thread i'll give a quick update on my progress. I'm now upto about 85kgx7 reps, then 80 x 8, then 80 x 8, then 70 x 12, on the bench press. My dumbbell presses have gone up about 25kg in each arm. My dead lifts, if I had the weight, would probably be up around 150kg now, but instead are at 110kg but with many more reps than I should really be doing. I have gone so far over the weight limit on my lat pull down machine that I can't add any more weight, I think it's topped out at 90-100kg x 10 x 3 sets. My 21s are upto 35kg x 3 sets. So it's all coming together nicely. My target for by the end of the year is to be benching 100kgx6-8, and dead lifting 200kgx 6-8.

I've decided Ramadan would be a piece of piss, just did 24-ish hours without anything but water.

Fuck the lack of water, must be terrible for the kidneys, bet they ache like mad after that. not eating is alright, but the lack of water is awful. most dehydrated ive ever been is after a long booze and stim bender, usually i hammer pints of water along with the booze, but i didnt that time... ended up with aches for days, twinges, thought id fucked my kidneys up

On Ramadan they don't even go 24hrs do they? It's more like 15hrs probably. I'm more devout that most muslims!! ;)

I did another 18hrs through till this afternoon then caved in and had 2 massive bowls of soup, 2hrs later I was starving so I just munched a massive portion of sausage casserole. Fucking food just makes me more hungry! Bet I'm eating again in 2hrs!
