How About Some Folk?

Somebody mentioned the Avett Bros. I'll admit that some of their music is catchy, but just last week I saw them plastered on a GAP poster. Sorry, but being a folky is more than just playing the music.....it's a way of life. The simple fact that these guys are allowing the GAP to advertise with their picture on a poster means that the Avett Bros have graduated from being what people in here consider to be "folkies" to being mainstream pop performers. I think I puked in my mouth a little...

Typical non-conformist comment.
How does this affect their musical talent in any way whatsoever?
I don't give a shit what they do to get more money for themselves. I fail to see how being on a poster for a clothing company changes their music from Folk to Pop. I'm not seeing the logic. All I see is that routine trendy response to meet a certain cultural groups standards by dismissing someones musical abilities for "selling out."

Anyone who wouldn't accept a huge sum of money for simply having photos taken of them for a day just so they don't disappoint simple minded opinions is a moron as far as I see it.

I'd take that offer from GAP if I were a musician. And I'd buy new and better equipment with the money and treat my woman to something nice. I wouldn't be too concerned about impressing beatniks.

You are making a lot of blanket statements having never been on the other side.

#1 I never dismissed anyone's musical abilities.
#2 You talk about cultural groups as if you know something about them. Think about the cultural groups being shunned by the mere fact that they are advertising for the GAP. It was never the money that I had a problem with....it's what the GAP stands for that bothers me. Last time I walked by a GAP I saw a bunch of white people who were either rich or pretending to be rich....snobs, if you will. Not that non-white people don't shop there occasionally. But come on, you and I both know that Woody Guthrie never wore a polo shirt in his life.

Besides, my original argument was that too much of the music listed in this thread really isn't folk. I've seen the Avett Bros perform. They may play folk instruments (half the time) but they were never folkies to begin with. With the combination of folk and electric instruments that they employ, I'd consider their genre to be more aligned with Americana than folk. There's nothing wrong with Americana.....it just isn't folk.

Post up some more folk then.

Taken By Trees - To Lose Someone

I don't see the argument behind saying Avett brothers aren't folk. Americana is what folk evolved into in this country anyway. Sure there's 15 minute long djembe music that's also called folk music, and stuff that sounds just like classical music to a layman, but that doesn't limit the genre by any means.

I guess I haven't brushed up on my definitions of genres. You may be right that they're closer to Americana, I'm sure that's why you're an education & careers mod and I'm just a dumb music moderator. But I am pretty sure you deemed them pop because they've capitalized on themselves a little bit. What exactly does GAP stand for that's so bad? I don't follows such trends, because they aren't important to me. I didn't know being a folkie meant you had to meet such a certain level of standards. So as a self proclaimed folk musician, you must constantly ask yourself "what would Guthrie do?" Seems lame to me.

But I do love that you've called me out for blanket statements while assuming I'm not part of the cool kid musician club who's never seen "the other side of things." What exactly awaits on this "other side?"
You talk as if you know everything. So I'm probably just gonna let you go on and feel like you're accomplishing an argument while I feed your fire a little bit more. You can try to cover your tracks, but you were most certainly dismissing them off as shitty pop musicians because of the GAP.

So lets just get this straight, you would most definitely turn down a check from a company that asked you to pose with their product?
So since you're sure I know nothing of cultural groups, please teach me some of the basics. And you're asking me to think of the cultural groups being shunned by the fact that they're advertising for the GAP? That wasn't me shunning them, that was you, lol.
I'm sure there are some pot smoking highschoolers who would think your philosophy is awesome.

Also please highlight and explain to me how my post came off as a typical non-musician comment? What were the hints that revealed this and made you so sure?
I mean, if playing your busted acoustic on the side of the street for change is what makes you happy, then stick with it. But calling a group of musicians pop because of a move they made using their image and not their sound just doesn't add up to me. I sense that typical sour pussed bottom feeder musician hating anything a somewhat successful group may do because they aren't in that position.

Unless you stalk me or you're one of my best friends in disguise I can't believe you would take the time to say I'm the one making blanket statements while telling me who I am and what I must be.

The other side is full of despair, apathy, jealousy, and/or compromise. Lots of Cups o Noodles too, It's a blast!

I don't think Wood Guthrie ate Cup of Noodles, bro.
He ate the calluses off his finger tips because he was tired of his fingers conforming to his guitar strings.

You're getting far too hung up on genre specifics, man. The line between (American) Folk and Americana alone is so arbitrary as to not even be worth discussing.

I'll just second SirGrunge's post in relating to this topic because yeah in the end it's all good music so who really cares what genre it fits into
I really despise labels of any kind, it seems like that's all people care about is what group they fit into or what group other people fit into or what group there music falls into or whatever...

Fuck it

I only listen to post-polka-southern-funk-acid-jazz-folkcore.

You guys have probably never heard it.

Here you go:

I'd take that offer from GAP if I were a musician.

First off, when I started posting in this thread I never meant for it to lead to a pissing contest.....with another mod no less. For that I am sorry.

Now as some of you have pointed out, I guess I was being too anal about genre labels. I'm not going to apologize for that because that's just something that I do. But the stick has now been removed from my ass.

Blaze Foley - If I Could Only Fly

Blaze Foley was homeless his entire adult life. Almost all of his albums are live recordings in bars because he could never afford to go into the studio.

He was murdered by his friend's adult son. He used to run with Townes Van Zandt in Austin. So if you're a fan of Townes, Blaze was a friend of his.

This thread proves why Spotify is so popular. It just recommends similar artists without all the doofy pedantry. I've found tons of new underground artists who I'd go see in a heartbeat because of it.

Lol cool, you got me. I like how that is the only point you've chosen to bring up and then you left it at that.
