"Ronald Reagan deserves a special place in hell for waging the War on Drugs"

A Chicago politician who has crusaded to legalize marijuana in the city shocked a crowd this week when she said former President Ronald Reagan 'deserves a special place in hell' for waging the War on Drugs.

Cook County, Illinois, Board President Toni Preckwinkle was forced to apologize for her 'inflammatory' remarks, though she stood by the sentiment behind them.

Preckwinkle made the comment at an Illinois drug policy meeting at the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Chicago Democrat was talking about her greatest accomplishment, which was decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana -- making it a mere ticket, rather than an arrestable offense.

A Republican state lawmaker at the conference questioned how tickets help to change drug abuse behavior -- since it amounts to a slap on the wrist.

Preckwinkle said she believes drug abuse is a medical matter -- and not one for the justice system.
Then, she added 'Ronald Reagan deserves a special place in hell' for 'making drug use political.'

When the shocked crowd gasped, she replied: 'What? You didn't like that?'

Having thought about the many lives that have been lost and ruined thanks to the war on drugs, I would have to say that it is not too crass of a statement.

Now if more politicians were this brave we may see a faster progression.

Judging by the reader comments, most of the readers seem to be republican supporters. Which figures for a paper like the DM.

That comment is a bit surprising. If you take that comment literally, it seems a bit out of hand. I'm assuming that Reagan thought what he was doing was right (as opposed to Nixon who I believe was into the war on drugs more to lock up the opponents to the war in Vietnam than simply to stop drug users. ((I wasn't alive for either presidency so I could be completely wrong))). And other people who weren't presidents who were just as if not more responsible for the war on drugs than Reagan. So I figure if Reagan thought what he was doing is right and god and hell really do exist, Reagan probably does not deserve a special place in hell. There's definitely people who are MUCH worse than Reagan. But hey, like Jesus said "do not judge lest ye be judged"

Nobody deserves to be brutally tortured for all eternity.

How did the concept of Hell make it into Christianity, the religion of love, mercy and forgiveness?

Because unfortunately it seems that the common man or woman needs fear to keep them from doing evil. :\

The war on drugs can't last forever. It just sucks we have to live through it currently. I myself have been a victim of the war on drugs. I'd consider anyone to have been negatively affected to be a victim and my life was flipped upside down when I got caught with some pot.

I think Dante was the one who introduced the concept of a physical Hell with his La Divina Commedia, and the Catholic Church, which was always looking to expand it's political and societal influence in those days, were more than happy to take it from there. Prior to that, 'Hell' was simply an enternity spent in the absence of the love of God and was a place of sadness rather than pain. The Underworld of the Greek mythology was the primary inspiration for Dante and the Christian version of Hell and afterlife in general. It's quite interesting (and sad) to realise how many people's behaviour is still influenced and controlled by adapted versions of mythical stories that were written down over 2000 years ago. (disclaimer: I'm not fact-checking this, just writing it down from memory so I might be wrong here and there (but probably not))

Yeah I dont really have any respect for Reagen, as he certainly was anti-drug. But to say it was all his fault is just wrong

The worst thing about Reagan is all the gung-ho Republican douchebags he spawned.

If you believe Reagan was a cool dude, then you deserve to get the shit kicked out of you by a crack dealer or a pimp.
