Niagara police probe steroid, drug allegations within ranks

Police in Niagara region are grappling with allegations of steroid use and drug smuggling involving their own officers in the wake of an arrest of one constable by U.S. authorities in April.

CBC News has learned that Niagara Regional Police Service supervisors have launched an investigation following the arrest of Const. Geoff Purdie, a decorated 13-year veteran of the force and a former police instructor at a local college. A number of front-line officers within its Fort Erie, Ont., detachment have also been reassigned.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent charged Purdie with conspiracy to export and distribute controlled substances after tracking Purdie's repeated trips from Fort Erie into Niagara Falls, N.Y., to pick up packages which, according to U.S. investigators, were sent to a private mail box filled with drugs.

A U.S. criminal complaint filed with the court says authorities seized a number of packages containing testosterone, Valium, Xanax, anabolic steroids and the main ingredient used to make GHB, commonly known as the "date rape drug," which had an estimated street value of $580,000.

The ongoing investigation involves members of the U.S Department of Homeland Security Border Enforcement Security Task Force, which is made up of eight U.S. law enforcement agencies, two specialists from Canada Border Services Agency, and officers from Toronto, Peel and Niagara police. The alleged smuggling network may have reached Brampton, Ont.

So a cop gets caught dealing drugs, and he's suspended with pay! The impunity within which police are allowed to act sickens me. They should be held to higher standards than the average citizen, but the reality is the opposite.

On top of that, it's annoying to see the authors of the article clueless as to GHB's usage as a bodybuilding drug, since the media has made it so that everyone thinks that its only purpose is for "date rape."

Believe me, it is really not a bodybuilding drug. Growth hormone does nothing on it's own. This shit was dumped by nearly lifter in the 80s once they realized how addictive and easy it is to OD on. Just drop it.

I'm not condoning the illicit use of any drug by an LEO. Doing so would show blatant disregard for the laws they are trying to enforce. You should try to think beyond the philosophical issue and more toward the practical one. If I call 911, I'd rather have 2 cops that are juiced to the gills instead of some stoned idiots.

Its safety profile does not change the fact that it releases a hormone that encourages muscle growth. So even if most lifters don't use it or want to use it, which is an unsubstantiated comment on your part, it is still a drug that has positive effects on muscle growth, ergo, a bodybuilding drug.

I would prefer that whatever police responded to my call would be honest ones who didn't use any illicit drugs at all. That said, I highly doubt I will ever need the police. Much more likely that they will be after me for something. So yeah, no thanks to the cops on steroids.
