Drug addiction should be combated through abstinence-based recovery schemes, says comedian and actor on Newsnight.

Resources should be diverted away from methadone schemes and diverted towards abstinence-based recovery initiatives as a way of treatment drug addiction, Russell Brand urges in a forthcoming BBC documentary in which the comedian and actor says that he is jealous of his past life as a drug addict.

Brand said that the death of Amy Winehouse was a catalyst for his decision to make the BBC Three documentary, Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, in which he is shown watching a clip of his younger self preparing to take heroin.

Calling for a major "attitudinal shift" in terms of the way drug addicts were viewed, he told BBC Newsnight on Friday that the government was directing too much funds towards initiatives which see some 150,000 people being prescribed methadone each year.

But the entertainer, who also now abstains from alcohol, stopped short of calling for the decriminalisation of drugs.

"I don't think that we should be sending out the message to young people that it's OK to take drugs and drink alcohol," said Brand, who was joined on Newsnight by the Conservative MP David Burrowes, the journalist Peter Hitchens and Chip Somers, the chief executive of the charity Focus12 which helped Brand overcome his addiction.

Imagine that Newsnight convened a panel to discuss, say, the landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars. A scientist offers his perspective, marvelling at the engineering achievement, the use of Newtonian physics and the benefit that the space programme has given to humanity. Opposite sits a perpetually outraged conspiracy theorist, who argues that the mission is in fact a lie and the latest in a long line of frauds perpetuated by NASA. Over many minutes he makes a number of claims without adducing any evidence. When challenged he simply increases the volume, flailing from one logical fallacy to another, demanding that the BBC explain why they have given a platform to somebody pushing an obviously Marxist agenda.

Bizarrely, this is not his first appearance on television. When he isn't denying the existence of the space programme he's on Question Time stating, in all sincerity, that the politicians who seek dominion over us are actually shape-shifting lizards from the lower fourth dimension, or he's on the This Week sofa railing against the 9/11 orthodoxy. It makes for a deeply infuriating viewing but complaints are batted away with the reasoning that the BBC must account for all views.

In reality, such a figure (and there really are plenty like him) would never be invited onto a serious discussion about the space programme. When it comes to science we do not ascribe an invisible line of possible opinions, from the realist at one end to the conspiracist at the other and then stick Eddie Mair in the middle to officiate.

When it comes to Hitchens and his ilk, there's no need for facts, no humility when faced with overwhelming evidence, no reticence when it comes to invoking religion in order to make a claim for moral superiority. This is what it means to be a columnist: every red-faced, spittle-flecked, knee-jerk assertion is elevated to the level of profundity, simply by the fact they're granted a platform from which they can shout down others.

About four years ago Melanie Phillips was enjoying the latest of her many appearances on Question Time. During the programme she gleefully claimed that Arctic ice was in fact increasing and that AGW was unproven. Assuming she might have written about it in her latest column, I immediately headed to the Mail website and found the story was at that moment second on their front page. I found the scientific paper in question and nearly fell off the sofa when I read that ice had decreased year on year, with the study ending during a period of limited increase. The science showed that there was a pattern of decrease, refreezing to a smaller area, decrease, refreezing and so on, in the familiar zig-zag pattern of decline. The report ended with a warning that the scientists were deeply alarmed and saw no evidence to suggest the pattern would change. In other words, Melanie Phillips was as misguided as my imaginary conspiracist and yet she's invited back, time and again, invariably treated as if she actually has something valid to say.

I'm so fucking sick of these gobshites, of all political hues, distorting the public discourse. Bring us the evidence, delivered calmly by people who have gathered the facts and then allow time for a full debate. I want the evidence behind the claim that legalisation will increase drug use. I don't want people who start with their conclusions and then work back from there. To hell with Newsnight. People are dying. They deserve better than Russell Brand and Peter fucking Hitchens.

I don't think that we should be sending out the message to young people that it's OK to take drugs and drink alcohol

I think there are a hell of a lot better ways to do this than take away the only hope for some people at living a normal life. What a jackass. Has he even ever been addicted to opioids or knows anything about the medical and scientific conclusions regarding addiction? I'm not sure but from what he advocates, I would say not. Seriously, why would he even say this. Obviously there are plenty of people that will ruin their lives with drugs, on methadone, on heroin, on alcohol, on fucking computer duster, but those are the ones that there is little hope for in the way of drug treatment and an abstinence based treatment sure as hell is not going to work on those select individuals. I find it hard to believe that Russel Brand, apparently a former alcoholic, would not understand that some people cannot quit. Do not get me wrong, I certainly would be all for abstinence programs for hardcore addicts if they worked, but that is not the world we live in frankly.

I get the impression that Russell Brand plays up his 'addiction' and drug use as part of his public image.

He sounds like a douche bag; reformed and looking for glorification that comes with a newly cultivated self-image. no methadone clinics? abstinence only? yeah that sounds effective. what a dick.

I just saw the episode of Newsnight on IPlayer. Useless debate. Both sides arguing for a drug-free society. As if that were even possible or that we would even want that.

I agree his logic here is faulty but Russel Brand is actually a smart, well spoken, and well educated guy.

methadone is abstinence

How many truly abstinent former addicts are there out there? People that avoid all psychotropics including cigarettes?

Methadone is healthier than cigarettes.

I have to say that the methadone program is a fucking joke. Everyone I know who is on methadone got there not because of years of abuse, they got enrolled in the clinic so they could buy a dose of long lasting opioids for $6 per dose (guaranteed everyday) and then go buy fentanyl (isn't tested for) and get high all day. Methadone base coat with hits of fent to nod for a few minutes at time.

I know a girl who had several broken vertebrae, arms, legs, internal lacerations etc. from a terrible car accident. Instead of being given some other opiates, she is for some reason sent to the methadone clinic everyday (she is disabled and has to either walk or buy a cab there and back/$25)

A guy I barely know was shot in the arm with a shotgun in a hold up and his arm is FUCKED! He was put on fentanyl for the first few weeks and then quickly moved to methadone. His mother has MS and has to go to the clinic everyday and get piss tested to get her pain meds. Methadone is not only used for maintenance but it is used for pain treatment for some reason. I ask these people if methadone works for them and they say "for the first 2-3 hours... yeah, but then I have to smoke fent until midnight"

These people prior to going to the clinic were not saints but they weren't junkies and they were/are legitimate pain patients... They all make acquaintances and have to buy their fent patch from sketchy folk. Why in the world are legit pain patients being watched while they take piss tests? Why do they not get take home doses?

There are better ways than methadone, it may work for some but there should be more options than just 1.Deal with WD's yourself 2.Methadone 3.90 rehab

Russell Brand: methadone is a bad way to treat heroin addicts
Comedian backs abstinence as route to recovery

Brand told the Observer: "Without abstinence-based recovery, I'm a highly defective individual, prone to self-centredness, self-pity and self-destructive, grandiose behaviour. But if I seek the company and fellowship of other addicts and alcoholics – and, for me, alcoholism is no different from other facets of addiction – then, one day at a time, I have a chance of living free from this disease. I wouldn't be able to do it without that."

"It's not enough to legislate against taking drugs," Brand explains. "We should aim to regard this as a health issue rather than a criminal issue … That's why I suppose decriminalisation is important – I don't see it as a central tenet of what we're trying to do, but I suppose attitudinally it's significant."

"… They [politicians] don't know what they're doing. They don't understand the reality of the way people use drugs. They don't understand how to treat drugs. They don't understand how to legislate around drugs. It's just ignorance."

What was the worst thing he did to feed his addiction?
"Took me Nan's pension," he says. "That's quite bad, isn't it?"

Sure absitnence is a great way to beat drug addiction, if you just happen to have a fucking fortune lying around. I'm sure those days where he gets a craving are equally as hard to handle for him, as they are for the guy whos been slaving 10 hours a day in some shitty factory just to make ends meet.

Wait no it isn't, i'd quit drugs too if everytime I got a craving I could just fucking fly off to some lovely tropical paradise, or whatever.

srsly - fuck russell brand

23536 urges a move away from 12 step groups

This is not the first time I've seen someone discover narcotics Anonymous and subsequently call for government bans. The fellowship continually breathes life into prohibition.

No Kiss Took Place

Some of you have already seen the televised part of an encounter between me and the alleged comedian Russell Brand on Friday night. We were both taking part in a discussion on the BBC2 programme Newsnight, which can, for the moment, be watched here.

There was some speculation later in the programme as to whether Mr Brand did in fact kiss me later. I can now state that he did not (see below).

As well as me and Mr Brand, the discussion featured a Tory MP called David Burrowes, and his friend Chip Somers, who you can look up. The presenter was Stephanie Flanders, who generally appears as one of the BBC’s senior economics commentators. Much of the discussion is perfectly clear on the film. But there are two points at which it becomes a bit of a bout between me and Mr Brand. I am not sure, in any case, how long it will be available on the BBC i-player.

I provide the following transcript (which, if not perfect, is as close as I can get to accuracy) to make it easier for others to make a dispassionate assessment. I feel the need to do this partly because of the response on Twitter on Friday night. I have already described this strange means of communication as an ‘electronic left-wing mob’, which it is. On this occasion it was also an electronic lavatory wall, on which contributors almost universally (I think it was universally, but I must allow for the chance that I missed something) agreed that Mr Brand has ‘wiped the floor’ with me or ‘run rings round me’. I honestly couldn’t see how this could be said. As an argument, it left a lot to be desired, but Mr Brand certainly hadn’t won it with any key fact or argument. Mr Brand is a major celebrity with all the adulation and sycophancy which that state encourages. He was appearing alongside an ally (Mr Somers) and a Tory MP who was a good deal more sympathetic to Mr Brand than he was to my position (this is no surprise to me, but I suspect most Twitter activists are politically rather limited and think that the Tory Party is diabolically right wing).

^That Peter Hitchens sound like a fucking asshole.

I agree with Russell Brand that addiction should be treated as a sickness and not a crime. But abstinence only for everyone, fuck that. Some need maintenance therapy. Just because abstinence worked best for him(if he is really clean) doesn't mean it'll work for everyone. I say use diamorphine instead of methadone. Fuck bring back cocaine maintenance therapy:D.

Seriously. MMT saved my fucking life. I'd definitely be dead from an overdose were it not for it. While there are other options available, I think I'd only switch to a high-dose oral morphine preparation instead if that were available which it never would be in the US. But I've gotten out of the way of slamming for the most part out of my head now except for in dreams sometimes but not doing it at all. Very hard to stay away from but in the end a good deal, so methadone is what it is. It has given me a skyrocketed tolerance I suppose, and it's worked it's way to stop any cravings for me. If I had been given the options of doing a diamorphine IV treatment instead of methadone around the time I quit, I would've chose the H any day of the week. I am not sure if my life would be better or worse but I get the feeling I'd still be involved in bad shit if I were doing that and I'm sooooo glad I am not anymore, it's way worth it to me to be free and happy and enjoy my day in the sunshine lol and not have to worry about all the bullshit that comes with having some kind of habit or living in that lifestyle with all it brings. If Russell Brand really doesn't drink or do anything ever, then good for him. For me, MMT and smoking weed is all I need personally.

I hate Russsell Brand and this just makes me hate him more. He's only known over here for going out with kate perry or whatever her name is. As for Peter Hitchens i hate him too but he's not a complete retard like this guy. All the same why couldn't Peter have died instead of Christopher? it's not fair :(
