I've got a very minimal understanding of this term. I used the search engine, but only found it mentioned, not really explained.
Thanks :)

Cross tolerance is when your tolerance to one drug automatically renders you tolerant to another drug of similar effect.

For instance, if you have tolerance to heroin, you will be cross-tolerant to other opiates like morphine, codeine, etc.

If you have a tolerance to alprazolam, you will be cross-tolerant to other benzodiazepines, like diazepam, lorazepam, etc.

OK, another question. Maybe you can answer it, Captain?
I have been on oxycodone ir (approx 240mg/day) and 100mcg Fentanyl Transdermal System for over a year now ...Well, obviously I didn't start at the doses I'm taking now...for that, I'd guess 6-8 months.
Anyway, I'm afraid I may be getting to a place I've been before. My Oxycodone isn't lasting as long as normal. Last time this happened, I was switched to Oxymorphone, and I HATED it.
Luckily, my MD allowed me to switch back to oxycodone. It's been great for quite awhile, up until recently.
Anyway, any ideas on what may be a good breakthrough med to replace the oxycodone (that I wouldn't have a cross tolerance with TOO much?
My MD is very open to suggestions from me, and I'm not trying to figure out "how to get prescribed opiates/opioids".
Just don't know that I have many options:(
If it helps to have this information, in the past I've tried:
Morphine ir
Hydromorphone
Meperidine
Nothing has worked but the oxycodone. I hesitate to go running to my doctor. At least, not until I have given this LOTS of thought and consideration.
Thanks again, CH...I welcome any feedback from you all.
