Tori, a 13-year-old female orangutan at Central Java's Taru Jrung Zoo, has been moved to a new island habitat at the facility so she can quit smoking. Apparently, she picked up the habit because idiot zoo visitors would toss lit cigarettes into her enclosure for fun. From the Center for Orangutan Protection:

Lilik Kristianto, the Director of Taru Jurug zoo, stated as follows:

“One of zoo problems in Indonesia is the visitors tease the animals. Although there is a signage to do not give food or cigarette to the animals, but the people are still doing it and make a fun of it. Even, sometimes the visitors are trying to hurt the animals. This relocation is a permanent solution for this problem, and also providing better facilities that resemble to their habitat in the wild. Tori can climb to 5 big trees in this island. This could be one of the best enclosure in Indonesia.”

The most interesting thing about this for me is that (this is something I have never looked into) it seems the compulsion to alter your consciousness, when available, is something pursued by other high-order mammals.

My other thought is that it is incredibly fucked up to give the orangutan cigarettes since they cannot understand the long-term effects to make an informed decision.

If i had subhuman intelligence and was imprisioned in a zoo please throw drugs at me.

I was smoking my cig in the exact same way as the orangutan when I glanced at her photo. =( I feel subhuman now.

yeah i felt the same about the lit cigarette thing makes me kinda angry, seems like they are being straight up unfriendly/mean with it, where the hell is zoo staff with a bull whip or some shit?

i don't think any animals should be dosed against there will with certain drugs unless its for science/research purposes that are qualified to do so. this is a zoo though they should be trying to let the animal live as long as possible so it can remain in its home in the zoo for them to look at whenever they visit, obviously they aren't thinking that far into it and just laughing at the fact a orangutan is smoking a cigarette.

also why not just throw her a joint of cannabis instead of letting her smoke cigarettes, itd actually be funny to watch a orangutan smoke down a joint imo. i would also hate to see some of the enclosures in Indonesia.

Is this not the type of idea/mindset that may have lead to the cigarette addiction in the first place? I can envision bored zoo keepers standing in front of her cage smoking for a while so she understands how it works then throwing the lit cigarettes into her cage to see if she'll mimic them...

of course that could be not how it happened at all. Perhaps it was accidental at first then they just thought it was funny afterwards...
its wrong either way though
