Misc Anxiety

I only read a couple of the most recent posts in this thread, so pardon me is this is out of the context of this thread.
I went and saw my psychiatrist today for my regular 3 months med check (I take Alprazolam every night for sleep and Methylphenidate, which is why I see him).
He informed me of a disturbing development regarding treatment of anxiety with benzodiazepines. Right now it is limited to people on Medicaid or Medicare or whatever it's called ...But he is concerned that in the next year or two it may affect us all.
Apparently some studies have been done and according to the people who make these decisions, there's enough proof to act on this thing.
Anyone on Medicaid (mainly older people) will from now on only be able to take benzos for 6 weeks maximum. Supposedly it's because the drugs have proven to contribute to loss of memory.
My psychiatrist didn't seem to buy it, but he thinks it will be this way for us all at some point.
I don't know if it's something local, or more widespread. He gave me some paperwork on it so I'm gonna check it out tonight.
I'm wondering if I can take a pic of the article and post it? I'm not real good with that stuff lol.

Sure you could, you could host the picture with something like imgur.com

That sounds horrible! I've been on benzodiazepines for a decade and I don't plan on stopping my scripts anytime soon. I'm not on medicare/medicaid though, so maybe I'm in the clear? I dunno, that's startling news macd610

I have anxiety attacks all the time. I have had them for years. The only long term medication that worked for me is Paxil and I couldn't handle the no orgasm side effect. I got off that by taking GABA. It's at health food stores. Right now I just deal with it. I just remember that it's anxiety and I'm not dying. There is nothing wrong with me. It usually passes or calms down. Xanax is good for once in a while anxiety attacks. But not daily. Most dr won't give it out because of all the abuse going on. I hope you find something that works. My head is killing me right now or I would have more in put.

I have been taking it daily for years. Whenever I run out I have this awful feeling that my throat/neck muscle are seizing up, and I don't sleep well :(I Scares me to death, the idea of stopping. Maybe that's the problem lol

You can try non narcotic drugs to treat anxiety which are just effective as narcotic (ativan, ) like buspar, vistaril, Paxil, effexor, lexapro the thing you need to ask your self is are you looking to treat the nxiety with or without the buzz and substance abuse issues that eventually follow it.

Hey TC- I tried to figure out how to attach a pic of the article I mentioned, but couldn't figure it out. I have it on my device (I can only come to this site on my smart phone.
It's pretty interesting. it doesn't say anything about the medicaid stuff I told you about but it is an explanation of the reasoning behind the new development. my psychiatrist gave me a copy of it so all I could do was take a picture.
If you have the time, would you mind walking me through the steps? What I need to do is somehow get the picture from my phone's gallery to here.
If you think it'd be more appropriate to PM me, as always, I love to hear from you.
I hope all of you here are having a good day!

Most forum members are probably under the age of 25 and a vast majority talk of getting scripted more than 1 or even 2 benzodiazepines, along with opioids, amphetamines/methylphenidate, SSRI's and antipsychotics.

You hit my rx's on the nail! Fentanyl patches, Oxycodone ir, Alprazolam, and Methylphenidate! I'm in my 30's and no antipsychotic, but impressive all the same :)

LOL! It's the common formula for all doctors. I'm on fentanyl patches, alprazolam, dextroamphetamine, Abilify, and escitalopram. I'm 28 though.

Guess I'm not as special as I thought. ;)
OH, and by the way...I forgot to mention I'm also prescribed Lexapro (sorry, cannot think of the generic name-I try to talk about all drugs using their generic name)...but I haven't taken it for about a year.
Not an antipsychotic, but an antidepressant. Pretty close, right?

Lexapro = escitalopram.

If you're having trouble with imgur.com, there's also imageshack.us although I don't like their service as you need an account. You should just make an account at imugr.com, what part are you getting stuck at?

That's true, I've noticed that. Not the age part specifically, but people getting benzos/opiates/stimulants is common. I myself get Alprazolam, Temazepam, Triazolam, Oxycodone, Methamphetamine, No ADs, No APs.

I wonder whats up with this? I don't abuse my medications but I'm sure someone else would.

There gonna try ssri's first..i repute the motherfuckers. So i go back after playing their little games, tell em their SSRI miracle drug was pure SHIT!

Then comes Buspirone, Hydroxyzine, and last but not least Benzos...use at your own risk, if you take them everyday you will have some uncomfortable wd(insomnia, muscle pain, and depression, uncomfortable just wierd shit happens)
I now also repute benzos...i dont mind addiction if the positive effects of the drug are worth it but i feel like i swallowed a sugar pill with benzos...
and the only thing that REALLY works is opi8s and pot although sometimes pot makes it worse and no doctor prescribes narcotics(or pot in my state) for anxiety so good luck me..and you

I honestly think that if the OP does end up medicating and needs something in addition to an SSRI while it's getting to a stable blood plasma level Hydroxyzine is a very safe and somewhat effective means to that end.

As others have said though, give therapy and lifestyle changes a chance first. I don't think anyone means this from a condescending perspective, it's honestly in your best interest.

Thanks everybody for the input, my parents need to make an appointment. I think I have bad GAD because around the time I had surgery I could take 2 10mgs of Valium before I had to do MRI and it wouldn't do squat for stress and Ive heard plenty of stories about the addiction/dependence, My parents did say they where going to set like 5 consoling sessions for me but they procrastinate with their promises

I wish you luck. I hate anxiety and being scared all the time. I hope you find something that works for you and you get better.

Yeah I have tried lifestyle changes but, Soon I am going to be in high school next year which will create stress and anxiety so I am trying to get this all taken care of before that.

Just a quick suggestion that until your parents do get you an appointment it might at least help a little to try a low dose of Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) as it's available otc, and should help to some extent at the least. It also has a very benign side effect profile.

Be sure to keep us up to date on how you are doing, and all the best.
