SINGER Lily Allen’s dad Keith has agreed to take a cocktail of Class A drugs on live TV.

Pals of the ex-hellraiser, who has admitted drug use in the past, say he “can’t wait to get stuck in”.

The 59-year-old comic, who played the Sheriff of Nottingham in BBC drama Robin Hood, will appear in Channel 4’s Drugs Live, which examines the effects of recreational drugs.

this stinks of publicity stunt nothing more i can not see what insight any one will get out of just another channel4 show done for rating as drugs a all the rage with tabloids because of the legal highs crap at the minute . as for keith its sort of simple he is getting to that point in life were no one really knows who he is now a days and he needs this to get more work . but i could be wrong . just do not like or trust channel 4 these days

I can't really see the point in this type of programme. It's informative to show the effects of various drugs to bust a few myths about them etc but why do it live? What advantage does that have over a filmed experiment?

it will get more people watching in the hope that something bad happens like a bad trip or they screw up the dosage and some one o.d./die , its like car crash tv its live so more will watch in the hope of it going wrong , money money money all the way typical channel 4

It would be great if they could pick someone other than an actor to do this. Would be more believable for sure.

they did this a couple of years ago if i remember right with members of the public also a one with people going through withdrawals from crack and heroin but this one is just has total sensationalism bullshit wrote all over it i mean do we really want to watch some semi popular actor who if his daughter was not lily allens would not even be on it going on about all the coke and booze he has done ? and just to do something that will have no value to any one at all ? i mean what will be learned from this

  • Actor is believed to have been filmed taking MDMA
  • Television chiefs have defended stunt, saying it is ethical and scientific
  • Drugs charities have raised concerns about the stunt

Actor Keith Allen is to be shown taking Class A drugs as part of a television documentary examining their effect.

The 59-year-old father of pop star Lily Allen is believed to have been filmed taking MDMA, a pure form of ecstasy, for a forthcoming Channel 4 documentary series.

Television chiefs have defended the stunt as 'ethical and scientific'. But the decision to show celebrities taking drugs on television has caused deep concern among drugs charities.

Julia Manning, chief executive of independent think-tank 2020 Health, condemned the programme.

She said: 'The first two words that come to mind are reckless and pointless. We are fully aware of the effects of Class A drugs on the body.

'This will achieve nothing. If anything it will “celebritise” the taking of illegal substances. This is purely anecdotal. It's not part of any proper study. It's publicity-seeking TV at its worst.'

A spokesman for the Transform Drug Policy Foundation said the show was no way to explore drug problems.

The study is being conducted by researchers Professor David Nutt and Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, at Imperial College London.

Controversial drugs expert Professor Nutt was sacked in 2009 as chairman of the independent Advisory Council on Misuse of Drugs after claiming alcohol and tobacco were more harmful than LSD, ecstasy and cannabis.

what is going on with prof nut has he total gone nuts of late

In one TV programme last recently he administered psilocybin to a TV presenter. It was all quite sobre and scientific and not that controversial, really. At the time he was doing research into the the areas of the brain affected by psilocybin and made some interesting discoveries that are now possible with modern tech.

So I guess this is the same but with MDMA. The press have just got hold of this and are just making a grand panic out of it.

God forbid we film someone using drugs, kids might get the idea it's socially acceptible to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes do MDMA.

Keith Allen defends "radical" drugs documentary

BBC News

Speaking on ITV 1's This Morning, Allen said it was "insane" to suggest the show glamorised drug use. "If you think that I'm glamorising the taking of drugs by spending an hour and 20 minutes for two consecutive Mondays in an MRI scanning machine, then you're insane. "There were policemen taking part. There were definitely soldiers, people who'd never taken it before. It's a very, very forensic analysis, a neurological analysis of the effects of MDMA."

Channel 4 to screen volunteers taking the drug Ecstasy

By Richard Alleyne
6:00AM BST 19 Jul 2012

An experiment in which volunteers take the dance drug Ecstasy is to be screened on Channel 4 in a first for British television.

Volunteers will take MDMA, the pure form of Class A drug, as part of the groundbreaking scientific study to be shown on two new Channel 4 science programmes: Drugs Live: The Ecstasy Trial. The experiments by Professor David Nutt, the sacked government adviser on drugs, and Prof Val Curran, are designed to see the effect the Ecstasy has on the brain. The six month long neuroscience study will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the effects of MDMA on resting brain activity in healthy volunteers for the first time.

Volunteers will take a 83mg dose of pharmaceutical grade MDMA (as well as a placebo) under laboratory conditions at Imperial College London, supervised by medical staff, before undergoing an fMRI brain scan and series of cognitive tests to examine MDMA’s effects on empathy, trust and memory.

The study, which is funded by Channel 4, has been subject to an ethical approval process for research involving healthy volunteers, who were all screened by medics and psychiatrists before giving their fully-informed consent to take part.
