So generally speaking I believe oxycodone is stronger than hydrocodone. I dose around 30-35mg of oxy to get a good buzz going. Today I took 30mg of hydro and feel the same buzz if not stronger than that of the oxy. I'm wondering if anyone knows why this is the case since hydro is a bit weaker than oxy? Is it just the way my body metabolizes the drug? I didn't think it was possible for hydro, a "weaker" opiate, to hit me harder than a stronger opiate. I apologize if this isn't completely making sense, I'm not exactly sober.

I like hydro much better. Its true you have to take a little more than you would with oxycodone. The reason this is is because oxycodone gives most people a little energetic kick if you will, while hydro is more of a sedating drooling effect. Which myself being a downer person I prefer.

Technically oxycodone is stronger than hydrocodone mg per mg. However what youre feeling, I believe, is the fact that oxycodone gives most people a more energetic kick, while hydrocodone is more of a sedating, want sit down and chill feeling. Thats why I prefer hydrocodone because I prefer the sedating, almost nodding out feeling. Youre probably the same way. Sorry if its hard to understand Im a little out of it but Im sure you understand at least somewhat. Im sure someone else will clarify in more detail.

Edit: Didnt meant to double post. Didnt think the first one went through.

I have never tried hydrocodone as it's pretty much non-existent this side of the pond (until I find me a friendly chemist to synthesize me some... or travel to Luxembourg/Austria), but I have heard from a great many people that they consider hydrocodone both more sedating and more euphoric at equivalent doses, whereas oxycodone is the better analgesic, and more stimulating in its effects.

Both are metabolized by the same enzyme system, cytochrome P450, but from what I gather, a significant part of the analgesic effect of hydrocodone results from metabolism into hydromorphone. Oxycodone is also metabolized into more potent compounds, but is also a powerful analgesic in its own right. If it had something to do with metabolism, I think you would probably find oxycodone stronger than hydrocodone.

yeah oxycodone is metabolized into oxymorphone. But yeah thats what I was trying to get at you said it perfectly

Also keep in mind that cross tolerance between these drugs is not complete so when you switch from one you do regular to one you only take rarely it may feel a bit stronger at first.

Maybe your tolerance dropped a little, or you prefer the high from hydrocodone more than the high from oxycodone. I don't find morphine to be that euphoric so I have to take far greater than the equivalent dose of another opiate.

I was unaware of that! That could explain it then :)

I prefer hydrocodone to oxycodone due to its more sedative properties. There's more of a nod with hydrocodone and I feel like it lasts slightly longer than oxycodone. Yes, oxycodone might be very slightly more potent (mg per mg) but that is no big deal: I just take a bigger dose of hydrocodone.

Could be how much food you had in your stomach, tolerance built up over time, the fact that hydrocodone is a little more sedating to most people, or placebo. There are a lot of factors that go into how a drug will affect you, impossible for somebody on this forum to tell you exactly why. But, oxycodone is around 1.5x as strong as hydrocodone.

There are several reasons why this could have been the case. As mentioned, there is not complete cross-tolerance with opiates, although often a lot amongst similar opiates. Also, the effects of hydrocodone and oxycodone are different. Some say they prefer hydrocodone as they say it is "dreamier", more sedating, and even more euphoric. Not all users feel this way, but some really do. There is also the possibility that you do metabolize hydrocodone in such a way that it provides you with a better effect than it would to most due to decreased or increased enzymes (I forget exactly how it works with hydrocodone). Personally, I have much more experience with oxycodone, but would explore with hydrocodone more if I had the chance. The only downside to hydrocodone over oxycodone that I really see is the fact that it doesn't last quite as long, and oxycodone seems just a bit more euphoric without as much sedation. I have also noticed hydrocodone to release more histamine than oxycodone, but wouldn't really mind that effect so long as I kept comfortably cool. These could all be potential upsides, however. I might want an opiate a bit more short-acting, that sedates me a bit more and makes me a bit warmer. I guess it would depend on the situation.

Thanks everyone!

And thanks Alex, very helpful info. I guess in my mind I was kind of put off to trying hydro because it isn't as "strong" -- I guess it's just a mental thing. But I prefer it over oxy now, for sure. Im a very uptight, anxious type of girl and I find that this really mellows me out and makes me more relaxed and euphoric than oxy. Don't get me wrong, oxy is very powerful and I do enjoy it on occasions (going out with new groups of people -- I have bad social anxiety).

Does anyone have any advice on safely mixing the two? In addition to this, does anyone have any experience on the effects of mixing the two? Granted every body is different, I'm just wondering I guess if one would potentiate the other and which one? If that makes any sense at all...

I actually find that hydrocodone lasts longer than oxycodone. With hydrocodone, you come up, reach a peak and stay at that peak for a good hour before you begin to come down and the effects linger for about 4 hours. Oxycodone on the other hand, it's quick up and as soon as you reach peak you immediately begin to come down. The effects linger for about 2-3 hours. As far as histamine release, I find them roughly the same. I enjoy the greater sedation and total body relaxation that hydrocodone brings on. That same exact warmth is missing with oxycodone, IME.

I usually alternate oxy one weekend, hydro the next. I agree with the posts above, there's nothing wrong with hydrocodone. It lasts longer, has basically the same effect and is not as itchy as oxy, you just have to take a bit higher dose than oxycodone. The only opioid I would tell you to skip is codeine. That stuff is total crap, especially if you are opiate-experienced.

^ You know there was a time when codeine provided me with blissful euphoria, but that was back when I first started using opiates when I was 15. It was just absolutely great. It was the opiate that got me hooked on opiates. I remember the first time I ever got high on opiates and it was with codeine - I took nearly 300 mg and 20 minutes later the greatest feeling I had ever felt in my life came over me in waves. I was so happy, content, euphoric and high that I just layed in my bed smiling. It was the greatest feeling ever. But as I graduated to hydrocodone, oxycodone, and the rest of the bunch, codeine lost its magic. It is a true opiate in every sense of the word. I laugh sometimes when people try to compare tramadol to codeine. Codeine is still way better, at least its a real narcotic not some fake synthetic copycat that doesn't even produce opiate effects.

I miss the days when I can take some codeine and get stoned or just 10 mg of hydrocodone and I was in la-la land. Those days will never ever come back again.

1. Who cares if a drug is synthetic? If it works it works, and all opiates that aren't morphine and codeine are either synthetic (tramadol, methadone, tapentadol, levorphanol) or mostly/semi-synthetic(oxycodone, hydrocodone, heroin, too many more to list)

2. Tramadol is as much of an opiate codeine is, as it activates the mu-opioid receptors in the brain. Just for some people it works more as an SNRI, but it still metabolizes in to o-desmethyltramadol, which is a mu-opioid agonist.
