People love a good story. It's why when Rudy Eugene ate Ronald Poppo's face beneath the MacArthur Causeway on May 26, the whole world latched onto one cop's careless explanation: Bath salts drove Eugene insane.

Cue public panic. In Miami, media blamed the mysterious compound -- often called synthetic cocaine -- for a guy exposing himself to children and a young man growling at police. In West Virginia, one dude was so high on bath salts (can we call him a "bath saltine"?) that he supposedly donned a bra and panties, slaughtered his neighbor's pygmy goat, and passed out.

Nobody latched harder onto the idea that bath salts are a demon drug than Manuel Maroño. But is the Sweetwater mayor full of synthetic crap?

Since 2002, Maroño has presided over the peaceful suburb with just 14,000 residents. It wasn't until this year, however, that he found his signature issue.

In early May, Sweetwater became the first city in Florida to ban what was then the newest drug on earth: fake pot. Maroño came up with the idea after police warned him about middle and high school kids streaming into a local convenience store to buy the stuff.

Eugene's ravenous rage changed the equation, however. Four days later, Maroño announced he was expanding the ordinance to include synthetic cocaine. All this despite the fact that state legislators already outlawed both substances last year. But Maroño says his town's ordinances is broader and better able to combat different varieties of the drug.

"It's documented nationwide that children and adults go into manic or psychotic states where they try to hurt themselves or others while on synthetic highs," Maroño told the Miami Herald at the time. "How many more people need to die to get this epidemic under control?"

But Maroño's research seems to have consisted of little more than a Google search. By his own admission, Sweetwater hasn't made any arrests for bath-salt-related crimes. Similarly, Miami-Dade police say they have made "zero arrests relating to bath salts" in the past year.

Then there's the case of Rudy Eugene. Last week a toxicology report debunked the bath salts hypothesis. The only thing the so-called Miami Zombie had in his system was good old-fashioned marijuana.

Despite the autopsy results, Maroño still believes Eugene was on bath salts. "They change the chemical components all the time," he says. "You can do as many toxicology reports as you want -- it's not going to show up."

Could Maroño be legislating a problem that might not exist?

"The problem exists," he retorts. "It's a bit naive to say that the problem doesn't exist."

What a fucking nutcase, oh the toxicology said there was nothing.. BUT THERE WAS DEFINATELY SOMETHING.

it's blind ignorance like this that makes me wanna eat somebodys face...maybe this guys stupidity is the cause of this zombie epidemic?

100% wrong. MDPV will show up in a toxicology report.

I'm sure many other active ingredients in bath salts like 4-MMC will show up as well.

4-MMC and MDPV might but lots of the actives won't. 4-MMC and MDPV are already scheduled and most of the stuff being sold now is the next generation on unscheduled drugs. MDPV and 4-MMC haven't been the big players for months now.

It is dumb to just assume the guy was on drugs with no proof but the fact is a lot of this stuff won't show up on drug tests. I wrecked my car in a DUI a couple years ago when I was completely plastered on GHB and I beat the DUI because they didn't test for it. That isn't exactly the same thing but it is the same idea. The tests look for different metabolites and if you are using some brand new chemical it is completely plausible it won't be detected.

IMO I was thinking the exact same thing.

MDPV hasn't caused people to eat faces before, so it could definitely be some new drug that they aren't able to identify with a tox-report... There are what... a thousand chemicals that could be in bath salts? I'm sure they can't test for all of them lol

TBH I think this is some kind of Government conspiracy lmao, just like the MKULTRA tests, they are trying out their new mind control drugs on the public... of course they wouldn't let the public know what they were!

ok people freaking out on drugs thats been happening ever since drugs had markets and uses by humans if im not mistaken. also people go crazy or feel as if there going crazy all the time without even touching drugs or these new super "lsd" bath salts out there, haha.

these people also seem like they abandoned common sense a long time ago.

Exactly. All sorts of people use drugs. Sick people, anxious people, healthy people,........ and of course batshit insane people. The drug will always be blamed though. "Bathsalts" aren't the safest drugs mentally or physically bc of the way they're invented(bc of drug laws) but they'll still fuel the illegality of existing drugs with a known side effect profile bc people will class them with all drugs despite basic logic dictating otherwise.

Anyone consider these new bath salts contain one of those PCP-like RC's, such as methoxetamine and 3-MeO-PCP? If watching Cops as a kid has taught me anything, drugs that act as NMDA receptor antagonist's while inhibiting the reuptake of dopamine tend to cause black men to get naked and reak havoc on the world. Seriously, instead of sensationalizing headlines somebody should do some real research and figure out what this is. Before "bath salts" were made illegal in my state, most of the brands contained MDPV, and we never had any problems with people getting naked and eating off peoples faces. Traditional stimulant psychosis doesn't cause this.
