A group of Nevada Highway Patrol troopers and a retired police sergeant have filed a racketeering complaint against the NHP and Las Vegas Metro Police in U.S. District Court.

The complaint alleges that after then-Gov. Jim Gibbons approved a K-9 program to target drug runners on Nevada's highways, Nevada Highway Patrol Commander Chris Perry intentionally undermined the program.

The complaint alleges that the drug-sniffing dogs used by troopers in the program were intentionally being trained to operate as so-called trick ponies, or dogs that provide officers false alerts for the presence of drugs.

The dogs were being trained to alert their handlers by cues, instead of by picking up a drug's scent by sniffing, the complaint said. When a dog gives a false alert, this resulted in illegal searches and seizures, including money and property, the complaint said.
The 103-page complaint alleges that Perry, along with others, used the K-9s to undermine the program to systematically conduct illegal searches and seizures for financial benefit
.

The complaint also alleges the defendants, which also includes the state's Public Safety Department and individuals in NHP and Metro, were involved in a Federal RICO conspiracy, also known as the Federal Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act.

NHP, Metro and the state have not returned calls from 8 News NOW for comment.

Allegations also include corruption, abuse of office and official cover ups.

Cool that the ex-cops came clean and are making it public.
But what an evil thing to have done. Using the pretext of the drug war to steal from the people.
Probably focused on people they didn't like, based on the color of their skin, length of their hair, bumper stickers, fashion, etc.
Probably not limited to Nevada! I hope that they get all the fuckers in the country (world!) who are doing this shit.

I would assume this happens quite often. I wonder if charges will be brought against them
be wary of driving over ohio.

they will often confiscate when they have no legal grounds, and then it will be more expensive to go get the thing back.

happened to me in Jesery once. I was leaving a concert and got pulled over, the officer kept asking me where the drugs where even though i didn't have any. He never even asked to search my vehicle, he just got a dog and then pretty blatantly told the dog to sit. He then proceded to tell me that the dog was letting him know there where drugs in the car. I just laughed at him which made him pretty angry....

This makes me sick. The best thing that could come out of this would be that K9 programs lose credibility and decrease in use. I mean, how are you going to know? The fact that this can be done puts the civil rights of any member of the public being subjected to a search like this, in question.

I've been a victim of one of these K9 alerts. I filed a complaint on a pig who did this to me once and searched for 1 and a half hours to no avail. I waited in 100+ degree texas heat. fucking BS. I hadn't even been smoking or anything but even his supervisors dgaf. fucking pigs :X

It ain't just america, i've been sniffed out coming back from amsterdam by a supposed sniffer dog. (obviously I had nothing on me, fuck international smuggling charges lolol)

I Called the handler out on his bullshit while being searched, they weren't happy when they found nothing, assholes.
