Question about Xanax

I have been taking 2mg Xanax for about 5 months and just recently started to have blackouts, I cannot remember parts of my day. However, my memory eventually does come back to me, usually I see something and will trigger it. When I first started Xanax my doctor prescribed 0.5mg and 1mg which didn't help much until he told me to take 2 of the 1mg. So question is, will this cause permanent memory loss? Should I be worried? (to be honest I do not mind the blackouts because it helps me worry less through-out the day)
 
Benzos all cause amnesia (blackouts) to certain degrees. Xanax (alprazolam) is one of the stronger ones when it comes to producing amnesia.

If you don't remember it now, chances are you will never remember it...maybe bits and pieces.
 
5'4 130lbs, I am just worried about the long term effect it might cause to my brain, I want to stop taking them after college but then I thought what if I can't remember what I learned.
 
Be careful, DOtty. Is your doctor aware of the situation? If not, you should tell him/her.

I don't want to scare you, that would be useless, but blacking out during the day isn't a normal situation at all. It could have severe short and long term impact on your life and the quality of it. I'm thinking of Alzheimer stuff and things of this gravity aren't to be played with. How old are you?
 
Loulou, you may be a bit heavy on the dire possibility side of this. If you have a couple of blackouts during the day, THOSE day's memories will never come back, but as long as you don't allow this to continue, these isolated incidents have a very low potential of causing permanent damage.

Loulou's right, this is not to be played with, but I wouldn't worry about long term damage at the moment. Unless, that is, you're drinking with these and/or have other health issues. And I'll second our Mod's question: What's your age?

I am 24, and no I did not tell my doctor about this situation because I was afraid he might take the drug away. I do not drink either. This drug helps my anxiety and panic attack, I have tried so many before finding this one that finally works.
 
Hi podsnomo, yes I may be a bit heavy here, but 24 is a young age. DOtty, I still do think you should tell your doctor about this problem, so (s)he can adjust your dose in a way that will satisfy both of you, or find another benzo if (s)he decides so; or if you think you will be taken off Xanax and you fear this situation, maybe find another doctor.

Again, it isn't my role to scare you at all, DOtty, but I do find that you are in a situation which is a bit problematic, or will be in the future if you don't take measures to adjust your dose or change for another benzo ;)

IME Xanax is the worst out of all the Benzos ive tried that cause blackouts.

I used to think like you... and your statement "to be honest I do not mind the blackouts because it helps me worry less through-out the day" was exactly how i initially felt.

But then as time went by the blackouts and not knowing who? what? where? when? etc just caused me to worry more about my behaviour after the blackout as friends and family would always comment on how i would act completely out of character and not be such a nice person whilst i was under the influence of Benzos.

In turn causing me to be more Anxious! As im the master of self analyzis/over anylyzing anyway.
