Hi

There's a new Chinese medication shop in town selling all sorts of stress relief and so called happy pills and energy pills to but I can't read what's in them. My question is are any of these Chinese medicines worth it? I know I have given hardly any information but has anyone ever tried any?

Thanks

You could post some pictures.

I don't think you can get anything more than a lukewarm 'maybe' from us without details.

Many years ago I took an interest in TCM. I now know it's all bullshit. But some of the herbs do have minimal effect.

I tried all sorts of alternative treatments years back to try and control my acute Psoriasis and I have to say that Chinese Herbal medicine was the only one that had a discernible effect. The stuff I used was a mix of actual herbs and roots and stuff which I had to boil up and then strain off the liquid and drink it 3 times a day. The "Doctor" I saw did not recommend the pre-prepared pills and said they were no where near as effective as the raw herbal mix.

Clearly there are ingredients in the "herbal" mixes that have real active substances in them, I had to stop taking the stuff as it was making me physically sick despite me having a fairly strong stomach. It tasted really bad but I think what was worse was the smell and when your boiling the stuff up daily and having to drink it as well it can get to you, in the end i could taste it and smell it the whole time. It was far from a cure but it definitely made the condition less aggressive.

You're asking an extremely broad question. There's no way to answer unless you give us the specific names of the herbs or medicines that you need info about.

After years of seeing relatives use Chinese medicine, being advised by all manner of charlatans who have little scientific background, I can assure you that the answer is almost certainly 'no'.

It's a poorly-regulated snakeoil industry, and your money would be better invested elsewhere.

As a rule of thumb, any medication called 'happy pills' or 'energy pills' are a victory of marketing over efficacy.

This. It's like asking, "Are all medicines made in the U.S. good?" How would we know? If you can't read what's inside them, maybe you shouldn't take them. Don't take unknown drugs.

This, it could be anything. Don't take unknown drugs.

Mr Threat whilst I agree with the sentiment and in the case of Chinese medicine there has been at least one case in the UK of Kidney failure due to one of the ingredients in a herbal mix.

But your statement above surely (Shirley) rules out all drugs other than those that you get from a proper pharmacy, all street drugs are effectively "unknown", it's great HR but hardly realistic
