Eating Salvia?

Anyone have any experience or knowledge about eating salvia divinorum? I'm thinking sub-perceptible doses initially. I haven't been able to find much info on this, most info is about smoking it or taking extract sublingually.

Also interested in any info on using salvia to help reduce opioid dependence (specifically to help with withdrawal symptoms - both mental and physical - from tapering off methadone).

Thanks :)

I think this is possible, make a tea or even just eat the plain leaf. But you would need a lot of material..
I think buccal administration is a better way..

Tell me if I'm wrong, I'm really interested in making the salvia expereince longer and more workable !

^ yep, buccal is the way.
as far as i know it is not orally active (or at least not very effective) and it is traditional to keep a quid in the cheek/lip for maximum absorption. i have not done it myself, not being prepared for a longer duration of something i'm not sure i'm particularly keen on to begin with.
i'm sure someone who has tried this could give a better summation with dosages etc.
good luck!

get 20 to 30 leaves, wad them up in your mouth and chew for about 15 minutes, do not swallow the leaves, then after 15 minutes spit the whole lot out, lie down and close your eyes.

You could chew the leaves like the tribes would do but i dont think straight up eating extract would do anything....there is "liquid salvia" though, never tried it myself. sounds like that is what you are looking for

You make it sound like it's easy..
8-15gr of (rehydrated) dry leaves in your mouth is NOT fun. I've done it a few times. Now I'm trying to make my own extract and ingest that.

That would be an impossibility, if you are talking about fresh leaves. Once I managed 6 with a lot of effort. Salvia leaves are HUGE!

In my experience, it is not interesting chew the leaves. The most I got was a cannabis styled high, with some euphoria and slight dissociation. Not bad, but the discomfort of chewing them, with the associated bad taste and the intense green saliva, far outweighs the effects produced.

I tried eating a couple of fresh leaves without any effects, but perhaps if you force yourself into eating a salad bowl of leaves you may get somewhere.

Stomach acid destroys the salvinorum A, the active chemical. Liquid extracts, held in the mouth without swallowing, will give you a much longer experience than smoking. Depending on the company you buy it from, a tablespoon of liquid extract, held under the tongue for maybe 5 minutes, will give you a low level experience lasting for about an hour. You had best have a buddy on hand, the first time that you try this... all humans ae not alike in their response to these things!!!

yes i was thinking about eating it the other day. perhaps if you ate enough, although perhaps the poster above me is correct in saying the stomach acid destroys it - i have read elsewhere that it is simply far less efficient to eat the leaves then chewing them. if the above poster is correct, perhaps you could eat an alkali food or somehow neutralise your stomach acid with something that would give it a longer quantity of time to be absorbed. may or may not work

this thread has somewhat underlined why the widespread method is smoking extract

As I said, I am looking to get sub-perceptible or barely perceptible effects, so I don't need/want the most effective method. I had someone in another forum suggest eating salvia.

I thought salvia would worsen the withdrawal symptoms actually

Why do you think that?

Why do you think that?

Because

Activation of the κ-opioid receptor appears to antagonize many of the effects of the μ-opioid receptor

...activation of the κ-receptor antagonizes various μ-receptor-mediated actions in the brain, including analgesia, tolerance, reward and memory processes

ref

From what I understand, recreatives opiods work with the μ-opioid receptor and Salvinorin A is a κ-opioid receptor agonist. IIUC, this would mean that taking something that antagonize the effects of the μ-opioid receptor would induce withdrawal symptoms in an opiod dependent person. But i'm by no way a pharmacologist, I'd be happy if someone knowledgeable about this could confirm/invalidate and explain it in layman terms or if someone with experience about this could tell us what he/she felt :)

Instead of eating the leaves, it is best if you use the sublingual route. Just chew some leaves for half an hour and keep the saliva (and salvia ;P) in your mouth. The effects should come slowly and last for about an hour.
