just today finished watching chan park wooks vengeance trilogy (sympathy for mr vengeance, oldboy, sympathy for mrs vengeance aka lady vengeance)
and FUCK they are so sick and twisted yet pull on heart strings in a weird way just pure and rich with emotion from fear to ecstasy

nice disney vibe you got going on there ;p

(I love Gasper ... seen most of his at the cinema too)

Yeah I love a good Disney feel-good film =D

I have reviewed my spelling in a few posts and I've been pretty shocked at how things have been going. I'm going to lay off the drugs (the dissos anyway (mind you I'm still going to stock up before they get banned)) for a bit and see what happens.

el-oh-el ... only you would give up drugs for the sake of spelling. well, maybe, possibly Jancrow too

So I watched Goon and...

meh, just watching an ep of Touch before bed (shitey new yank tv with keifer sutherland), to try to get the sight of blood splatters and testosterone fueled violent nonsense out of my head.. :( ...t'was depressing stuff mainly (sorry MSB, I did give it a shot)

I don't mind violence (even spades of it) when it's fantasy shit like Romero, or if it's relevant or intrinsic to making a point in some way (see Cronenberg for best examples of that) ... but Goon doesn't sit in that category for me. Had to look away a few times. brawn wankathons don't do it for me

from the subject matter of the movie, I'd of been more interested in an exploration of the Queubec 'faggot' type teams (ie: proper hockey) vs goonsquads or whatever ...

[edit] I don't like sports movies much either (like shammy) ... any given sunday was alright ... but altho I end up liking a lot of his movies, Oliver Stone flicks tend to try to beat you into submission with a bat to the head in a bid to get you to agree with him

NBK poss makes my top 20 flicks list tho ... even though he totally changed the tarantino script and made it something completely different

[edit] sports movie theme aside, I'd be extremely surprised if Shambles doesn't loathe this, incl the last scene complete with tacky Opera to boot

That. Precisely that.

Christ what a nasty piece of shite that film was. Was expecting summat kinda ropey but that film is just atrocious on every conceivable level. I honestly cannot think of a redeeming feature... the sweariness was okay, I spose. The rest was either moronic, unpleasant, mawkish or - mostly - all three.

The violence thing was actually what stuck out most for me too. Not the violence itself as such - most of it is borderline slapstick really - but the attitude towards it. Makes Rambo seem pussy on the "extreme, excessive, meaningless and and utterly mindless violence maketh the man and winneth the girl" stuff. And that end fight is a blatant rip-off of Karate Kid - right down to the dodgy leg "special move" bit. Only with Nessun Dorma playing in the background. Classy :|

Nasty little film. Sadly not in the good way :\

Also, I noticed it was based on a book?!? Presumably written by a very sexually frustrated teenage boy who got bullied at school and never got picked for the hockey team.

I had a strong suspicion that you might fall into the 20% camp of disliking it because of the violence. I quite like mutually agreed fighting where you really feel both the pain of being hurt and the satisfaction of inflicting it. I guess it's a very raw and animalistic sort of feeling that leaves me feeling pumped up. Thanks for giving it a chance though. I hope it doesn't put you off of watching Headhunters because I think that is a film we can all agree is great.

Re: sports movies, money ball was ok, and i'm not really into sports or films about sports either.

my copy said based on a true story ... also at the end of my copy there were a few 'real news' clips with I presume is the real guy?
anyone else see them @ the end bits half way through the credits?

also, re nonsense violence ... I fucking love Conair .. one dimensional as fuck characterwise, but Buscemi ... ahh and Cusack <3

I get the feeling that is part and parcel of hockey or something? It has been duly noted that violence is not appreciated on BL! This film isn't really anything like all the other films I have recommended and I did warn people of that lol. Seriously, if you doubt me after watching that just watch Headhunters or any other film i've recommended on here ever and faith will be restored!

the former, yes, seem to get the same impression .. or it's what hockey has become .. the Quebec que alluded to this .. again, that couldve been explored, but this was obviously more of a biopic ... just not very good at that either imo, since it didnt explore his character in any depth.

re the latter in bold ... this is honestly not the case at all. I went to see Man Bites Dog at the cinema and have a full repertoire of violent flicks I like ... it's just the type of violence that needs to be right. can't lump it all together.

see Alex Cox for good opinions about violence and horror

[edit] and of course I'll watch headhunters. that this movie was shite, doesn't matter really .. film discussion is grand regardless, and I haven't really done it for ages, so it's great to be doing it again. GoonGate™ has at least spawned a potential film club kinda thread ... so all is not lost

I fuckin' <3 violent films. It's all about the approach and attitude towards that violence though. In this case it just left a very bad taste. I just didn't get along with the whole tone of the film really. Wasn't ever quite sure if it was trying to be a "gross-out" teen comedy or a straight "loser makes good" sports flick.

The bloke is supposed to be a retard of some kind... or is he just a "lovable idiot" (complete with cheesy Forrest Gump-style "natural wisdom" dialogue? Either way, the only way to stop being a loser is to become a psychopath thus saving the day, winning the respect of his peers and - naturally - getting the girl who's way out of his league. And tick off every single cliche possible along the way. Ick. Not for me I'm afraid, Mr SB.

Violence aside, it's just a bad film. Acting is poor, characterisation is non-existant, plot phoned in to say it was taking the day off... I could go on ;)

Also, I found the soundtrack really annoying. Not just the horribly cheesy use of opera to try to inject style and emotion into scenes that had neither (although that was particularly irritating) but the volume levels. Why the fuck did the volume need to double every time there was a sporty/fighty bit? Did my fuckin' nut in. Had to keep diving for the volume control... and only narrowly missing the "off" button each time :D

Marmz: No "based on a true story" or news clips at the end of my copy. Screen was black for a fair while whilst music played before the end credits though - might've been a cinema cut instead of a video cut with an extra bit tacked on or summat?

Talking of movie violence, the baseball bat scene near the end of Casino is disturbingly brutal.

Skipped through Driller Killer the other week on u tube, for old times sake.Cracking storyline. Bloke goes nuts, buys cordless drill, kills people with drill, mainly vagrants.

I've got two cordless drills and one chainsaw.* However I like vagrants. If I was going to go berserk I'd do it in the square mile or something.

* I also have an electric strimmer but I can't see how this would come in useful.

Yes, the flaws are not lost on me. I liked how gratuitous the violence was for the most part though. They seemed to put a lot of effort into making it actually painful to watch which I liked - and they also did it in an over the top way that was slap stick and very piss takey to my mind. I also liked the simplification of the simple character, and I took the whole "natural wisdom" thing as a bit of a piss take out of the audience and the film itself more than the film taking itself seriously in any capacity. Simple people are by their very nature simple. I really appreciated that they didn't go into some sort of character flaw or problem with the characters, and it was just about some good old fashioned violence and some laughs that took me by surprise (mostly because I was expecting it to be totally shit).

It didn't come across to me that the girl was out of his league, more of just that for some reason he felt she was out of his league, despite being a relatively kind and handsome chap - even if he kicked the shit out of people for a living. Of the whole thing that was the part that I didn't like, and it seemed like they put it in just because as a somewhat 'true' story that was thin on the ground they had to pack it out a bit. The operatic music was also, to me, quite obviously a piss take from a film that wasn't meant to take itself seriously from the start. The fact they were treading over a lot of old ground meant they had to mock themselves or be written off as totally corny. And the high volume/low volume thing pissed me off now end, but I suspect that the highs and the lows aren't meant to be that pronounced? If they were that's just bloody stupid.

I stick by my original view; Some good fighting, some enjoyable ridiculous style off beat comedy, and a dash of emotion, made for an easy viewing experience. It's not like i'd watch it again but it did entertain me for a couple of hours, and it broke up the seemingly endless amount of awesome films that require way too much thinking and concentration that I seem to have found myself caught up in recently. I don't think they, or I, were under any illusions that it was oscar material. Just a good film to watch whilst high. And it seems to have got a lot of love from hockey fans and Canadians so it must have done something at least slightly right. I think the film was supposed to be much more subtly satirical in everything that it did than it was serious, or maybe that's just the feeling that I got from it cus I was stoned.

All in all 3/5 seems fair. But I will definitely definitely make sure only the creme de la creme get's recommended.

Knockiller, you should stick to what you're good at killing ... trees spring to mind

TREE KILLER! ;P

Meh, and fuck this thinking before bed malarky, I'm not even on stims. have been trying to get out of the habit of late night thinking .. fairly successfully until tonight. need to be fully on a daywalking schedule atm.

here goes attempt number 3

I <3 Driller Killer. Was somewhat disappointed at the distinct lack of onscreen violence when I first saw it. That early 80s VHS cover is a stonecold classic <3

As were most "video nasty" sleeves actually. Usually markedly better than the forbidden fruits within too :D

Mr SB: Without wishing to belabour the point, I think it's suffice to say I disagree with you on every word of that there review. And almost feel a bit guilty in doing so. Am aware it's probably coming over as being overly-critical of the film for effect but it really isn't - managed to cover every single one of my "things that make a film truly terrible" bases and managed a surprise bonus box for violence that manages to be genuinely unpleasant which was a genuine surprise. Trying to combine comedy cartoon slapstick violence (like all that Warner Bros-stylee repeated punching whilst mugging silly faces at the camera shite) with pretty fuckin' rough "realistic" (without showing any realistic consequences) violence just made it seem weirdly fetishistic and depressing. But can see why it'd appeal to hockey fanboys, I spose. It's that or The Mighty Ducks really :D

Heyho. We can agree to differ and move onto proper films instead, I'm sure. Will maybe try to rustle up some recommendations on how to do cinematic violence properly ;)

Tree murder and Goon aside, I saw The Angel's Share tonight at the local Odeon. It's a Ken Loach film set in Scotland. It was worth a watch for sweary laughs and the scenes of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Nothing special though I'm afraid, in fact for a while I was preparing to come on here and rant about it being disgusting propaganda but that feeling wore off after a while, still quite establishment-friendly though, don't expect anything challenging or controversial from it. But fun all the same.

Gotta admire ,em for their abysmal acting and sleaze
the "nasties". Video hire shop had no qualms renting, even though we were adolescent young teens at the time. A great era.

There were definitely some properly good films on the official "nasties" list... and some properly shite ones too... and some I didn't manage to stay awake through :D

But stonking sleeve art all-round. Mad to think that films I used to buy grainy nth generation copies of from shady personal ads in the back of shady film magazines for risking prosecution for obscenity in the process for are now up on PooToob and shown as classics on C4 these days. I know people who got massive fines - even jailtime (briefly) - just for possession of imported videos - wasn't even all that long ago really. My how things can change when the government realises its policies are ridiculous and criminalise people for personal preferences... One can but hope they spot a few similar shonky policy decisions...

Just finished watching Howl's Moving Castle.

Was a bit longer than expected, but seemed to get better as it went on.

7.5/10
<3'ed the characters and the bonkers locations, storyline, etc.

Always feels like I've been dreaming after watching a ghibli film.
