The "American" parts of BL

Is Spaced monged out silly humour?

Clue's in the title really, dude. You know, Spaced? As in spaced out.

It's definitely a slacker/stoner comedy. Both have no jobs. Tim spends most of his time stoned out of his face or whizzing his fucking tits off whilst playing Resident Evil. Daisy is forever trying to arrange parties or fun days out as a way to avoid looking for a new job which usually ends in them all being completely spannered. Plus all the pop references are aimed at your typical geeky stoner that likes to play a lot of video games and watch a lot of films.

You should watch it...

Yes 33Hz I had noticed the drug references! But thanks for reminding me ;) I just think the humour in spaced is a bit more sophisticated than cheech and chong!

I find everything Simon Pegg does unfunny, and I see his jokes coming from a mile away. Then again, I tried to watch Spaced after watching his films so I gave up half way through the first episode because Pegg just made me want to punch the screen. The guy is just a boring ginger twat masquerading as a nerd to try and seem vaguely interesting.

I do agree with you on the Cheech and Chong thing MM though. Crow baring weed references in every 2 seconds is no replacement for genuine humour. O wow, you hotboxed a car and you're really baked? That must have taken you the best part of a second to think up. I didn't quite get the genius of the first time you did it, so you'd better make at least half a dozen sequels and spin offs ASAP.

cheech and chong are fucking shit films, a child could have written them.

Spaced is ace.

Aye, I'm in no way saying Cheech and Chong was better than Spaced. Spaced Is one of my fave comedy shows ever. Just felt like it deserved a mention as it was one of the first films to define that kind of style. Before then it was mostly psychedelic hippy stuff.

you put Spaced in the same category as Cheech and Chong. Douche move!

They are both stoner/slacker themed though so I see no reason why this would be a problem? Just because one is much shitter than the other makes no difference.

I don't think Spaced is "stoner/slacker". I think it's just of its era, i.e. 90s. 90s UK twenty-something if you want to be super specific!

We dont' really have slackers in the UK as such do we? Or there are just too many of them to be considered niche... In America it seems like not taking part in their giant rat race garners looks of suspicion and surprise in equal measure.

Average American: What's that? You don't want a bigger car and house than me? What the fuck is wrong with you?
'Slacker': Sorry, i'm content!
Average American: What is this 'content' you speak of? :sus:

That pretty much fits the description of a slacker in movie culture though, dude.

The movie also popularized the use of "slacker" to describe "a person regarded as one of a large group or generation of young people (especially in the early to mid 1990s) characterized by apathy, aimlessness, and lack of ambition".

Dunno. I was a 90s UK twenty-something. I did take drugs but I wasn't a slacker or a stoner; I relate to Spaced despite this, dude ;)

The greatness of multidimensional storytelling, eh?
