Stage 4 Cancer Patient Inquiring About Cost Effective Pain Management (NO INSURANCE)

My father was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in Oct 2010. At the time he qualified for Medicaid and we were able to closely monitor his progress through weekly visits to his oncologist. He refused chemo knowing that it would likely kill him before the cancer and instead focused on diet and lifestyle changes- to our pleasant surprise his oncologist was onboard. The oncologist gladly provided monthly scans, prescribed the least harmful sleep-aid's, antiemetic's, and other drugs that would improve his quality of life. My father's emotional state was forward and optimistic when he was symptom free thanks to Marinol and Roxicodone(A narcotic WITHOUT the hepatotoxic APAP). Sadly he is no longer eligible for Health Care and has been without it for three months. I've been doing my best to get him the medicine he needs, but there have been weeks where he's had to endure without any relief due to the unreliable nature of the situation - And that has upset me more then anything

We've made an appointment with his oncologist for this coming up Wednesday and are paying out of pocket for everything. I've tried as many search combinations as I can think of and have yet to find the most "Cost-Effective" narcotic. He was previously prescribed 180 10mg Roxicodone each month, but I have no idea what that will cost without inssurance (Marinol is close to <no price discussion> a bottle; thankfully we've found a natural substitute). The oncologist is willing to prescrive whatever we decide on; currently the possible options are Methadone 10mg 180ct, Roxicodone 10mg 180ct, or Hydromorphone 4-8mg 180ct. I would appreciate any suggestions as to any cheaper options, along with the relative out-of-pocket cost of each(if known): the only criteria is that it not contain Acetaminophen(Tylenol).

I have stage 4 breast cancer and hydromorphone has been a life saver. If you send me your paypal address I will pay for the prescription monthly until he is covered. I feel I came across this listing for a reason and I know how he feels. No one should ever have to go without the pain meds they need. Thank you for being such a wonderful daughter to him. I had to pay for 6 months until I was covered so, like I said, I feel I can now pay it forward as someone helped me when I was in that situation.

I suggest you watch "run from the cure" documentary... I mean it can't guarantee success but, if I had a terminal illness like cancer I would give anything a try... you can find the full documentary on youtube

we don't allow discussion of exact prices anywhere on BL. but maybe the folks in other drugs can help point you in the correct direction.

Checkout the chronic pain thread in my signature. Without getting into price discussion (sorry it's against the guidelines, check 'em out in my signature also)...

I've found the most cost effective pain management medication is morphine or methadone, both are available as generics offered from many different pharmaceutical companies.

methadone will be cheapest stricktly to kill the pain... but morphine, hydromorphone, or oxy are painkillers that come with euphoria/mood lift, something that i woud definately need if i had a life threaghtning cancer, morpine being the cheapest...

also i believe the guy who mentioned "run from the cure" is refering to cannabis wich has proved to be a far moe effeciant painkiller than the strongest opiates in SOME cancer cases... since you said your father has lung cancer, smking it would obviously be stupid, but there are other ways of ingesting cannabis...

Such a generous and kind offer.

Hope you're doing okay health-wise and otherwise <3

as a couple people said methadone would probably be best...I hear people say it doesn't get you high or kill pain, but It's a full opioid agonist (and a damn good one too) like morphine, heroin, oxycodone etc..

My Father is on kidney dialysis and is not suppose to take pain killers, though once in a blue moon he will take 50 mg's of morphine or 25-30 mg's of methadone when the pain ios to intense, ands he says the methadone works great.(These doses may be a little high,my dad seems to have a little bit of a natural tolerance,so adjust the doeses according to your tolerance)

I get all of my meds covered through Non insured health benefits (Indian Affairs Canada),but I once did the math....It cost the government like 7-10 times as much or more per year to keep me on Oxycontin or Hydromoph Contin as it does to keep me on methadone.

Plus it lasts a long time, and it sounds like round the clock pain managment is need in this case.

w/o going into prices, I can tell you that 4mg hydromorphone is a hell of a lot cheaper than 8mg (way less than half) from the pharmacies, dunno about the 2s. dunno how morphine or anything else compares. I do know that patches and exalgo (time release hydromorphone) are EXTREMELY expensive w/o insurance. sorry to hear about your dad, my mom was just diagnosed with breast and lung cancer. she's not stage 4 but its still scary as shit. call around and ask the pharmacies prices - they will give you prices here, tho half wont tell you if they can fill a 'scrip over the phone - I cant figure that one out. Maybe they , think if they dont say they wont get robbed if you ask 'can you fill a prescription for a shitload of whatever c2 narcotic' and they answer yes. but fk that, im not driving to your pharmacy if you cant fill my prescriptions.

jmho, but I think methadone, while very cheap, is an awful painkiller. good for staying a H habit, but that's about it.

as a couple people said methadone would probably be best...I hear people say it doesn't get you high or kill pain, but It's a full opioid agonist (and a damn good one too)
That is coming from people who are on methadone maintenance therapy for opiate addiction, they take a low stable dose of methadone once every 24 hrs, so it is not alleviating their pain or making them "high" (you get a tolerance to these effects pretty rapidly). When used for pain management it is dosed much more frequently and the dose can be gradually raised if more analgesia is needed.

^^ indeed as entioned above, methadone is a good painkiler but its analgesic effects only last 4-6 hours when the "overall effects" last 24-48 hours, so you have to dose min 4 times per day... that said i stick by my opinion that someone with stage 4 cancer might want something that comes with a bit of a mood-lift, hence not methadone, methadone will get you a slight "high" allthough far less euphoric than other opiates the first week or so (maybe 2) of daily dosing, then any mood lift will start to fade away

if you're looking for cheapest meds i completely agree with the guy who said poppy pod tea, it contains codeine which is a good pain killer, also if you wanna go even further you can do an extraction of codeine and then synthesize morphine from it but I wouldn't suggest that... you can also grow cannabis and extract the oils from it, but first try it coz cannabis oil is effective in some people, but not all... good luck anyway hope this is helpful

I think the marinol would take the place of medical marijuana so that solves te smoking issue someone said...

Not at all, Marinol is NOTHING like the blend of cannabinoids found in high potency cannabis extracts.

I would recommend cannabis extracts like hash, keif, wax, etc. over Marinol, as Marinol only contains a negligible amount of THC, and there is SO MUCH MORE to the cannabinoids action than THC.

I still highly recommend morphine or methadone, preferably morphine as it tends to stay working longer, and the redosing isn't as bad as with methadone, but in terms of $$, we can't get into it but I'd be willing to bet they are both dirt cheap

sorry i thought that naming a pharmacy price would be alright i thought it was street prices we were supposed to avoid because it's so much like sourcing
