My father was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer in Oct 2010. At the time he qualified for Medicaid and we were able to closely monitor his progress through weekly visits to his oncologist. He refused chemo knowing that it would likely kill him before the cancer and instead focused on diet and lifestyle changes- to our pleasant surprise his oncologist was onboard. The oncologist gladly provided monthly scans, prescribed the least harmful sleep-aid's, antiemetic's, and other drugs that would improve his quality of life. My father's emotional state was forward and optimistic when he was symptom free thanks to Marinol and Roxicodone(A narcotic WITHOUT the hepatotoxic APAP). Sadly he is no longer eligible for Health Care and has been without it for three months. I've been doing my best to get him the medicine he needs, but there have been weeks where he's had to endure without any relief due to the unreliable nature of the situation - And that has upset me more then anything
We've made an appointment with his oncologist for this coming up Wednesday and are paying out of pocket for everything. I've tried as many search combinations as I can think of and have yet to find the most "Cost-Effective" narcotic. He was previously prescribed 180 10mg Roxicodone each month, but I have no idea what that will cost without inssurance (Marinol is close to <no price discussion> a bottle; thankfully we've found a natural substitute). The oncologist is willing to prescrive whatever we decide on; currently the possible options are Methadone 10mg 180ct, Roxicodone 10mg 180ct, or Hydromorphone 4-8mg 180ct. I would appreciate any suggestions as to any cheaper options, along with the relative out-of-pocket cost of each(if known): the only criteria is that it not contain Acetaminophen(Tylenol).
