I accidently got a small amount of Choline Bitartrate in my eye while I was pulling part a capsule that suddenly broke when it opened. I removed my contact lenses after about 15 minutes after searching online, and used a eyeball washing "cup" with deionized water for about 3-4 minutes since I don't have an eye washing station at home, lol.

My vision in my right eye was slightly blurry before removing my contacts, now it seems fine, but the eye is irritated. There is very mild stinging, and feels like something is in my eye. Choline is highly water soluble, and the eyeball is like a sponge. I'm kind of worried, but I'm not about to go to the hospital on a Saturday over this...

Reading online shows that Choline Bitartrate, aka 2-(Hydroxyethyl)trimethylammonium bitartrate, is a serious eye irritant, and it is recommended to"Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.... In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

Thanks for the help!

How much is 'a small amount'?

Rinse your eye thouroughly with saline water and if the burning/blurring/discomfort continues, seek the advice of an optometrist, as you may have caused corneal damage. Probably not worth going to ER.

The contact lens may have shielded your eye surface from most of the damage, actually. I would give it a 90% chance that tears and saline will make your eye feel better. At best an optometrist will rx steroid anti-inflammatory drops.

Call poison control, BL is not an emergency service. If it says it's a serious eye irritant I would take their word for it. Your vision is important, no?

Rinse immediately for 15 minutes, continuously...with eyelids open..I'd recommend shower..but that's individual taste...
you only need to seek medical attention if this isn't enough, and you notice irritation becomes worse or no better....

good luck. keep the contacts out for awhile ;)

Thanks, you guys :)

Sekio, I have absolutely no way of estimating the mg. It is a 310mg capsule of Choline base from 600mg of Choline Bitartrate. I would say a bit of "dust" went in? Maybe... 5-10mg of Choline Bitartrate? Speculating this is useless, though. It was below eye level, about a foot away and 4 inches down, so most of it went on the table. With the help of my family, we poured a small bottle of Baucsh & Lomb saline solution, about 4oz, in intermittent bursts. The vision is totally crisp, it feels less irritated but not perfect, obviously. The old customer at the Walgreens counter was asking the most stupid questions and wasting valuable time, I was almost about to confront him. :p

Token, thank you, I did that exactly, but no shower yet. Those contacts are in the trash. ;) This was completed about an hour and fifteen minutes after exposure. It still stings a bit, but vision is completely back to normal and the eye is not red anymore. This kind of shit would happen to me, I'm so damn unlucky. I should wear some chemistry eye goggles when playing nutritionist in my bedroom, hahah :D

Wiggi, thanks for the input, I did it for 15 minutes.

Sekio, are GenTeal tears absolutely necessary? I think I have some left over from years ago, I'll go look for them while I call poison control.

Goddamn I love Bluelight, you guys are always there for me :)

as someone who recently got quite a bit of tabasco sauce into his eye (don't ask, i was very drunk), lots and lots of saline and some eye drops (can't remember what was in them) at least brought the pain down to a bearable level after a while. i must have poured at least 3/4 of a liter into my eye though before i wasn't shaking with pain anymore.

Yeah Token, I supply the nutrition ;)

I know what's good for you, I'm kinda good at what I do when I don't get it in my eye :(

Ergic, continue with a heavy eyewash, but I'd strongly recommend going to the ER for a more thorough examination and treatment. Eye irritants can do a whole lot more than just irritate the eye, they can cause damage, in some cases, major ocular problems. I always err on the side of caution in situations like this and go to an ER or at very least see a doc at an after-hours clinic (whichever is less busy). Hope that everything turns out well!

Make an appointment with Urgent Care at the very least, do not take your vision for granted. I'm not saying that specifically for Choline either.

What did poison control have to say EM?

I know what's good for me, also..but apparently my aim is off once in awhile, too.

It's always a plus to be good @ what it is you do

The goggles shouldn't hurt the nutrition in anyway I can think of. ;)

I guess I should be telling you to go to an urgent care office, also??
Are you able to read this?
How many fingers am I holding up?

LOL oh Token...

Shit... in that case I'm definitely wearing the goggles! ;)

To be honest, I never called poison control or made an optometrist appointment. I'm dealing with some other stressful shit right now, and I really DGAF about a slim chance of eye damage at the moment, as bad as it sounds.

In fact Mr. Mergic, an idea just popped into my head! Not only could you/should you wear the goggles..but I was thinking a super crisp full length white doctor's/nutritionist's;) coat would be ideal..
just to be extra-protected. =D

You know what's neat?
When people are honest.

There was this one time where I found myself in a stressful situation...
and I believe I would've handled and also not handled a similar occurance in exactly the same way.
As bad as that may sound...shrugs shoulders

<3 Sorry to hear of stressful times. From what I can tell they're even more irritating than eye irritants.

Hey! Do you mind?
I've been trying to take over EM's thread for days now....
Now it's covered in a bunch of green stuff...

geeez.
eh...Canadians...

lol....j/k...
kind of...;)

In all seriousness, I hope that everything is turning out OK, Ergic.
+1
