Benzos Xanax Withdrawal

My boyfriend had a withdrawal seizure one morning, a day and a half after coming off of alprozolam/xanax. It can be very dangerous and deadly. When he was done seizing and stable, I took him to the hospital for a post-seizure evaluation, (I have experience with an epileptic family member, so I knew how to handle the situation when it occurred), and he had to take ativan and wean down from that, safely.

While it was partially his fault, (because he should have known better), I blame the doctor that prescribed it to him more, because the doctor did not tell him to wean off of it in order to stop taking it... the doctor just simply implied that he could stop taking it when the script was out.

You'll be straight. At 2mgs a day, the withdrawals will be mostly mental. I was prescribed 3 1mg footballs a day for about a year, I quit my script and didn't have any withdrawals.

would an even longer acting benzo than valium, such as flurazepam be more helpful for withdrawls, or would it be useless because it is used more as a hypnotic than an anxiolytic, such as lower doses of clonazepam, diazepam, or ativan? SWIM was wondering because they have access to all of the above and would also like to get off alprazolam as well.

Yes I think you should def see your G.P. 2 days it's going to get worse 2-3 days is when I have had grand mal seizures had them about 4 diferent occasions coming off Xanax only had the siezures though when coming off high doses of Alprazolam 2-3 bars per day. Your G.P. should give you at least a half script of valium 25 5mg pills instead of 50 & that would be plenty to do a taper. Good luck

Dont use SWIM as it's very dangerous to go SWIMING on xanax

When you guys are talking about going into seizures and having bad WDs, what dose is involved? I take .5-2mg/day of xanax. And when I get low, from over using, I taper down to .25 or so and then can go up to a week without xanax, until my script gets refilled.

I've never gone through WDs from benzos, opiates many times, but it seems like at low doses, benzo WD can be avoided. Anyone have any commentary on that?

Benzo WD cannot be avoided, it's not so much about how much you dose, it's how often you dose. Even if you've been on a low dose of alprazolam if you've been taking it for an extended amount of time, then withdrawals are imminent danger and should be treated with the respect of the severity of the symptoms... it can be lethal.

it's the same with opiates really. even low, non-recreational doses of weak(er) opiates over a prolonged period can produce withdrawal symptoms that are on par with someone using something much more potent in higher dosages. it's more about the frequency and length of consumption than it is about the dosages.
same thing applies 100% to benzos - probably even moreso.

Hey everyone, its been about a week since my last xanax and let me tell you the withdrawals were hell. I am mostly past it (except for desperately craving a bar) and I wanted to thank everyone for the support and advice. I made the (dangerous) choice to not inform anyone about it and luckily I got through it without anything fatal happening. What seemed to help the withdrawal was clonidine, opiates 8), and a lot of pot. I hope I never go through this again, but sadly I can see myself taking benzos again in the future. I would recommend no one start taking xanax or any benzo for recreational purposes, it is not worth it!

you should go to a doctor cause benzo WD can make you have a seizure so the doctor will most likely give you libruim or valium to taper off with

Does anyone follow harm reduction advice these days?

Thread Closed, to the 307 people reading OD right now, I hope none of you don't get some false sense of security by reading this and thinking you can detox cold turkey without dying as well. This was extremely reckless behavior, in the event of discontinuation of benzodiazepines, it is never done cold turkey. As it's been mentioned, a proper switch to Diazepam is required and then a proper taper depending on the dose, frequency of dosing, and length of dependency.

DO NOT ABRUPTLY DISCONTINUE BENZODIAZEPINES, CONSULT YOUR PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON A PROPER TAPER WITH DIAZEPAM THAT THEY PRESCRIBE YOU
