Hello all! Swim came up with a wonderfully effective method for making swiy's own homemade "oral" syringe!
Here's how it's done
Materials:
1 straw (big red ones work really well
1-4 cigarette filters, with paper removed
a cup of water
guitar string and or another firm but flexible ram rod type piece of equipment
lighter
Build Pt. 1:
1. Take the required number of cigarette filters and slide them onto the guitar string (this may take some trial and error to find the right number of filters, for swim with the red straw swim has, it took four, to be perfectly sealed. In order to make this fit, swim had to cut off the end of the four filters when they were fully assembled) This forms the stopper, used to create a vacuum.
2. Make a bend in the guitar string that is 1.5-2 times the length of one cigarette filter.
push one, or two of the filters depending on straw, past the bend, then keep none, one, or two (depending on the gauge of the straw and filters) on the other side, closer to the end than the bend.
3. Completely fold over the bend and push the filters towards the resultant crease.
4. Rub the cigarette filters against each other until they are at least a very very slight amount entwined, or enough fuzz that when wetted, this fuzz can be wrapped around the whole thing.
5. Wet the filters, and try to make them as compact, and unified as possible, forming your stopper.
6. insert beginning of filter into straw and test if it fits. If not, readjust, re-roll/rub, and/or cut the filter (now a stopper) so that it fits all the way in and can move up and down the straw VERY snuggly. Swim emphasizes this point: VERY SNUGGLY. The only point of snugness that is too far, is when it is way too hard to push the stopped to the end. Swim likes to do this before swim uses the lighter to make the tip at the end of the syringe, for a few reasons.
Testing:
1. push the filter(s) down the length of the straw until swiy come to the end, then place the end into the water, and pull up on the guitar string, relatively slowly, swiy should see water being pulled up the straw, if not, check for holes, or cracks in straw, and/or readjust filter/stopper.
2. Take the straw out of the water, and make sure that it does not drip out of the end. If a few drops fall, this is no big deal, and almost certainly will not be an issue by the end of the build. If more than that comes out, and/ or it slowly drips out without eventually stopping before being empty, check for flaws/faults and/or remake/fix stopper.
Build Pt. 2
3. Drain the straw completely., make sure it's dry
4. Use a lighter to lightly melt the plastic of the straw on the end that will be *inserted* , and use fingers (or a table or something if swiy is a pussy) to push the melted plastic into a funnel shape at the end. This also may take some trial and error.
When end is finished, try using straw again, by putting in water and drawing up, see if it works, make sure it doesn't leak, at this point it really shouldn't at all, especially if the tip is made right, and is reasonably narrow at the mouth.
It should!
