I THINK people spend a lot of energy and money on fighting the "war on drugs". And from the scale of drug use in the UK we'd have to agree that it's not really paid any dividends. What we need to address is the fact that the drugs market is dictated by the appetite of people and not the other way around. I'm all in favour of keeping mind-altering substances such as "Mexxy" away from young minds. But I do not think that we should think that will be enough. We need to pay much more heed to the reasons why young people are motivated to taking mind-altering substances. And we should be especially concerned about those young people who are vulnerable to drug taking becoming habitual.

Freud said: "Imagine what would happen if people who took drugs could desist, and instead invest their energies in making the world a better place." It would indeed be truly revolutionary. I reckon we'd break the back of the recession in no time and probably win the World Cup if we had more teams like Real United.

Cause every drug user is really a top banker / footballer / doctor thats just being held back by the evil drugs!

imagine if all drugs were taxed and legal, probably dent the economic situation somewhat, at the very least it wouldn't feel so bad!

read before you comment

"Alcoholics and Narcotics anonymous are good examples of the way peer relations are effective."

lol, so that's why there success rates are just the same as those who quit by themselves?

Is this the same Freud who was hooked on coke?

Man has sought to alter his consciousness since the beginning of man. No amount or lack of legislation, politics, religion, rhetoric, or internet forum pontificating will change this. It is in the very fabric of our beings.

What a ridiculous article.
People have used drugs in every epoch of history, in every human culture.
People will continue to use drugs for as long as there are people.
You cannot draw a clear line between drugs and food or drink, and things like exercise and sex might just qualify as well.
The ignorance of saying that the world may be free of drugs is stupendous.

from what I remember of Cuba, drug use was pretty nonexistent except for alcohol, tobacco and caffeine. Then again, how is anyone supposed to buy or sell drugs when every last person is a government snitch?

edit: oh and benzos. I remember benzos.

''Why?

The bourgeoisie and proletariat alike use a plethora of drugs.''

well, there would be a classless society, so no bourgeoisie or proletariat. Both are alienated.

I am not saying that drug use would stop, I think it would be different. I tend to think that people would not need drug escapism in a society not basded on profit but on satisfying human need, but drugs we are not even aware of yet, both safe and enjoyable could emerge which may be widely consumed, I am only speculating and do not know.

As for the argument that people have always taken drugs, well, we have never lived in a post capitalist society so I wouldn't absolutely rule out a drug free society in the sense of recreational activity.

You have never lived in such a society because such a society has never existed.
It is hard to rule out anything in this type of situation - one that may never exist.
However, based on all available evidence - all histories of all societies on the earth - people are not going to stop using drugs recreationally.

Many of such societies have existed and still exist right now, though they are quite different from the societies we live in today, I'm talking about most native people such as the those in the Amazon, the native Americans and many African tribes that are still fairly isolated. For them, drugs are a sacrament which is to be treated with the utmost respect and consequently is only used occasionally and for higher purposes, not get fucked up on.

Damn right, well put.

What is meant by a "drug free world" anyway? A world in which everyone only drinks alcohol and smokes tobacco?

"Drug free" has to mean all drugs, not just the ones the author of the article doesn't happen to approve of. And how much chance is there of that happening?

It is literally impossible, since that would rule out the lehal medical use of drugs with a long lasting and solid reputation but who are also well known euphoriants or at the least mind altering (Morphine, Ketamine, Amphetamine, etc). Even if you'd forget about the pharmaceutical drugs which have a high potential for abuse for are still legitimaly prescribed, there are dozens of psychoactive herbs, plants and trees that grow in abundance right in our own gardens. If society would just accept this fact and instead focus on how to use them with as little risk or bias as possible ...

You have to respect that the article approaches the topic with a fairly narrow viewpoint. What the author is basically saying is that society should promote the promulgation and proliferation of social groups to help young kids in bad situations get away from them without having to resort to drug use and therefore redirecting potential malevolent behaviour into behaviour that grows and promotes future social wealth.

I imagine the article would be a fair bit longer if it got into the nature of pain and misery as part of the human experience and how our unquenchable desires for happiness and drug-induced revelations that may lead there are what make or break men.
